Boeing is facing a growing number of lawsuits after 346 people died in two crashes involving 737 MAX planes. The family of one passenger, 24-year-old Samya Stumo, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company. “The potential of my sister and 156 others driven straight into the ground because of Boeing’s greed,” said Stumo’s brother, Adnaan, in a press conference. Kevin Durkin, an attorney representing Stumo’s family, says more than 20 whistleblowers have come forward, including pilots and Boeing engineers, who raised concerns about the plane and pilot training. “I think this plane, as designed, should never fly again,” Durkin said. “I think there has to be major changes in it that ensures it's safe.” Boeing is updating its software to fix the problem detected in both of the 737 MAX plane crashes. However, it's not just victims' families suing Boeing. The company’s own shareholders just filed a lawsuit, claiming the company put its profits ahead of airplane safety and honesty. Boeing has declined to comment on any lawsuits, but this month, its CEO promised safety is a priority. “When the MAX returns to the skies with the software changes to the MCAS function, it will be among the safest airplanes to ever fly,” said Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg.The 737 MAX was once Boeing's fastest-selling plane, but the company had zero new orders in the month of March for the plane, which remain grounded worldwide. 1440

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Around the world there are more than 100 safe injection sites, in countries like Canada, Australia and Spain. However, in the U.S. there are none. “In 2017, 1,217 Philadelphians died of overdoses. Last year about 1,150,” said Philadelphia’s former mayor, and the state’s former governor, Ed Rendell. Rendell has been leading a fighting for Philadelphia to open the first safe injection site in the country. He joined the organization Safehouse in this effort shortly after his best friend’s son overdosed on heroin. “When John Decker died, it became personal,” added Rendell. “Decker wasn’t my son, but I knew him since he was a 2-year-old boy.”Safe injection sites provide a place for users to inject drugs under medical supervision. The proposal has landed Rendell and supporters of the plan against the federal government. The Department of Justice sued Safehouse last year to block the site but then earlier this month this call happened. “It’s kind of a nuance. He just said it’s not unlawful activity,” said a board member of Safehouse who was on speaker phone in Rendell’s office. The call described a judge’s decision minutes earlier. The federal judge denied the Trump administration’s motion to block Safehouse from opening a safe injection site under the federal Crack House Statue. “It is clearly a victory,” said Rendell during the call. A victory against the D.O.J for now, but Rendell and Safehouse still have to win over the public. There’s a lot the criticism around the idea of a safe injection sites, some argue one in the U.S. would be promoting the use of opioid drugs rather than curbing it. “Ridiculous! No one is going to get hooked on opioids because they think of themselves well if I get her back and always inject in front of a medical personnel,” Rendell responds. However, many in the community of Kensington, where the safe injection site would be located, add additional concerns. BILOXI, Miss. – In the lobby of one Mississippi hotel, people aren’t the only ones checking in and out – so are the dogs. “They see that cage. They're like, ‘What is it?’” said the hotel’s director of sales, Teresa Johnston. The gazebo-like kennel is the temporary home for Basil, a 6-month-old terrier mix up for adoption from a local shelter and ready for checkout in the hotel’s lobby. “The guest just gives us their room number and the sweet little puppy goes up,” Johnston said. If the guest wants to adopt them, the dog goes home with them upon checkout. It’s part of a partnership between this Home2 Suites hotel near Biloxi, and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The idea is Johnston’s brainchild. “It's that simple,” she said. “And they've given us the ability to adopt right from the property.” The hotel hosts one shelter dog at a time; all are already spayed and neutered. It’s an out-of-the box effort to try to bring down overcrowding at the local animal shelter. “We have to go out into our community and get a little bit more involved in ways that people wouldn't really associate an animal shelter with,” said Bianca Janik, with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “And so that's a big part of why this program is so successful, is because they don't expect to see a shelter dog.” Since the program began late last year, more than 30 dogs have been adopted at the hotel by people who fell for those puppy dog eyes.
