A woman in Illinois who tried to spike a toddler's sippy cup of milk with nail polish remover has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.Andrea Vazquez-Hernandez, 37, of Carol Stream, Illinois was sentenced Friday after being found guilty of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a child under 13 earlier this year.In May 2016, Vazquez-Hernandez mixed "one inch" of nail polish remover with milk and gave it to her husband's daughter. The girl immediately spit out the milk when she tasted the nail polish remover and was taken to the hospital. She was later released, and tests later revealed that her milk had been spiked. The girl had been fathered by Vazquez-Hernandez's husband with another woman, and Vazquez-Hernandez reportedly tried to poison the girl in order to punish her father.During her sentencing, the Chicago Tribune reports that Vazquez-Hernandez told the judge that she thanked God that the child was OK, but the judge was reportedly concerned about Vazquez-Hernandez's "lack of remorse."Vazquez-Hernandez will be required to serve at least five years of her 10-year sentence before being released.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is opening a tuition-free preschool in Washington state.According to Bezos' philanthropic organization Day One Fund's website, the Bezos Academy will open on Oct. 19 in Des Moines, Washington. The Montessori-inspired preschool will serve children between the ages of three and five and will prioritize low-income families."In selecting communities for our preschools, we consider a wide range of data, including income levels, participation in free and reduced-cost meal programs, and gaps in access to licensed childcare providers," the organization stated. "We also look for local organizations and businesses that understand the needs of their community members and are excited about the prospect of hosting a tuition-free, high-quality preschool in their neighborhood."The Bezos Academy will be five days a week and run year-round. 868

Almost 30 million Facebook users' phone numbers and email addresses were accessed by hackers in the biggest security breach in the company's history, Facebook said on Friday. The attackers accessed even more details on 14 million of those users, including the area where they live, their relationship status and their religion. The new details come two weeks after Facebook first announced that attackers had access to 50 million users' accounts -- meaning they could have logged in as those users. Facebook said on Friday that, "We now know that fewer people were impacted than we originally thought," and said that 30 million people had been impacted. For the 14 million worst hit by the breach, the attackers were able to access the following information, Facebook said: "username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, device types used to access Facebook, education, work, the last 10 places they checked into or were tagged in, website, people or Pages they follow, and the 15 most recent searches."Facebook said it will send a message to the 30 million users affected in the coming days. If you would like to check and see for yourself if your account was affected, click here. The company also said it is cooperating with the FBI, the Federal Trade Commission and the Irish Data Protection Commission.Facebook is regulated by Irish authorities in Europe as its European headquarters is located there. A spokesperson for the Irish data regulator said of Friday's announcement, "The update from Facebook today is significant now that Facebook has confirmed that the personal data of millions of users was taken by the perpetrators of the attack."Despite Friday's announcement, there are still many details about the hack that have not been made public, including who was behind it.The attack prompted Facebook to take the unprecedented step of logging out the 50 million users whose accounts were exposed and logged out another 40 million users as a precautionary measure. 2056

After America reached the grim milestone of more than 10 million positive coronavirus cases in just 10 months, healthcare systems in multiple areas around the country are warning their hospital bed capacity is nearing or at 100 percent full.In North Dakota, the governor said this week their hospitals have reached their limit, and depending how the next few weeks go, facilities could be pushed past their capabilities. He issued an urgent plea asking residents to take steps to slow the spread of the coronavirus. He also amended a state order to allow asymptomatic health care workers who test positive for COVID-19 to continue working in COVID-19 units of a healthcare facility.“Our hospitals are under enormous pressure now,” Governor Doug Burgum said. “We can see the future two, three weeks out, and we know that we have severe constraints.”Bergum is asking that businesses and events or gatherings be reduced to 25 percent or a max of 50 people, and said face coverings should be required. However, he did not issue a statewide mask mandate. In Iowa, UnityPoint Health Des Moines, which runs four hospitals in the capital city, says they are at capacity and all their beds are full.Polk County, where Des Moines is located, saw the most new hospitalizations on one day Monday, with 191 new coronavirus patients. The county has issued a “plea to our community to please help in our fight against COVID-19.” They say they are “facing bed shortages and staffing shortages,” and ask people to wear a mask, wash hands, and practice social distancing so the healthcare system does not become overwhelmed. On Monday, the Iowa Health Department said there were more than 1,100 people hospitalized in the state with coronavirus. Iowa has a total of about 2,800 inpatient hospital beds available, with 382 of them in intensive care units spread around the state.Hospitalizations around the country have nearly doubled since late September. Tuesday morning, roughly 59,000 Americans were in the hospital because of the coronavirus.Health experts are worried about the recent spike in coronavirus cases. They are widespread across the country, and not focused on a handful of “epicenters” like there were earlier this spring and summer. This means resources like staff and equipment cannot be shuffled around to the places that need it, because everywhere is overwhelmed. 2370
