SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Warning that the change would pose serious threats to public health and safety, the San Diego County Police Chiefs' and Sheriff's Association Monday announced its opposition to a state bill that proposes extending California's daily alcohol sales cutoff time from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy, vice president of the law enforcement group, asserted that Senate Bill 58 -- which calls for allowing bars in 10 cities throughout the state to keep serving drinks for an extra two hours a day as part of a pilot project -- would have negative effects on communities ``that are within driving distance of the cities where the bars (would) stay open later.''``Extending alcohol sales means more drunk drivers during early-morning commutes, more DUI crashes, more injuries and more deaths,'' Kennedy said, adding that the change would ``impact our ability to respond quickly to other emergencies.''Under SB 58, bars in Cathedral City, Coachella, Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland, Palm Springs, Sacramento, San Francisco and West Hollywood would be cleared to remain open two hours longer each night.The change would affect more than three-quarters of the state's population, according to a letter sent from the police association to the author of the bill, Sen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 65-year-old woman who was hit by a vehicle while crossing a Serra Mesa road Monday has died.The woman was walking to her car with her two adult children in the intersection of Ruffin Rd. and Village Glen Drive just before 8 p.m., according to San Diego Police.Her children separated and the two children made it safely to the other side of the intersection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- A San Diego County deputy facing charges that he groped 13 women was arrested again Thursday on five new charges, including forcible oral copulation.Richard Fischer, 32, is being held on million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning in a Vista courtroom.Fischer faces more than 10 years if convicted on the new charges, according to the District Attorney. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 29-year-old Cal Fire firefighter who died Monday after a training hike is being remembered. Yaroslav Katkov was hiking Sunday with his crew from Cal Fire / San Diego County Fire Station 16 in De Luz when he had a medical emergency, Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said. Katkov was flown to Temecula Valley Hospital in Riverside, where he died Monday morning. His cause of death was not specified. “On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our sincere condolences to CAL FIRE Firefighter Yaroslav Katkov’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. It’s the work of brave firefighters like Yaroslav that keep our communities safe, and we are deeply grateful for his service,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom and Porter ordered flags at the Capitol and Cal Fire facilities to be flown at half staff.Porter said Katkov joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in August 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 105-year-old World War II veteran is set to receive his college diploma 83 years after graduating.Bill Vogt, who was one of the first students to set foot on San Diego State University's campus after it opened in 1931, will receive his diploma in commerce retro-dated to Feb. 1, 1935, on Thursday.Vogt graduated from SDSU mid-year in 1935 but never got a printed diploma. He is the last remaining SDSU student to have attended classes at the university's old campus in University Heights, according to the school.The special presentation comes after Vogt elected to become a lifetime member of SDSU Alumni in May, a special alumni program offered by the university. He's also believed to be the oldest person ever to become an Alumni lifetime member, the school added.The WWII veteran served in the US Navy, and also served in the Korea and Vietnam wars. He's spent several years working on the East Coast as well since his graduation. 984
