Are you participating in Black Friday shopping this week? The season's biggest shopping event of the year might look a lot different than usual with many cities, states and retailers putting in restrictions due to COVID-19.For the first time, Deloitte’s consumer survey found that more shoppers plan to go online Thanksgiving weekend than to visit in-person retailers. The survey found that 58% of those planning to shop on Thanksgiving weekend will do so online, compared to 41% who say they will shop in person. Last year, 61% of shoppers said they planned on shopping in person compared to 51% who said they would shop online. A number of those surveyed said they would do both.If you plan on shopping on Black Friday, the Better Business Bureau offered the following tips:1) Stay Safe. Follow CDC guidelines to healthy and safe while in the store.2) Make the most of Black Friday deals. Start with a list of items and use sale flyers and promotions to determine which store has the best price. Set a budget and stick with it before heading out.3) Read the fine printSome retailers may offer an additional percentage off the purchase, but could exclude certain deals or items such as “door busters.” Watch for companies boasting a high percentage off; the item may be “75% off,” but the original price could be inflated. Carefully check the price tags, terms, and conditions. Research online using a secure wifi connection to see if competitors have the item at a better price.4) Plan out the excursion. Sometimes it's not necessary to wait to see what deals will be offered on Black Friday. Retailers often will release Black Friday flyers weeks ahead of time, so consumers can plan out their shopping spree. Make a map of the stores to visit and what items are at which store. Some retailors only honor sale ads during a certain time frame, or on certain days, and could limit the amount of deeply discounted items available for purchase.5) Sign-up for email alerts. Many stores release their best Black Friday deals and exclusive coupons to people who have subscribed to their emails. Sign up ahead of the holiday season, and then unsubscribe afterwards if needed.6) Do your research. Read product reviews on extremely discounted items. It could be a cheaper model or brand advertised, and not what was expected. Check BBB.org for Business Profiles of the stores and read what other customers’ have experienced.7) Know the return policy and warranty information.Pass along any information about returns, exchanges, repairs, and warranties to the person who will use the item. Gift receipts are an easy way for recipients to return or exchange a gift if it’s not just right, but make sure the item is able to be returned before purchasing.Visit BBB.org to look up a business, file a complaint, write a customer review, report a scam, read tips, follow us on social media, and more! 2894

As a primary care doctor at Vanderbilt University, Dr. John Scott can understand why people were initially delaying preventative care back in the spring, but now, many of the patients he’s seeing are sicker, having delayed routine care for months.“We’re going to have to pay that bill later, and the cost is going to be much greater,” he said. What worries Dr. Scott the most is the 50 percent drop-off in cancer screenings across the country. With Americans avoiding the doctor, they’re putting off preventative screenings for breast cancer, colon cancer and cervical cancer. Diseases that have a much higher rate of being cured when caught early.“So, the impact of that is significant when you think about the benefit of catching cancer at an early stage,” Dr. Scott added.Nearly one-third of Americans have put off healthcare during COVID-19, which is why physicians nationwide are now urging people to schedule that regular checkup sooner rather than later. According to the CDC, 40 percent of Americans are also struggling with mental health issues and depression right now, something most doctors screen for during regular checkups.“Healthcare is a marathon and you want to put the finish line as far out as possible, so if we start skipping steps, then we aren’t going to get to the finish line we want,” Dr. Scott warned. And since it could be months or even years before the pandemic is over, family physicians across the country are urging people to at least consider making that a trip to the doctor.“It’s safe to return. It’s safer to return than not, when we look at these long-term issues. There is medical care that needs to occur,” Dr. Scott added. 1670

Americans are calling out practices at some car lots more now than ever before.“We found a pattern of abusive and deceptive practices that the auto loan industry has been employing and unfortunately these complaints have sharply increased during the pandemic,” said Lucy Baker, Consumer Program Associate at U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).Looking at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's consumer complaint database, the U.S. PIRG found between March and July, there were more than 2,800 auto loan and lease complaints. That's more than any other 5-month period. This includes complaints like not getting auto loan relief, which the CARES Act didn't specify, but some lenders offered to work with customers. Also, complaints about broken payment systems that led to late fees, and issues with loan terms changing or yo-yo financing.“You go into a dealership, you buy a car you sign on the dotted line, but as your driving away, you get a phone call from your dealer that says, ‘hey the financing has fallen through, I’m going to take your car back unless you agree to pay more or pay a higher interest rate,’” said Baker. There were complaints about harassment over repossession and debt, as well as expensive add-ons like warranties, insurance, and service plans.High pressure tactics were another problem.“If you put somebody in a room for a long period of time, they're going to be so frustrated that they are going to want to get out of there and then you can pressure them into buying these things they don’t need,” said Baker.U.S. PIRG is pushing policymakers for auto loan relief programs, banning repossession, debt collection and negative credit reporting. It also has some recommendations for customers: Don't roll an old auto loan into a new loan, avoid buy here – pay here lots, and don’t get focused on low monthly payments. Instead, compare the total cost of the loan including interest paid.Officials also suggest filing complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It creates pressure on lenders to make things right. 2068

