LA MESA, CA (KGTV) — Parents of children in an East County school district were looking forward to their kids returning to campus at the end of this month, but that might not happen.Students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley District are scheduled to return Nov. 30, but if San Diego County's COVID-19 cases push the county back to the most restrictive purple tier, that will not happen.Meg Jacobsen is the executive director of the district's education services. Her seven-year-old daughter is also a student in the district."My daughter loves to go to virtual school, but being on a zoom all day can be hard for students, especially little ones," said Jacobsen.Under the state's health mandate, schools that are already open in some capacity would not be affected by moving back a tier, but schools that are closed would not be able to open."If schools have opened for in-person learning, then they can continue with what they are doing. At some schools, where they may have opened several grade levels, say they opened K-3, and they planned to continue adding grade levels, those schools would be able to continue doing that," said Bob Mueller, program specialist at the San Diego County Office of Education.The mandate applies to individual school sites."In other places, where you might have one school in a school district opened and other schools not, those schools would be frozen," said Mueller.Jacobsen is hoping the county's number of COVID-19 cases goes down."This has been a rocky road the past six months for us. Our teachers have been just absolutely amazing," said Jacobsen.The district initially planned to open in mid-October but pushed back the date partly because of the outbreak of cases at nearby San Diego State."Like so many things in 2020, we've had to, I think the word is, pivot, make plans A, B, C and then when we find something new, we are prepared, but we have to be prepared and adjust the way we go," said Jacobsen.San Diego Unified is still planning to bring more students back on campus in January. Oceanside's school district is bringing back elementary students on Nov. 9, middle, and high school students are scheduled to return in January.Schools impacted by the purple tier would not be able to open until mid-December."Schools that haven't reopened in any capacity would essentially be frozen there for a minimum of five weeks," said Mueller."It's a waiting game at this point," said Jacobsen. City leaders say the goal is to get recommendations to help the La Mesa better respond to emergency situations.On May 30, hundreds of rioters descended on the small La Mesa Village business district setting fire to numerous vehicles and buildings, including a bank and looting business.Looters also struck a Walmart, Target, Vons, and several stores in the La Mesa Springs Shopping Center.The city wants to let community members voice their concerns and ask questions.Community members can submit questions in advance and find a link to the zoom conference HERE 916

LeBron James is being sued after being accused of stealing an idea for a TV show, according to TMZ Sports.Adventure Enterprises said in the lawsuit that it pitched a TV show to LeBron called "Shop Talk," where celebrities share their business success stories while getting haircuts in a barbershop, TMZ Sports reports.The tabloid said the company claims it had several talks with LeBron's company, UNINTERRUPTED, about the idea. The talks reportedly went on for two years, fleshing out all the details for a strategy pitch to networks.Adventure Enterprises claims LeBron cut the company out and created a ripoff show called "The Shop," featuring LeBron in a barbershop with others talking about cultural experiences, according to TMZ. The show aired as a webisode.Adventure Enterprises said it confronted LeBron's people and only received an apology and the assurance that it wouldn't happen again, the tabloid wrote. But another episode aired on ESPN.Now, Adventure Enterprises is looking to get an injunction to stop LeBron and his company from producing any more episodes, according to TMZ. Las Vegas police say they have found the body of a young child inside of a duffel bag after a mother told them that her 3-year-old daughter disappeared during a walk to a local grocery store.The woman called police around 9 p.m. local time Thursday. She told police she was walking with her four young children to Albertson’s, across the street from her apartment complex.The child's grandmother also contacted Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas and told the TV station that her grandchild was missing.Police officers searched the woman’s apartment first, not finding anything, and then the neighborhood. They decided to search the apartment again because parts of the woman’s story did not add up.During the second search, the body of a small child was found in a bag in a closet. Police officers detected a strong odor and it appears the body may have been in the closet for a few days. The woman was placed in custody and the other three children are in protective custody.The missing girl's father was arrested earlier this week after police received a call about a domestic disturbance.   1115

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A police officer recruit in Indiana has been fired after his department received "credible" information the officer participated in a neo-Nazi internet chat forum in 2016.According to a report from Lafayette police, the department was tagged late Friday on its official Twitter page with information specifically identifying the officer.In a statement, Chief Patrick Flannelly said the department's internal affairs division began an immediate investigation and determined that the officer did participate in the online forum and that the information provided to the police department was accurate and credible.We have chosen not to identify the officer at this time, since he has not been charged with a crime.The chief said the officer's comments "were not in harmony with the spirit of cooperation and inclusion in the community that the Lafayette Police Department values."The officer was hired by the department in June 2020 and has been working solely in a training environment and has had no exposure to the public, the chief said."The Lafayette Police Department conducts very thorough and complete background investigations on all potential employees, which includes a complete review of personal social media accounts," Flannelly said. "While this information may not have been accessible through our investigative processes, we are appreciative that it was brought to our attention. We take great pride in our investigations and are extremely disappointed that we were not able to uncover this information in that process.
