We're all familiar by now with the student walkouts in solidarity against gun violence. It's one way they've united in one voice to try to make a difference.  But some students are using art, and billboards, to send a message of their own.           For Yoki Ogbai, the overalls she's painting are more than a school project"Our colors are red and white," Ogbai said. "So a lot of wings a lot of bows glitter all types of crazy.The overalls are her latest work of art."Art for me is like a big sense of release," Ogbai said.Born in East Africa, she used art as expression when she moved to the U.S and a way for people to see her for who she is."A lot of times people don't really try to understand and don't really try to get to know a person before creating their onw ways," Ogbai said.  "Their own idea of who you are."So when she heard about a contest called the "Healing As One" campaign, she figured it would be an opportunity to inspire thousands to take a look at things in a different way."Cause he's kind of taking a picture and was like through the lens," Ogbai said.That idea grew into a billboard on a busy intersection that reads, "See Me, I Am Denver.""To be seen is to be acknowledged for everything you are and not for what you're expected to be," Ogbai says.Ogbai's billboard is just one of several in the Healing As One initiative. The topics are timely. One reads education not deportation. And others, encourage people to have courage and hope.Albany Reynolds designed the hope billboard."For me it's amazing because I've always been someone who wanted to speak out about issues like that," Reynolds said.  "And just bring attention to that."She placed the word over a picture she took of her classmate Kelly."It's giving us leeway to have artistic freedom and to put our ideas out there," Reynolds said. "And to say I want to represent hope and to have that on an actual billboard it's a good opportunity."In a time with young people across the country speaking out about the issues important to them, this group believes doing that through art can be just as powerful."If you look at any big historical changes throughout history art has been a very big part of that," Reynolds said."Even though I am just another person using my voice and what I know what I can do I really am able to make some sort of impact in someone’s life," Ogbai said.Inspiring change through billboards, advertising messages of a different kind. 2526

WASHINGTON D.C. (KGTV) -- Legislation introduced Thursday would block immigration enforcement actions at schools, hospitals and religious institutions, among other places. According to a news release, the “Protecting Sensitive Locations Act” codifies the Department of Homeland Security’s existing policies. The act requires that, with the exception of special circumstanced, ICE agents receive prior approval from a supervisor before engaging in enforcement actions at sensitive locations. The legislation was introduced by Senators Kamala Harris and Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, as well as 14 of their colleagues. “The priority of law enforcement officers should be promoting the safety of the communities they protect, not rounding up immigrants at schools, hospitals, and places of worship,” Harris said in part. We hear it all the time--save the bees! Well, one Colorado woman has come up with an idea that could do just that.Danielle Bilot, an instructor at the University of Colorado Boulder, created the Forgotten Hive project. The initiative aims to transform parts of parking lot spaces into rest stops for bees.“These native bees, some of them can only fly about three blocks before they need more food,” explains Bilot. “And, so, if we don't have a frequent enough system, they're going to potentially die trying to get to the next big park space.”Bilot, with the help of students involved in the project, added nearly two dozen different plants at the edge of one parking lot in Boulder. The new plants, which replaced shrubs, will hopefully give bees a place to get food year-round.Bilot says there are more than 3,600 native bee species around the country, and they're not just cool to look at.“They are more efficient pollinators for crops than the honeybees we often think of,” says Bilot.Bilot visits the lot at least once a week to observe the bees and to take note of how they’re responding to the plants.“If some of them aren't attracting native bees, and we're not catching them on them, we won't plant them in the next lot,” Bilot says.The instructor hopes to spread the word and to spread hives to parking lots around her city, the country and the world.“We're looking at a large amount of urban land that can be converted into productive green space for a variety of benefits,” says Bilot. “What city wouldn't want to do that?” 1548

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It will be even longer until Americans can travel aboard cruise ships. A group of the nation’s top cruise lines have agreed to suspend their U.S. operations even further.Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced Wednesday that its ocean-going cruise line members will suspend their U.S. operations until at least Oct. 31, 2020.The association, made up of companies like Carnival and Norwegian cruise lines, had previously suspended U.S. operations until Sept. 15. The CDC’s no-sail order lasts through Sept. 30.The association said it was a hard decision to further suspend operations, but it must be done to protect the public from the devastating effects of COVID-19.“This is a difficult decision as we recognize the crushing impact that this pandemic has had on our community and every other industry,” said CLIA in a statement. “However, we believe this proactive action further demonstrates the cruise industry’s commitment to public health and willingness to voluntarily suspend operations in the interest of public health and safety, as has occurred twice prior.”CLIA says its cruise line members will continue to monitor the situation with the understanding that they will revisit a possible further extension on or before 30 September 2020.“At the same time, should conditions in the U.S. change and it becomes possible to consider short, modified sailings, we would consider an earlier restart,” wrote CLIA.CLIA says its most recent economic impact study indicated the U.S. supports nearly half a million American jobs and generates billion annually in economic activity throughout the country.