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of schoolchildren still learning remotely as the weather turns colder, some might benefit from a few investments in their at-home experience. The following items, all under , can help make distance learning more appealing to even the youngest learners.1. New background decorationsWhen your child is on screen all day, sprucing up their background with a wall decal or two can help keep them in school mode, especially when virtual backgrounds are prohibited by school systems. Consider shopping for a school-themed wall decal like crayons, pencils, numbers or books. A quick search on Amazon or Etsy pulls up dozens of choices for under .2. A clip-on selfie lightSmall selfie lights that attach to the side of a screen can help light up your child’s face and ensure the teacher can see them, too. This light is especially useful if your student is sitting in a dark room or has a light or window behind them. You’ll want to make sure it’s not too bright for their eyes, but selfie lights generally allow you to adjust the brightness.3. A paper plannerEven though distance learning largely takes place on a computer, it’s nice for kids to get some practice staying organized on paper. To keep track of homework assignments, due dates and even online classes, consider buying a small paper planner for your student. A pack of fine-tip colorful pens can also be a nice bonus.4. Online programs to boost learningAfter checking which free online programs are available through your child’s school, you might want to supplement your child’s learning with some relatively inexpensive academic games. Prodigy, a math game for students in grades one through eight, offers a free version and a premium version, which costs .95 a month (or less if you purchase a longer subscription). Scholastic offers a “Learn at Home” program that costs .99 a month. There are countless other options, so you might want to search online for educational games related to the subjects your child wants to practice.5. A stress ball to squeezeKids of all ages (and even some adults) can struggle with sitting still and remaining on video for class all day. If your child likes to fidget, you might want to consider buying a large stress ball for them to squeeze with their hands or feet off screen. It can help get out some of their energy so they can stay focused on class. If you search online for “giant stress ball,” you’ll find plenty of options for under .6. Blue-light glassesYou’ve probably heard about the blue light being emitted from computer screens that can irritate eyes and even keep you up at night. To protect your child’s eyes from that stress, or just to make a fashion statement, you might want to invest in some blue-light glasses. They filter out the blue light and also look pretty cool. While some are pricier, plenty of colorful kids’ models are available for or less.7. Fine-tip dry-erase markersTeachers often ask students to hold up their work on dry-erase boards or paper to help keep them on task. Using a fine-tip marker with an eraser tip can make it easier for small hands to fit more numbers or words on their dry-erase board; buying different colors can make it more fun, too. You can find multipacks for under online.8. Trifold poster boardIf your child is easily distracted or working in a room with other people — including other children attending school on different computers — then surrounding their front and side views with a trifold poster board can help them stay focused on class. They can even decorate the poster board with photos and drawings.9. Kid-size headphonesHeadphones can also help cut out distractions, and there are plenty of kids’ headphones on the market for under . If you’re willing to spend a few dollars more for wireless headphones, that can help reduce the temptation to fidget with the wires.More From NerdWalletNo Credit? 3 Steps to Qualify for a Great Credit Card3 Ways to Keep Your Distance With Contactless PaymentsIf Credit Card Relief’s a No-Go, Check Out Debt ManagementKimberly Palmer is a writer at NerdWallet. An Oregon health care network says it has placed a nurse on administrative leave after she shared a video on social media where she bragged about flouting basic public health measures that help prevent the spread of COVID-19.In a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon, Salem Health said it had placed the nurse on administrative leave pending an investigation after learning of the video.According to KPTV-TV in Salem, Oregon, the Washington Post and BuzzFeed News, the unidentified nurse originally shared the video on TikTok. Though the nurse later deleted the video, other TikTok users have since used her clip in a side-by-side "duet" video, and screen recordings of the original video have also gone viral on other platforms. The original TikTok shows the female nurse, clad in blue scrubs and a stethoscope, lip-syncing a scene from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," starring Jim Carey. 897
