CHONGQING, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Non-infectious chronic diseases have become the major threat to human health in China as deaths from such diseases account for 85 percent of annual total deaths in the country, a report issued Saturday warned. The report said a 2008 national survey on mortality cause in China showed that the figure was up from 53 percent in 1973. Such diseases result in 3.7 million deaths annually. The Disease Prevention and Control Bureau under the Ministry of Health, and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted the study, which was released at a national forum on prevention and control of chronic diseases in Chongqing. The mortality-cause survey shows that four non-infectious chronic diseases -- Cerebrovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease and heart disease -- are the four principal causes that led to the largest number of deaths in China.Chronic diseases are the leading cause of mortality in the world, accounting for 60 percent of all deaths, reports the World Health Organization.According to the report, changes in lifestyle is one of the reasons that chronic diseases are increasing. Food with high contents of fat, protein and salt can lead to high blood pressure, high blood-fat and high blood sugar. Meanwhile, more people ride in vehicles instead of walking, meaning they exercise less.Experts at the forum called for more efforts to prevent and treat chronic diseases."It allows no delay," Kong Lingzhi, the vice director of the Disease Prevention and Control Bureau said, underlining the importance of reinforcing public education on chronic disease prevention and control."The earlier patients are aware of chronic diseases and receive proper medical treatment, the more likely they could overcome the diseases," she said.According to Kong, China has set a strategy to cope with chronic diseases in which government assumes the main responsibility, while the focus is on prevention. She said China would work to establish a prevention mechanism that pools the efforts of households, communities, professional institutions, and society at large.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- AOL's chief executive officer (CEO) Tim Armstrong has reached out to Yahoo for talks of a merger of the two companies, U.S. media reported on Friday.Armstrong is discussing options for a combination aimed at strengthening the two Internet companies, Bloomberg quoted two people who are familiar with the matter as saying. The report said that the AOL CEO had been interested in a merger with Yahoo last year but was rejected while Carol Bartz served as Yahoo CEO, who was ousted by Yahoo's board on Tuesday.Reconsidering the option after Bartz's departure, Armstrong has talked with private equity firms and investment bankers from Allen & Co. working with Yahoo.Under one scenario being considered, Yahoo would acquire AOL and Armstrong would become CEO of the combined company, said the source. Both Yahoo and AOL are suffering from declining revenues, struggling to compete against companies like Google and Facebook. Some analysts said that the merger could not provide a long-term solution to the problems the two companies face after they failed to keep up with Internet trends.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiroe may have an unprecedented dengue fever epidemic next summer, its mayor warned on Wednesday. The increasing number of dengue fever cases in the past few months shows similarities to the months predecing the 2002 and 2008 epidemics, Mayor Eduardo Paes said."Everything points to a new cycle of the disease, certainly the worst epidemic in Rio's history," he said.In 2008, Rio registered some 250,000 cases of dengue fever, with 174 people confirmed dead from the disease. In 2002, Rio had some 290,000 dengue fever cases and 91 people died.In efforts to halt the spread of the disease, Paes has declared a state of alert and is determined to take a series of measures to eliminate the habitat of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue fever through its bite.Paes also announced an increase in the number of health care units for dengue fever patients. The total cost of a dengue prevention and combat program, which is expected to last until April 2012, will reach 42 million reais (26.25 million U.S. dollars). There is no vaccine against dengue fever, but Brazilian scientists are currently working on one which will immunize against four types of the disease.

Beijing, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A sperm donation scandal disclosed recently has aroused growing concern in the United States.According to the New York Times' report, Ryan Kramer, the son of a donor, found that he has more than 150 half-siblings - they are all the children of the same donor."It's wild when we see them all together - they all look alike," said Cynthia Daily, mother of Kramer. As more women choose to have children on their own, the demand for sperm donors has surged. Some sperm banks are earning huge profits by allowing too many mothers to receive sperms from the same popular donors, according to the report. And this trend will lead to risks: rare genetic diseases could be spread more widely, and the children of the same donor could meet and, unbeknownst to them, commit incest, medical experts warned.Parents and donors are calling for a tighter regulation so that donor children can know more about their donors, and the number of kids from each donor can be limited.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The United Nations is warning authorities to be on high alert of bird flu as the virus appears to be returning. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization said in a statement Monday a mutant strain is spreading across parts of Asia, and there could be a spill-over to humans. However, it said at this stage, there's no need for any alarm.A mutant strain of H5N1, which can apparently sidestep defenses of existing vaccines, is spreading in China and Vietnam, it said.It said the variant of the virus appears able to side step Vaccines. The UN is concerned the new form of the virus could spread to Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia, as well as the Korean Peninsula and Japan."Wild birds may introduce the virus, but people's actions in poultry production and marketing spread it," said FAO's chief veterinary office Juan Lubroth in urging greater preparedness and surveillance, according to media reports.Outbreaks of the virus peaked in 2006 before it was eradicated from most countries.
