(KGTV) — Back to school time usually means it's time for a new backpack.Nowadays there are tons of choices in how kids can lug around their belongings. Rolling backpacks, shoulder sling options, or the traditional two-strap pack. But which one is right for them?Will it support their back? Stay together through the school year? Does it look good? These are some of the questions parents grapple with in the middle of shopping aisles.MORE: 10News back to school resources for parentsA study by UC San Diego researchers found that children commonly carry about 10 to 20 percent of their body weight in backpacks, which is also the limit recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.UCSD researchers tested the correlation between backpack weight and a child's back pain. They tested a group of 8 children and measured spinal pressure at three different amounts of backpack weight meant to mimic 10, 20, and 30 percent of their weight.They found that as the weight of the backpack load increases, back pain in children increases and spinal disc height shrinks as lumbar asymmetry grows.Which brings us back to the original question: How do you make sure a backpack is right for a child? Shoulder straps should be wide and padded to help distribute the pack's weight evenly, according to the website Healthy Children. Abdominal straps also help distribute weight across the waist, hips, and back.It's also recommended not to wear backpacks on only one shoulder, which shifts all that weight and leads to neck and back pain.Wearing it rightThe top of a backpack should sit one to two inches below the top of the shoulders. Also, the pack should not sit more than four inches below the waistline.The bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back.Preventing injury on the goWhile at school, its important for kids to be careful while lugging around their backpack. If possible, students should stop by their lockers often to unload any unneeded gear from their backpack. If bending down, kids should use both of their knees while wearing a backpack and not bend at the waist.Learning back-strengthening exercises can also help build up muscles primarily used while carrying weight.Consult a pediatrician if necessaryTalking with your child's doctor about back health is vital. Speak with your child as well about being vocal about back discomfort. Gavin Newsom signed landmark legislation allowing student athletes to get paid for their name, image and likeness.In approving the legislation, the governor noted multi-million dollar television deals and highly paid administrators, but no payment for athletes."Colleges reap billions from these student athletes' sacrifices and success but, in the same breath, block them from earning a single dollar," Newsom said in a statement. "That’s a bankrupt model – one that puts institutions ahead of the students they are supposed to serve. It needs to be disrupted.”NCAA rules render student athletes ineligible if they sign with an agent or take endorsement money. The organization said in a statement that changes are needed, but it should not be a state-by-state approach. "As more states consider their own specific legislation related to this topic, it is clear that a patchwork of different laws from different states will make unattainable the goal of providing a fair and level playing field for 1,100 campuses and nearly half a million student-athletes nationwide," the NCAA said. John David Wicker, San Diego State's athletic director, said the legislation could put future Aztecs at a disadvantage. The law takes effect in 2023. 1258

(KGTV) — CAL FIRE officials say a brush fire that erupted in the Oak Glen area of San Bernardino County on Saturday was caused by a pyrotechnic device.The El Dorado Fire ignited just before 10:30 a.m. in the El Dorado Ranch Park in Yucaipa, according to CAL FIRE, before spreading north to Yucaipa Ridge. As of Sunday, the fire had burned at least 7,050 acres and was 5% contained, according to Cleveland National Forest. 429

(KGTV) — A new challenger is approaching the video game market, and it's aiming to become the Netflix of video games.Google Tuesday introduced a new video game streaming service called Stadia. The platform promises to deliver gamers instant access to games on TV, mobile devices, or desktop computers in resolutions up to 4K and 60 frames per second."When players use Stadia, they'll be able to access their games at all times, and on virtually any screen," the company said in a release. "And developers will have access to nearly unlimited resources to create the games they’ve always dreamed of."RELATED: Video games are now a legitimate high school sportIn a contrast to many video game consoles and PCs, Google says Stadia won't require any downloads, updates, patches or installs for its content.Stadia also comes with its own controller, supported through WiFi. Much like current generation video game consoles, the controller will have buttons to capture gameplay happening on a user's screen instantly. However, Google has also inserted a Google Assistant button for its AI-powered virtual assistant. The controller also includes a built-in microphone.According to Engadget, the service will actually allow viewers watching a Stadia streaming to jump in line to join their game as part of a "Crowd Play" feature.Google released a trailer for the upcoming platform, touting it as a new place for gamers to play together:The service will launch later in 2019 in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and in several European countries. Thus far, Stadia's main competition in the video market would appear to be the big three: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.While Sony's "Playstation Now" currently offers hundreds of games on a subscription-based service, Microsoft intends to release its own subscription service called "Xbox Game Pass."
