"We've found ourselves in a really, really interesting situation right now with coronavirus. And also, dealing with a super low inventory across the country," said David Lewis, a realtor in the Atlanta area. Lewis says for those who are relocating, COVID-19 wariness may prevent potential buyers from seeing a property in person. Plus, traveling can be difficult right now."A lot of times, some of them we’re videoing the home for them and some of them are just looking at the pictures and submitting blind offers and just hoping, trusting us to give them a little bit of guidance and also making sure the inspections and things are in line to offer that level of protection," said Lewis.Experts say, when buying virtually, a good home inspection is a must. "It should catch most everything. Now remember, a home inspection is a visual inspection. We’re not allowed to take siding off a house, we see trim damage then that's what we see. We can’t take a look between that wall," said Donny Williams, the Director of Business Development and Marketing for All Atlanta AmeriSpec.Overall, he doesn't recommend buying a home without going inside it first, but he and many other inspectors at his company are seeing it more often now. "I was actually surprised the number of times it actually happened. The guys could remember seven to 15 times each. Times that by 18 guys and that's a lot," said Williams.Before the pandemic, Williams says he rarely would see people purchase homes sight unseen. But as long as contracting the coronavirus is a concern, home buying virtually could be here to stay. Just know that if you are thinking of buying a home this way, there are things a realtor won't be able to fully give their opinions on, such as the neighborhood."That's something that is always largely on the purchaser. There’s several laws and regulations around what a real estate professional can share and information they can give on a neighborhood. So, a lot of times that's always up to the consumer, anyways, right, to get a good feel for the neighborhood or understand the dynamics or school or surrounding area," said Lewis.Overall, make sure before you swipe right to buy a home, meet it first, if at all possible. (KGTV)— South Bay beaches are closed again, after millions of gallons of contaminated sewage water spilled from Tijuana, BC into Imperial Beach communities.It may look beautiful from afar, but up close, Giovanny Ceja says the waves were a little off Thursday afternoon. “We usually go to other beaches, and they look really clear, but that one was dirty and brown,” Ceja said. Ceja and his little sister spent the day at Imperial Beach, near the south end of Seacoast Drive, boogie boarding and building sand castles. To get there, he walked right past many warning signs. Large yellow signs read: “KEEP OUT. SEWAGE CONTAMINATED WATER.”“It’s a completely unacceptable,” Imperial Beach City Councilwoman Paloma Aguirre says.According to the International Boundary Water Commission, a Tijuana water collector ruptured Wednesday night. That spilled 3.5 million gallons of sewage water into the Tijuana River, which gushed into South Imperial Beach. “It’s incredibly frustrating because this is the summer. This is our time to have open beaches in Imperial Beach,” Aguirre said. “It’s because of the incredible negligence that the state of Baja California authorities have shown and the lack of accountability and leadership from our federal agencies.”So far this year, there have been 50 beach closure days in Imperial Beach. HOUSTON (AP) — Shackled at their ankles and wrists and their shoelaces removed, a long line of men and women waited on the tarmac as a team of officers patted them down and checked inside their mouths for anything hidden.Then one by one, they climbed a mobile staircase and onto a charter plane the size of a commercial aircraft.This was a deportation flight run by ICE Air. The chains would be removed and the shoelaces returned when the plane landed in El Salvador.An obscure division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operates hundreds of flights each year to remove immigrants. Deportation flights are big business: The U.S. government has spent approximately billion on them in the last decade, and the Trump administration is seeking to raise ICE's budget for charter flights by 30 percent.ICE Air Operations transports detained immigrants between American cities and, for those with final removal orders, back to their home countries. About 100,000 people a year are deported on such flights.While Mexican immigrants are generally flown to southern U.S. cities and then driven to the border so they can cross over, Central Americans have to be transported by air. And the large numbers of Mexicans who used to cross the border have largely been replaced by migrants from three impoverished Central American countries: El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.According to flight-tracking data, deportation flights to Guatemala and Honduras have sharply increased this year. And ICE's budget request for charter flights increased 30 percent last year compared to the year before.The agency estimated last year that it spends about ,785 per hour on the flights.ICE shifted to chartering private planes about a decade ago after previously using