(KGTV) – A California bill co-authored by San Diego-based Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez would limit the use of so-called “less lethal” weapons against protesters.Leslie Furcron said she will never forget the pain she felt May 30 when she was hit in the head with a rubber bullet during a protest in La Mesa."My head was on fire," she remembers, “they should never be shot at somebody's head like they did to me."Furcron joined several other victims of so-called "less lethal" weapons used by law enforcement on protesters throughout the state in recent months, on a call Tuesday to discuss their support for Assembly Bill 66.Victim stories prompted Gonzalez to draft AB 66. It would create the country's first standards for how and when law enforcement agencies can deploy so-called “less lethal” weapons, like rubber bullets and pepper spray.It would also ban the use of tear gas for crowd control and set minimum standards for the weapons’ use by law enforcement; for example, when a person's life is at risk. It would also require data be collected on the use of those weapons and any resulting injuries.Gonzalez also claimed that one of the rubber bullet manufacturers has indicated that firing them at random into crowds goes against their intended use, citing a study in the medical journal BMJ Open.The sentiment was echoed by victims who described serious, and in some cases, potentially lifelong injuries, including loss of eyesight, traumatic brain injury and PTSD.AB 66 passed through a committee in early August and the state Senate is expected to vote on the bill this week. 1595

(KGTV) — An Idaho school district is investigating a school's teachers and staff after photos surfaced on social media showing them dressed as a border wall.Photos posted to Facebook showed teachers from Middleton Heights Elementary School dressed holding cardboard painted to look like a border wall, with the phrase "Make America Great Again."In another photo, staffers dressed in sombreros, ponchos, and fake mustaches.RELATED: Olympian Shaun White apologizes for offensive Halloween costumeBoth photos, posted to Middleton Heights's Facebook page, drew scorn online, forcing the school to remove the pictures, according to KTVB.Superintendent Josh Middleton posted a video to Facebook apologizing to parents and expressing his disappointment."I was shown those photos and [was] deeply troubled by the decision by our staff members to wear those costumes that are clearly insensitive and inappropriate," Middleton said. "We are better than this. We embrace all students. We have a responsibility to teach and reach all students, period."Our time right now is going to be devoted to investigating those events and those poor decisions that were made," Middleton added.It's unclear what type of disciplinary actions the teachers and staff face. Gavin Newsom on Monday announced updated guidance for hair and nail salons and barbershops in California that would allow those businesses to shift their operations outdoors amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.Last week, Newsom announced the shutdown of indoor operations, including beauty services, as COVID-19 cases across the state increased.In the days following Newsom’s order, restaurants were able to move dining outdoors, but barbershops and hair/nail salons were not able to do work outside.During a Monday press briefing, Newsom said the state updated its regulations for barbershops and hair salons for when they are moved outdoors.Some of the guidelines include:-- Face coverings required for employees and customers during service; workers should also have access to face shields, gloves and other personal protective equipment-- Outdoor operations must be under a tent, canopy or other sun shelter as long as no more than one side is closed, allowing sufficient outdoor air movement-- Temperature screenings for employees; screenings recommended for customers upon arrival-- Businesses should confirm customer appointments in advance and ask if a customer or someone in their household exhibits COVID-19 symptoms-- Stagger appointments to reduce customer congestion at business; this will also give business time to clean/sanitize-- Recommended expansion of operating hours to space out customer appointments-- Suspend walk-in visits-- Frequently disinfect commonly used surfaces and workstations-- Clean and disinfect all electrical and non-electrical tools-- Ensure any outdoor shade or outdoor working area has the same ventilation and airflow as the outdoors-- Have designated outdoor area for customers to waitClick here to view the state’s complete guidance sheet for hair salons and barbershops.For nail salons, some of the guidelines for operating outdoors include:-- Clients will be asked to apply hand sanitizer before nail services-- Employees should wear face shield with face covering when performing service on client’s face or neck areas (when he/she is not wearing face covering)-- Clients won’t be allowed to have a manicure and pedicure on the same visit-- Workers must have disposable gloves when performing services-- Businesses will have to evaluate if plastic partitions can be used between employees and clients; implement social distancing of workstationsClick here to view the state’s complete guidance sheet for nail salons and other personal care services, including massage therapy. 2549
