SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six new flu deaths have been reported this week in San Diego County as the number of emergency room visits due to the flu remain the same, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.So far this flu season, 308 people have died from the flu throughout the county. Those who have died range in age from one to 101 years old and almost all had underlying medical conditions.Also last week, 682 lab-confirmed cases of the flu were reported compared to 620 the week before.“The number of influenza cases being reported is still elevated, a sign that the flu is still here and making people sick,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “People should continue getting vaccinated.”So far this flu season, more than 19,000 lab-confirmed cases of the flu have been reported, compared to nearly 5,000 last season. 874

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — University of San Diego is sidelining its plans to return to some form of on-campus classes this fall unless given approval by state and local officials.A statement from USD President James Harris read that due to the rising number of cases locally and in California, as well as the lack of reopening guidance for colleges, they will offer remote learning for all fall undergraduate and graduate courses.The undergraduate semester is still set to begin on Aug. 17, according to the school."At the time of my original announcement, the number of daily cases of COVID-19 in San Diego County was approximately 100, and given the shut-down order then in place, we were optimistic the situation would be much improved by the Fall," Harris' statement read. "Instead, the number of daily cases skyrocketed, and San Diego is now averaging more than 400 cases per day."With less than a month to go before we begin Fall classes for undergraduates, we have reached the point where a final decision has to be made."Originally, the campus planned to offer in-person courses as part of a hybrid approach to the academic year. USD says it can still pivot to the planned hybrid model if conditions improve. The school added that the campus will also continue to offer students options for remote or in-person classes when they receive permission to move forward with the plan."The good news is that all of the great work of the task forces preparing for the Fall will benefit us as we move forward. Due to their continuing efforts, we are prepared to pivot to our planned hybrid approach of both in-person and remote instruction when conditions improve and allow us to do so," according to USD. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Whether you're posting using the hashtag #GreatAmericanTakeout, #TakeOutTuesday, or #TakeOutChallenge, the purpose is all the same--to help local business. Arian Tabatabaei's family runs Huapangos in Hillcrest. His parents, Viri and JT, have owned it for more than a decade. Arian and his twin work there to help their parents. "It's been good until now," he said. Like many, their future is up in the air. "It's completely dead in Hillcrest right now," he said. "We're not making any profit to help anybody... all these bills that are coming in, they're just piling right now." They've had to lay off most of their employees. Tabatabaei said they dropped their prices, simplified their menu, and are offering take out or delivery. There's been an ongoing effort on social media to promote businesses that are still open.Laura posted on Twitter that she got pizza for her birthday from Tribute Pizza in North Park. She wrote that "they put your food on your car hood to be totally contact-free." The San Diego Emerald Society posted that they pick up wings from Dirty Birds in Pacific Beach. "They are donating food to healthcare workers and other first responders," the post said. Tabatabaei has a message for San Diegans. "Just stay strong throughout this. Stay home, but just come out and get your food." 1336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Years of emails and persistence finally paid off for a Del Cerro man whose sister died while crossing the street five years ago. Vahid Hamzavi's sister, Mina, was killed while crossing the street at the intersection of Navajo Road and Margerum Avenue. There are crossing signs and buttons, but no designated, marked crosswalk. Hamzavi started asking for a crosswalk at the deadly intersection in 2016. In February, he reached out to 10News because nothing had been done. City Councilmember Scott Sherman's office told us there would be a crosswalk installed by March or April, but still nothing. Last week, Hamzavi called the councilmember's office again. Sherman's office told him they expedited the work order with the Department of Transportation and Storm Water and that the crosswalk would be in place by Friday. On Monday, crews were already out measuring and outlining the design for the crosswalk. The work is expected to be complete on Tuesday.Hamzavi says the wait was worth it and he hopes the intersection will now be safer for those walking in the neighborhood.  1153
