Without events like the San Diego County Fair, horse racing, several smaller festivals, and more, the fairgrounds' revenue has been severely depleted. The venue had already lost the KAABOO music festival heading into this year as well, which was set to move to Petco Park this year.The fairgrounds says it needs million in relief aid from California in order to survive."From creating cherished family memories and generating 0 million in economic impact, to serving as an essential evacuation site during wildfires and providing nearly 4,000 full-time-equivalent jobs, losing the Fairgrounds would leave a giant void in San Diego as we know it," a release from the venue said.Fairgrounds officials are calling on the community to urge their local leaders to support emergency aid from the state.The fairgrounds has also set up a website here to help locals show their support and connect with local and state leaders to urge them to help. 1194

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Coast Guard is searching for three people after a fishing vessel caught fire Saturday night, sending two people to the hospital and leading to the rescue of 15 more.According to the Coast Guard, the crew of a 42-foot fishing vessel named “Time Machine” called to report seeing a fire at 9:35 p.m. 28 miles south of Point Loma. The good Samaritans aboard the boat were able to pull 15 people out of the water, including two who were injured.10News spoke to the captain and crew of "Time Machine."Captain Mike Koesterer and his crew were on their way back into San Deigo from a fishing trip in Baja California when he saw an explosion in international waters. "I saw an orange flash," he said. For the next 20 minutes, he drove his vessel closer to the ball of fire. The next thing he saw will be etched in his mind forever. “We thought it might be a few people. But we kept on counting and counting and counting," Koesterer said.In the water, he and his crew witnessed 15 people screaming for help. Some had life vests. Others were wading. That's when his son Reeve changed into his diving suit and jumped in to help.“I knew there were going to be burns, but I didn’t think it would be that bad,” Reeve Koesterer said. He first pulled up a woman without a life vest. She desperately grabbed his hair and used Koesterer as a floatation device. The next few rescues were a blur. One by one, he carried and pulled the burn victims onto the "Time Machine." During the rescue, one of the victims told Reeve Koesterer that this was part of a human smuggling operation. “Do whatever we can to get them out of the water. No matter what the case is. They’re still lives,” Reeve Koesterer said. Andy Vo is usually responsible for shooting and editing fishing videos for the "Time Machine's" charter trips. Last night, he was also documenting the rescue on his phone. As the Koesterers were pulling people on board, Vo comforted the victims-- giving them blankets and coffee. “People that we rescued. He called us angels," Vo said. What are the odds that a fishing boat carrying Reeve Koesterer--  a young, bilingual English Spanish speaker, expert diver -- would be right there to save those lives? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The International Olympic Committee and Japanese government made an historic announcement Tuesday to postpone the 2020 summer Olympic games in Tokyo due to the coronavirus.Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed on Twitter that the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games have been delayed until no later than summer 2021.The announcement left several San Diegan Olympic hopefuls dashed of any immediate Olympic dreams."It's kind of hard to wrap your head around it because you have been training so long for this one moment," Allison Halverson said back in Februaray.Her tone changed Tuesday."I was kind of like, 'Ok. That's good to know.' Now I can kind of refocus and figure out how to train for that," Halverson said.Swimmer Michael Chadwick says the lack of open pools is sidelining any training, making competition right now even less of a possibility."Too much has happened too quickly for us to really understand what the ramifications of it all are," Chadwick said. "We as athletes cannot expect to make a push right now, physically, it's just impossible. Especially with not having a pool open."A new date for the postponed games has not been announced. 1199

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The journey has come to an end for hundreds of migrants seeking asylum in the U.S.A large caravan arrived in Tijuana within the last week and have waited until Sunday to cross the border into San Diego.Late Sunday afternoon, members of the caravan plan to turn themselves in to customs agents seeking asylum.Most of the roughly 400 migrants in the caravan are women and children who have been staying in shelters, seeking legal counsel before trying to cross the border.RELATED: Migrant caravan warned asylum may lead to separation from childrenBorder patrol agents released a statement Saturday saying several groups associated with the caravan have been illegally climbing a scrap metal border fence.The statement warned anyone with the caravan to “think before you act.” The Secretary of Homeland Security also said in a statement earlier this week that anyone seeking asylum “may be detained while their claims are adjudicated.”Protesters say the group is taking advantage of U.S. immigration laws. A group called San Diegans for Secure Borders plans to protest at Friendship Park.They say the migrants are unwelcome and that their claims for asylum are false. A protest was held on both sides of the border Sunday morning.