a government service with the U.S. Marshals. "If a judge says you need to be removed, we should be expeditiously working to execute that order so that person does not spend any longer in detention than necessary."But migrant advocacy groups say ICE Air is an example of how tougher immigration enforcement — from detention to tracking to removal — enriches private companies."The way you would save money on ICE Air is by deporting fewer people, not by privatizing the industry," said Bob Libal, director of Grassroots Leadership, which opposes immigration detention."ICE is a largely privatized agency," Libal said. "In many ways, it's been captured by the industries that profit from deportation and detention."The Associated Press observed a deportation flight being loaded last month at a private terminal of Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.The Boeing 737 had no markings suggesting it was a deportation flight. Instead, it had the insignia of Swift Air, a private company that also flies charters for political campaigns and professional sports teams, including the NHL's Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. In this case, Swift Air had been hired by Classic Air Charters, a Huntington, New York-based company that won ICE's deportation flights contract last year.Classic Air has been paid million this year by ICE, according to federal spending records. Their few belongings were in red mesh bags that workers sorted on the tarmac.Officers checked each detainee before letting them board, a process that took about 20 minutes.According to the agency, 29 of the 50 people who boarded the plane in Houston had been arrested on criminal charges, including four who were wanted in El Salvador for attempted murder or homicide, the agency said.The remaining 21 were considered non-criminal, meaning they were being deported for immigration violations. Twenty of the 50 had been deported before.ICE would not let AP reporters view the inside of the plane, but officials said the flights are orderly and quiet. A meal is served, and a doctor is on board. But all detainees — even those considered non-criminal — remain shackled until the plane lands."We try and be as humane as we can with everything that we do," Contreras said. In 2019, reported hate crimes were the highest they’ve been in more than a decade, new stats released by the FBI show.What is a hate crime?“It’s different depending on the state. The federal government has their definition and each state really has their own definition,” said Stacey Hervey, Affiliate Criminal Justice Professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.“Hate crimes are motivated by stereotypes, biases or prejudices against a certain group of individuals,” said Apryl Alexander, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Denver.Last year, the U.S. saw the highest number of reported hate crime cases since 2008, as shown by the FBI’s recently released 2019 stats.“Hate crimes are often fueled by people who feel slighted in some way, that they have some sense of injustice for who they are,” Alexander said.She explained why people follow through with hate crimes.“When we’re referring to Mexican people as rapists what does that do to your psyche? Are you internalizing some of that and is that fueling you to commit some sort of hate crime or microaggression.”These thoughts can lead to words, or even violence. The more you hear them the more they can impact your thoughts.“We have a current atmosphere right now that those on the fringes, and it doesn't matter what side of the extremist fringe you're on, kind of condones that violence,” Hervey explained. “Social media, because we've been cooped up, definitely has a role in encouraging…giving people the opportunity to find like-minded people who have their same viewpoints.”Hervey explained that current events, mixed with everyone staying home, and different groups targeting people on social media during the pandemic, are all having a big impact.“You're seeing these organized hate crime groups grooming these loner type individuals looking for this collective identity. Also what you see with gang membership,” Hervey said. “Social isolation is leading people to find their collective identity or group online.”Of the 8,302 hate crime offenses reported in 2019, a reported 57.6% stemmed from race, ethnicity, and ancestry bias. The second largest category was motivated by religious bias at 20%, according to FBI data.“It used to be based on sexual orientation was the largest group for hate crimes, and now it’s really turned to ethnicity and race,” Hervey said.“It’s affecting communities. What’s happening right now is communities of color being fearful of going out in public knowing these hate crimes are existing,” Alexander said.While not all hate crimes go reported due to fear, or differing definitions based on jurisdiction, Hervey and Alexander said bystanders can play an important role in awareness.“People are afraid to get involved because of increased violence in our society. My recommendation for people who witness something is to document it either through their phone or through a written format, and then encourage people to call the police so it can be documented because it is an increased problem today in society,” Hervey said. 3056
