Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson detailed his wife's involvement Tuesday in picking out a dining room set for his office, telling a House subcommittee, "I left it with my wife."Carson said that his wife, Candy, selected "a style and a color" of the furniture set that ultimately cost HUD ,000."A style and a color was selected by her with the caveat that we were not happy with the pricing and they needed to find something," Carson told lawmakers.He went on to defend her, "If anybody knew my wife, they would realize how ridiculous this was. She's the most frugal person in the world."A HUD spokesperson had previously told CNN in a statement last month that "Mrs. Carson and the secretary had no awareness that the table was being purchased." Internal HUD emails indicated that the Carsons had picked out the furniture.Carson said Tuesday the issue of replacing the dining room set was raised "because people were being stuck by nails, the chairs collapsed with somebody sitting in it, it's 50 years old.""I said, 'OK, we can potentially do that.' I asked my wife also to help me with that," he told lawmakers."They showed us some catalogs. The prices were beyond what I wanted to pay. I made it clear that just didn't seem right to me. IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) -- Some South Bay parents said they are frustrated with their internet company after they learned of planned outages during the middle of the school day.Michael Crawford’s daughter is in her first year of high school and like many local students, is starting the year online. Crawford said the transition to virtual learning has not been easy for her. When he learned of the Cox communications outage planned for Tuesday, Crawford said it only added insult to injury. According to a notice he received on his door Friday, the planned service outage was slated to begin at 5 a.m. and last until three in the afternoon.He called Cox Communications, but did not get any answers. “I spent an hour on the phone with them. The lady seemed very sympathetic at first and then she [came] back on the phone and said there’s nothing we could do about it,” Crawford said.His neighbors received the same notice about the planned outage. Crawford questioned why the company doesn’t perform the work later in the day or on the weekends.“I pay them 0 a month for my services and that’s just my house,” Crawford said. “This is a lot of money they’re making and I don’t see why they can’t just pay some overtime for a Saturday. We’re all making sacrifices right now and even the big companies need to make the sacrifices as well.”A Cox Communications spokesperson confirmed the outage due to network upgrades. She said the time on the notice is a window and the average time that a customer is without service is two hours.“We recognize the inconvenience to our customers,” said spokesperson Ceanne Guerra. “Our crews are working really hard to complete this work as quickly as possible. Imagine applying for the top colleges in the United States hoping to get accepted to at least one.Well, that was the least of Mekhi Johnson's worries when applying for colleges this year. The Baltimore senior said that at six years old he heard a story on the radio about a student who was accepted to all of the Ivy League schools and knew that was his goal."I'm going to do that one day," said Johnson.And on 'Ivy Decision Day' he learned that he finally made it a reality. Johnson, who attends the Gilman School in Batlimore, serves as the President of the Diversity Council, a member of the school's acapella group, school band, and an avid volunteer, all while being a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student with a 98.1 average.More than 280,000 applicants applied to Ivy League schools last year. Out of that number, less than five of them were able to achieve acceptance by all eight colleges. Johnson is not only a 'goal getter' but he's the first Gilman student to achieve this distinction of acceptance.   1072
