SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Blood Bank asked Friday for the public to donate blood over Memorial Day weekend to make sure local patients have an adequate supply.Summer can be difficult for blood centers to meet supply needs due to donors taking vacations and schools being out of session.“We’re asking our community to keep our blood supply at a safe level by donating as individuals, or hosting blood drives through local businesses, churches and schools,” said San Diego Blood Bank CEO, David Wellis. “There is no substitute for blood – donations are needed now.”   Most San Diego Blood Bank collection centers will be open Memorial Day weekend and there are perks for donors.San Diego Padres: Donate at any SDBB donor center or mobile drive between May 24 and June 4 and receive a voucher for two tickets to a future Padres game.USS Midway: Those who participate in the museum’s blood drive will receive free entrance on May 28.Just My Ticket: Attendees will receive one free ticket to the San Diego County Fair when they sign up for the Just My Ticket e-mail service between May 25 and May 31.Next Tuesday, May 29, San Diego County Credit Union will host blood drives at six local branches from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. 1243

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of Californians gathered Saturday night across the state to protest the newest restrictions put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Last Saturday, Syndie Ly helped organize the first "Curfew Breakers" rally. "Across 16 cities, we had 10,000 people show up," she said.Ly lives in Huntington Beach and said in four days their Facebook page "blew up."She said people are frustrated by the curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. saying it is an overreach, "when the government starts telling you when you can leave the house, how many people you can invite over to your own home."What's happening in the U.S. reminds her of when her family escaped in Vietnam."I was born in China and my parents emigrated to Vietnam, and we came here [to the U.S.] legally but we came here as refugees to escape North Vietnam during the fall of Vietnam ... Just being told what to do, a lot of the government overreach, I feel we're actually on the brink of getting back to that and that's why I'm involved in this," said Ly.She said between layoffs and businesses being forced to close, the impact on people's livelihoods is worse than the virus itself."It's our lives, and we feel we are responsible individuals that can make our own decisions," Ly said. The rallies will continue every Saturday, starting at 10:01 p.m. until Ly and the organizers see change, she added. In San Diego, a rally is planned for Saturday at 10:01 p.m. at 910 N. Harbor Drive. 1497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, July Fourth went off with a bang. San Diego Police said Monday that the department received hundreds of calls regarding illegal fireworks this holiday weekend.Despite canceled fireworks shows throughout the city, the department received 323 calls due to fireworks this year. The figure represents a significant uptick since last year, when the city received only 76 calls about fireworks.Despite the increase in calls, San Diego Police say they aren’t aware of any injuries due to the displays. The report comes after the City of San Diego announced that it would cancel this year’s Big Bay Boom to help halt the spread of COVID-19.According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, all consumer fireworks are illegal in the City of San Diego. That list includes sparklers, firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets, and even poppers. The National Fire Protection Association says that fireworks account for more than half of reported fires in the U.S. on Independence Day. 994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three San Diego universities were ranked among the best colleges in the nation, according to an annual study.Princeton Review's "Best 385 Colleges" survey annually ranks to best colleges in America and in San Diego, students have a lot of reasons to be proud.San Diego State University; University of California, San Diego; and University of San Diego all made the list (in no particular order.) The review surveyed 140,000 students on a series of topics, including campus culture, professors and administrators, and school services. While the three schools ranked among the best colleges, they also gathered their own individual accolades on Princeton Review as well:San Diego State UniversityThe Best 385 Colleges 2019Best WesternBest Value CollegesGreen CollegesLots of Greek Life (#9)The Princeton Review says students at SDSU are fortunate to receive a "quality, affordable education" with a wide variety of majors and minors, and course flexibility.
