SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The US Census is looking to hire thousands of people in San Diego, and hoping that /hour and flexible schedules are enough to entice people to apply."It takes a community to count a community," says Census Outreach Specialist David Bennett. "We're trying to count everybody once, only once, in the right place. We need help."Right now, the Census is putting on a hiring blitz around the country, with half-a-million jobs to fill. They're canvassing college campuses and other public places where people may be looking for a part-time job."It's for people, especially in this gig-economy, who are looking to get some extra money and be a part of history," says Bennett.Jobs range from counters who will go door to door to management. They can last anywhere from 6 weeks to two years. Pay starts at .50/hour."It's so important," says Bennett. "Our founders wanted to make sure our government looked like our citizens. That's why we do the Census."To be eligible, you must be a US Citizen, 18 years or older, and available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Bennett says there are some exceptions if you're not a citizen but speak a foreign language that can help with the count.Applications take about 10 minutes to complete and can be done online or over the phone. 1303

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The target at the center of a murder for hire plot is suing his former business partner and his associates. Ninus Malan says, he suffers from severe emotional distress as a result of his business partners actions."I wish this would go away, but I wake up every morning, and it's there," Malan told 10News. In November, federal authorities charged Salam Razuki, Sylvia Gonzales and Elizabeth Juarez with offenses related to a conspiracy to kidnap and kill a business associate over a dispute involving real estate investment properties, most of which were leased to marijuana dispensaries.   According to a complaint filed on November 2018, in October of that year, Salam Razuki and Sylvia Gonzales met with a Confidential Human Source and asked the source to arrange to kill Malan. The complaint says according to Razuki and Gonzales, they had invested in multiple properties and business ventures together and were not involved in a civil dispute over their assets. The complaint alleges, "Razuki and Gonzales told CHS1 (confidential human source) that they wanted CHS1 to 'Shoot him in the face,' 'to take him to Mexico and have him whacked,' 'or kill him in some other way.'"Federal authorities say Elizabeth Juarez later joined Razuki and Gonzales, and the three talked about having Malan killed.The complaint says the confidential human source, Gonzales, and Juarez discussed a cost of ,000 for "the job." Federal authorities say during one of the meetings, Gonzales went to the Goldn Bloom Dispensary and returned with ,000 cash. "After the meeting, CHS1 provided agents with ,000 case provided by Gonzales," the complaint says.Federal authorities say, "according to the complaint, on November 15, 2018, the source met with Razuki and stated, 'I took care of it.'" Razuki replied, "So he will take care of it, or it's done?" The source replied, "Done." Malan told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin that he's now forced to live his life day by day afraid for his family's safety. "My nine-year-old daughter had to see this on the news, and she knows all about it," Malan said. "I don't know how to explain it to her." Malan is suing Razuki, Gonzales, Juarez and a handful of businesses. The lawsuit alleges, interference with exercise of civil rights, unfair competition, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence. The lawsuit says the "defendants committed the acts herein despicably, maliciously, and oppressively, with the wrongful intention of injuring plaintiff, from an improper and evil motive amounting to malice, and with the conscious disregard of the rights and safety of Plaintiff and others." "Mr. Malan and Mr. Razuki were involved in a number of businesses together," said Malan's attorney John Gomez of Gomez Trial Attorneys. "That relationship kind of fell apart, so litigation commenced." Gomez says Razuki brought a civil suit against Malan and Malan filed a lawsuit against Razuki. "That's a big litigation involving a lot of money," Gomez said. "Mr. Razuki apparently thought it was ok to put a hit on Mr. Malan to eliminate him from the litigation." Gomez told 10News all the businesses and entities named in the lawsuit are affiliated with Razuki and participants in the litigation. "When he puts a hit on Mr. Malan to advance the litigation he's doing it on behalf of all of these businesses and people," Gomez said. With a criminal case underway, Malan was limited in what he was willing to discuss. He thanked the FBI, his family and told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin he'll always be looking over his shoulder. "In the courts is where I'm seeking justice, not only for me but for my family who were terrorized by these people," Malan said. Criminal defense attorneys for Gonzales and Juarez have not yet responded to 10News requests for comment.Razuki's attorneys told 10News they have no comment. 4194

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Though some of Balboa Park and its museums have partially reopened, the San Diego Natural History Museum will remain closed until 2021."The Nat" is keeping its doors closed for the rest of the year, despite whether public health orders allow the museum to reopen with coronavirus-related restrictions. Officials said the decision to keep the museum closed "was not an easy or obvious decision."During the five-month closure, museum staff said they will focus on exhibition space projects and programs, including:A new "California Blooming" exhibit upon reopeningConstructing an ADA-compliant ramp on the museum's east entranceDeveloping a new museum cafe and retail storeConverting a row of staff offices on the fourth floor into a gallery for future exhibitsCompleting a master plan for gardens outside the buildingThe museum is also reimagining its Canyoneers program to virtual hikes and recommendations and developing more digital options for the community, and students and teachers."The museum we closed in March will not be the same museum we reopen," said Judy Gradwohl, president and CEO of The Nat."Our future will combine the best of our work before and during the pandemic in a hybrid model that connects people with the wonder of nature on-site, online, and out in nature."In the meantime, staff say they plan to stay engaged with the community.“I look forward to seeing how our creative and energetic staff will make the most of the next five months,” said Gradwohl. “To borrow an analogy from the monarch butterflies I’ve been rearing this summer, I look at this extended closure and our eventual reopening as emerging from a chrysalis, not a hibernation.”The museum has been able to keep about 100 of its full-time and part-time staff and doesn't expect any changes to those positions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three cars were totaled after a semi crashed into a hydrant in the Midway District, sending water spewing into the air. The crash happened on the 2300 block of Sports Arena Boulevard around 1:45 p.m.Water could be seen shooting into the air and flooding the nearby street. It wasn't immediately clear what led to the crash. According to authorities, the water gushing out of the hydrant also picked up rocks, sending them shooting through windshields of nearby cars and flooding them with water.  544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Valley Fire has forced many East County residents to evacuate, but one homeowner said he and his family have decided to stay in their home and ride the situation out.Leo Prado told ABC 10News, “Where are we going to go? It’s not like we just have luggage and we can go into a hotel. We have animals here.”Prado said picking up and leaving his home in the Deerhorn Valley area, near Jamul, isn’t an easy task, especially with horses and dogs on his property.Prado and his family are staying put, as their area is only under a voluntary evacuation as of Tuesday afternoon.According to Prado, his property has not had power since the Valley Fire started on Saturday.
