SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When entering most newly reopened businesses in San Diego County, customers will need to sign in with their name and phone number.The change only applies to businesses now offering indoor services; the county’s public health order was updated to reflect the changes now in effect for the following sectors:Hair Salons & BarbershopsPersonal Care ServicesGyms & Fitness CentersRestaurants, Wineries, Bars, Breweries, and Distilleries that serve food.“It’s a very modest step that can aide in our close contact investigation, and I think can help slow the spread and help these businesses stay open,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Many people already give their name and phone number when making a reservation at a restaurant or booking a hair appointment; this won’t look much different, just more widespread, and businesses will also keep the sign-in sheets for three weeks.“In the event, there is an outbreak or exposure, I think most people would want to know if they’ve been exposed so they can quarantine or potentially get tested,” said Fletcher.If a COVID-19 outbreak happens, customers who visited will be notified if they were possibly exposed. The county will not collect or save the information.“It would only be used in the event there was a public health risk,” said Fletcher.Fletcher said the new plan could have possibly helped with contact tracing during the last wave or reopenings.“It’s certainly something we could have been done before, maybe a lesson learned from earlier, I think this could really aide in helping more quickly in letting folks know if they’ve been exposed," Fletcher said.Some people may have privacy concerns and be reluctant to give their personal information.Cybersecurity expert Ted Harrington, who is an executive partner at Independent Security Evaluators, says that while giving an email address would feel less invasive, the risk of providing a phone number and name is still minimal.“There’s no doubt what this order is doing is giving more information for people who don’t yet have a process to safely protect it, so we should accept that is the reality of what’s happening,” said Harrington. “But, is that a strong enough reason to not go to a restaurant or get your haircut or whatever? I wouldn’t be any more concerned than you might normally be with giving your phone number to a restaurant when you leave a reservation.” 2417

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people have been arrested for the fire that destroyed a Chase Bank during unrest in La Mesa last May.FBI San Diego said 19-year-old Alexander Jacob King and 33-year-old Ricky Bernard Cooper were arrested on Monday and charged with arson of a structure in connection with the bank fire. King was also charged with one count of looting and Cooper is facing four separate counts of looting related to various La Mesa businesses.On May 30, FBI investigators say the fire was set at the Chase Bank at 4791 Spring St., causing extensive damage to the building. Since the fire, investigators from La Mesa Police, San Diego Police, and the San Diego FBI have been piecing together evidence leading to Monday's arrests."While peaceful protest is a right protected by the U.S. Constitution and a time-honored tradition in our country, violent criminal activity, including arson and looting, will not be tolerated," the FBI said in a release announcing the arrests.Last May, demonstrators marched through the city and gathered outside of La Mesa Police Department to protest the arrest of an African American man by a white LMPD officer caught on video. The protest followed a week of demonstrations around the country stemming from the Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in police custody.Later that night, protests turned violent as rioters set several fires, and damaged and looted businesses. 1422

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— As Governor Jerry Brown visited Ground Zero for the Camp Fire in Paradise, a San Diego woman is doing the same. Corine Finnigan has more than 100 family members who lived in Paradise, and is now driving a truckload of supplies and cash to help them. Her adult niece, Christine Blackburn told 10news about her harrowing escape through the flames. While the fire was inching closer to her car, she shot video. In it, you can hear her trying to comfort her four and six-year-old children, sitting frightened in the backseat. But this escape story is not unique to Blackburn. In fact, her aunt Cynthia Watts also narrowly escaped the fire.“That was the most terrifying experience of my life,” Watts said.The taxi driver lived on the East side of town, where the fire began. Immediately, she packed her car and drove south. Minutes later, she was in bumper to bumper traffic. "I don't think we moved an entire inch in an entire hour,” Watts recalled.She tried driving on the Northbound lanes on Skyway Street, but the jam never let up. So she abandoned her car and ran for her life."I just started hoofing it,” she said. Watts walked and walked, passing rows of cars on the town's main road. She was even offered rides from drivers stuck on the road but refused. That was until she heard a co-worker screaming to get into his truck. The next thing she knew, they were in Chico, with absolutely nothing.“Thank you, God. I got out of there, in the nick [of time],” she said. This escape story is also not unique to Watts. In fact, she has nearly 100 extended family members in the small city, all who are now homeless."They have nothing,” Finnigan said. Finnigan is Watt's youngest sister of thirteen children. While she moved to San Diego a few years ago, Finnigan spent most of her life in Paradise. This year, she and her husband Bryan are spending their 22nd wedding anniversary, driving up supplies to her family.“We look like hoarders now, with bags and bags and bags of clothes, shoes, towel, and toys,” Finnigan said. With the help of her friends and co-workers, she was able to collect the donations, including ,000 in cash for the survivors in the Camp Fire. One miracle, Watts said, was that everyone in their family managed to escape in time.  2336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - You may be owed part of the million in unclaimed money sitting in city coffers, City of San Diego officials said Tuesday. If you have done business with the city in the past three years, you may be due funds from to ,797. Some of the funds are reimbursement checks sent by the city that were undeliverable based on the address on file. Any check uncashed after 6 months becomes unclaimed. “We want to refund every single dollar of unclaimed money,” said Fanela Espiritu, Disbursements Manager with the Department of Finance. “A simple search is all it takes to verify if you were issued a check that has gone unclaimed. There is no charge to search the data or to file a claim.” There are more than 2,100 accounts, city officials said.
