SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a 27-year-old man who was fatally shot last weekend in an apparently unprovoked attack near the handball courts at the Linda Vista Recreation Center.Officers responding to reports of shots fire around 11 a.m. Sunday at the recreation center, 7064 Levant St., found San Diego-resident Israel Castro suffering from at least one gunshot to his upper body, San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown said.Paramedics took Castro to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Brown said.While officers were at the hospital, a 30-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound was brought in by a private vehicle, the lieutenant said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorcyclist was hospitalized with several broken bones after crashing into a pickup truck that turned in front of him in the El Cerrito area of San Diego, authorities said.It was reported at 7:16 p.m. Saturday in the 5500 block of El Cajon Boulevard, said San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The 29-year-old man was riding a Ducati motorcycle eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard when a 45-year-old man driving a Toyota Tacoma made a left turn in front of him while aiming for a private driveway, violating the motorcyclist's right of way, Heims said. The motorcycle crashed into the pickup truck.The pickup truck driver was arrested for suspicion of felony DUI, the officer said. 706

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight people were selected to serve on the county's Independent Redistricting Commission, in a random drawing during today's San Diego County Board of Supervisors meeting.Commissioners will redraw boundaries for the county's five supervisorial districts by December 2021, based on new federal census numbers.Those chosen to serve are David Bame, Colleen Brown, Amy Caterina, Chris Chen, Sonia Diaz, Barbara Hansen, Arvid Larson and John Russ.Bame lives in District 1; Russ lives in District 2; Caterina is in District 3; Diaz, Hansen and Larson live in District 4; and Brown and Chen live in District 5.The redistricting process happens every 10 years. Andrew Potter, clerk of the Board of Supervisors, said the commission will have 14 members with the appropriate skills, and also reflect the county's political diversity.Using a raffle roll cage, Potter and two colleagues drew names from a pool of 59 qualified applicants. Nearly 300 people applied to serve on the volunteer commission.The commission will meet later this month, and choose six more members out of 51 qualified applicants. There must be a full commission seated by Dec. 31, according the county.The commission must hold at least seven public hearings, and at least one must take place in each supervisorial district. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Citing the potential risks of sexual and physical abuse to children, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan today urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Customs and Border Protection agents, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, intercepted two smuggling boats, arrested six people and seized roughly 528 pounds of methamphetamine and 941 pounds of marijuana off the coast of San Diego over the weekend, authorities reported Tuesday.The first apprehension happened around 1:10 a.m. Saturday, when agents detected a panga-style boat traveling northbound off the San Diego coast, according to CBP officials. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour helped CBP agents chase down the boat, which was eventually halted around 12 nautical miles west of Oceanside when agents fired shots into the suspects' engine.Agents arrested four people from the roughly 28-foot boat and seized 528 pounds of methamphetamine.The second seizure happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when the crew on U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Haddock responded to a report of a suspicious vessel and boarded a fishing boat that was docked at the San Diego Bay channel.CBP agents also responded to the vessel and found two people who did not have proper documentation to be in the United States.
