LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Head to football practice at La Jolla High School, and you'll hear plenty of positivity and encouragement. You'll also see the phrase "Sail The Ship" in red block lettering on the back of every shiny black helmet."SAIL is our motto. It stands for selflessness, accountability, integrity, and love," says senior Evan Brown. The second-oldest high school in the San Diego Unified School District, La Jolla's football program hit a rough patch in recent years. The Vikings hadn't posted a winning season since 2007, when most of the current players were in preschool and kindergarten. The changed when head coach Tyler Roach took over a couple of years ago, and the Vikings are hoping to build on 6-6 and 7-5 records the past two seasons."When I took over, kind of figuring out what we wanted to be about, how we wanted to establish our culture, trying to latch on to the Viking motto, and that's where the "Sail The Ship" motto came up."Roach admits he borrowed the idea from Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck. Fleck made the phrase "Row The Boat" famous as a motto when he coached Western Michigan to a 13-1 record and a Cotton Bowl appearance in 2016."P.J. Fleck's a guy a look up to a lot," Roach told 10News. "I researched a lot about his program, his excitement, and his energy."It's an energy Coach Roach hopes will lead to more winning seaons at LJHS.The Vikings are getting the 10News Pro Treatment this week, with daily coverage of the team all the way through their game against Santa Fe Christian on Friday night. 1566

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Virginia Military Institute has removed a prominent statue of Confederate Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Around 9:45 a.m. Monday, a crane plucked the statue off its base and slowly hoisted it away at the public military college in Lexington, where allegations of systemic racism roiled the campus this fall. Until several years ago, some cadets were required to salute the Confederate statue. VMI’s board voted to remove it after The Washington Post published a story describing an “atmosphere of hostility and cultural insensitivity.” Founded in 1839, VMI says it is the oldest state-supported military college in the United States. 664
Last Sunday, a gunman walked into a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and opened fire on the congregation and killed more than two dozen people. The next day, President Donald Trump told reporters the mass shooting wasn’t a “guns situation,” and instead blamed it on “mental health.”Politicians have linked mental illness and mass shootings again, and again, and again. In this week’s podcast, host Jimmy Williams talks to a journalist who looked into that link … and found that it doesn’t exist. For more on mental illness and violence, check out Olga Khazan’s story at The Atlantic. 625
LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — It took a true team effort to help disentangle a humpback whale spotted off La Jolla's coast this week.SeaWorld says the 35-foot whale was reported late Thursday by local birdwatcher Gary Nunn as its swam near shore. Rescue team members traveled about one mile out from Scripps Pier on Friday to find the animal tangled in about 900 feet of rope and weighed down by six fishing traps called pots.SeaWorld rescuers spent four hours cutting the whale free. A local fishing vessel — called McGhee Marie — helped haul the gear away. The whale then continued swimming northwest, rescuers say.RELATED:SeaWorld planning for aerial drone show test runSeaWorld's new dive coaster will be named 'Emperor'San Diego Zoo Safari Park's new platypuses are only ones living outside Australia"Lacking the ability to swim freely and forage for food, the whale would have died had it not been disentangled," SeaWorld said. The organization says their rescue team has specific training for large-whale entanglement responses. Of the more than 36,000 rescues SeaWorld crews have performed over the last 55 years, the company says more than 20,000 of those animals have been rescued by SeaWorld San Diego alone. 1222
