HARARE, July 7 (Xinhua) --The eighth session of the Zimbabwe/ China joint permanent commission ended in Harare on Wednesday with a pledge by the two countries to widen and deepen economic cooperation.The two countries discussed ways of enhancing various cooperation projects already being implemented and new ones in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors.An agreement was also signed for China to provide 1.5 million U. S. dollars to the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Hospital in Mahusekwa, Mashonaland East Province, for medical equipment and drugs.The hospital is part of the several projects that include two primary schools and an agricultural demonstration center that China is constructing in Zimbabwe as part of the eight measures agreed to at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in 2006 in Beijing.Other support from China includes a 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit facility extended by the China Exim Bank for procurement of agricultural inputs to boost food production in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwean foreign minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi praised China for setting a shining example to other world donors by honoring pledges it made to assist Zimbabwe under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation.Mumbengegwi noted that under the eight measures enunciated by Chinese President Hu Jintao at the FOCAC heads of state summit in Beijing in 2006, projects earmarked for Zimbabwe are now at various stages of completion.The Chinese government has also dispatched 10 agricultural experts and 23 volunteers to buttress the cooperation."By successfully implementing these measures, China has set a shining example for other donors and international cooperating partners who do not always honor their commitments," Mumbengegwi said at the opening of the eight session.He said Zimbabwe is also willing to learn and benefit from China's experience and expertise in the economic sphere, which has transformed the country into a global economic powerhouse."Zimbabwe will, therefore, welcome Chinese investment and is ready to discuss during the joint commission specific projects in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors," he said.Mumbengegwi thanked China Exim Bank for extending the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan repayment period from five to eight years, saying this would give Zimbabwe the breathing space to turn around its economy and enhance capacity to repay loans extended by China."The payment of the arrears and extension of the repayment period on the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan have paved the way for increased cooperation between Zimbabwe and China, " he said.While hailing China as a good example of a reliable and dependent donor partner, Mumbengegwi said he hoped the Asian country will similarly implement new eight measures announced by Premier Wen Jiabao at the fourth ministerial conference of FOCAC held in Egypt last year.He said the projects that have been identified for implementation in Zimbabwe are in critical sectors of energy, water, health, education, agriculture and social infrastructure.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

TAIPEI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's eastern Zhejiang Province and Taiwan have agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, tourism, finance and other sectors, according to sources with a Zhejiang delegation which concluded its eight-day visit to the island on Wednesday.The sources said that the delegation, led by Zhejiang governor Lu Zushan, purchased 31 million yuan (4.5 million U.S. dollars) worth fruits and tea products from local farmers in Kaohsiung and Nantou.Zhejiang provincial government also pledged to help Taiwan farmers to sell their agricultural products in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Yiwu and other cities in the province and offer them preferential treatment in participating farm produce exhibitions.Zhejiang Province plans to increase its imports from Taiwan to about 10 billion U.S. dollars by the end of this year, from last year's 7.7 billion U.S. dollars.After the first six Zhejiang companies which have been permitted to conduct investment in Taiwan, Zhejiang government will promote more companies to invest in the island.Commercial banks in Zhejiang and Taiwan have also achieved cooperation agreement on financial service, insurance, futures trading and other services for small and medium-sized companies on both sides.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment. HANGZHOU, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Accompanied by lively Chinese folk tunes, a group of men were playing the tambourine at a party on Saturday evening in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.Those watching could hardly have imagined that the energetic performers,all dressed in red and white costumes, were drug addicts who were also infected with HIV, even if the duplicate short crew cuts they wore somehow provided a hint of their unusual condition.One of the performers, surnamed Yue, said the group had practiced for more than a month to stage the best possible performance at the annual party of the drug rehab center, which fell on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.As China's first drug rehab agency to offer centralized treatment of HIV-infected addicts, the center has helped some 200 addicts beat their drug habits since 2003.Among 2,200 drug users receiving compulsory treatment in the center, 65 have tested positive for HIV.Now, they must obey a regular daily schedule, including three meals, physical exercise, entertainment and skill training that will enable them to earn a living after returning to their regular lives."I've adapted well to the regular life in the center. My physical and mental conditions are getting better,"said Yue, 34, who contracted HIV after sharing syringes with other drug users.Yue began using drugs in his hometown in southwestern Guizhou Province. After seeking a job in Zhejiang, he tried to kick the habit, but failed."The infection of HIV doubled my misery. Fortunately, I've gone through the hardest time in my life following the one-year free treatment here. Now I just want to live," he said.Unlike other drug addicts, many of those who are infected with HIV were forced into being admitted to the rehab center against their wills. Further, some even exhibited their intentions of taking revenge on society, said Ni Zhanwen, a police officer in charge of the center's management of HIV-infected inmates.In November 2008, a newcomer scratched the face of Ni's predecessor, Wang Jianxin, causing him to bleed.Wang was taken to the provincial center for disease control and prevention. He was asked to take medicine and be tested for HIV, which could be transmitted through blood.But Wang came back to work three hours later. "If I quit the job, the inmates would've felt discriminated. That would have just added more difficulty to the center's work in the future," he said.In the past, police in the center wore protective clothing, gloves and gauze masks to prevent infection, due to a poor understanding of HIV, thus losing the trust of some inmates."We took off the protective outfits immediately after realizing the problem. But I've been concerned that the management staff could contract the virus in a bleeding fight or other accidents. Luckily, it has never occurred," Ni said.Besides potential health hazards, the center's police officers also suffered discrimination from others.A 27-year-old police officer, surnamed Meng, said his girlfriend left him after the girl's parents learned he worked in the drug rehab center.Last year, some 173,000 drug addicts were forced into treatment in China while 68,000 former addicts had stayed drug-free for more than three years, according to figures released in March in the 12th annual report on controlling drugs by the National Narcotics Control Commission.Statistics from a national database showed the county had about 1.33 million registered drug addicts by the end of 2009.
