Scientists at the Department of Defense are working on giving families of troops who were killed in action some closure.For Brent Stevenson, advances in technology allowed him to honor his uncle.Stevenson ‘s uncle William Bruesewitz died in the attack at Pearl Harbor attack at the age of 26.This month, his family finally laid him to rest 77 years after he died.“Everybody is overjoyed and thrilled that we’re able to do this and very much humbled and honor that we’re able to do it at Arlington National Cemetery,” said Stevenson.Bruesewitz served in the Navy and died during an attack on his battleship, the USS Oklahoma.His remains were recovered, but could not be identified. For decades, he was buried as an unknown soldier. But advances in technology allowed the military to re-examine his remains and finally make a positive identification.“It was surprising. It was a blessing. It was really quite humbling,” said Stevenson.“Every year it is our goal to identify at least 200 of these service members. But we would like to get that number higher if we can find ways to do it,” said Dr. John Byrd, the chief scientist from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.Over the years, Byrd and his team have found new ways to use advanced DNA techniques to identify remains and they continue to make progress.“They have developed over and over again improved extraction protocols that allow them to get DNA out of bones where yesterday they couldn’t,” said Byrd.But Byrd admits the race against time, not technology, can be the biggest obstacle as older generations pass away.“It’s one of the greatest challenges of all and this is how do you find close or closet family members of missing service man from 1944,” said Byrd.Despite the challenges, the mission moves forward to give a name and dignity to thousands of fallen soldiers.“All of this work, ultimately, is being done so that this service member can have his name back and his family will know what happened to him,” said Byrd.“It’s going to bring a lot of comfort to a lot of families just like it has ours,” said Stevenson. 2097

Since it landed on Mars in 2012 NASA's Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater, a vast, dry ancient lake bed with a mountain at its center. Now, Curiosity has found sediments containing sulfate salt in the crater, which suggest it once held salty lakes.A range of salts have been found on Mars in different locations. Researchers interpret these as evidence of ancient brines. Salty water formations seemed to increase on the Martian surface as the planet transitioned to an arid climate 3.5 billion years ago.The new detection of sulfate salts came from sedimentary rocks dated to between 3.3 and 3.7 billion years ago. Curiosity has analyzed other, older rocks on Mars and didn't detect these salts in them.Researchers believe the salt is evidence of the crater's lake evaporating in the Red Planet's arid environment. They also believe studying younger rocks in the future could shed more light on how the Martian surface dried out.Gale Crater was created by an ancient impact, then filled in with sediment layers over time. Mount Sharp, the mountain at its center, was created by wind erosion of the hardened sediment layers. Those same layers act like chapters in the history of Mars and provide clues to its environment at each point in time.At the time the sulfate salts were present, lakes were probably scattered across the crater floor, fed by streams in the crater walls. Some Florida residents are leaving their cars at gas stations because fuel is running out before Hurricane Dorian arrives in the state.Miami resident Marion Wilkinson Scott told CNN on Friday he saw 12 cars that were left Thursday night at a Chevron on 152nd Street, five at a Mobile station in the Hammocks and two at another Chevron across from his house.He posted on Twitter a picture of one of those cars with a note on the dash: "I live close by. My car is out of gas. Please call me when more arrives!" A phone number was included."My friends have given similar reports from various places in the city. I think a lot of people were in denial about this storm. Now they are a bit panicky," Scott told CNN.He said he tried to top off his own tank at all those stations Thursday but had no luck."There isn't any. We've kept it topped off every night since last week (because Irma was a similar scenario for fuel scarcity two years ago). That ended last night when the stations all ran out of gasoline," he said."As a result, we have one unused car with a tank and another with half a tank.
