SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border agents arrested 15 people over Presidents’ Day weekend during a smuggling event in Mission Bay.U.S. Border Patrol agents caught the smuggling incident in action on Saturday at about 2 p.m. at a Ski Beach launch ramp. As agents got closer, they say they noticed a large group of people quickly exiting the boat and heading for three vehicles.Agents stopped the individuals from getting away and questioned all 15 people involved in the incident.Agents say six people in the group were suspected of human smuggling and arrested. Five of them are U.S. citizens, including four men ranging from 20 to 30 years old and one 25-year-old woman, according to border officials.The nine other people arrested were male Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted to being illegally present.U.S. Border Patrol seized the boat and three vehicles at the scene. 899

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - By a unanimous vote, the San Diego City Council voted Monday to hike pedicab fees, making it nearly twice as costly to be a pedicab driver.      Police say the increase for annual operator fees from 2 to 9 is needed because of extra enforcement, including aggressive inspections and undercover operations targeting price gouging.Ali Horuz, who manages four different pedicab companies, says the higher fees will be a hardship, especially for drivers getting into the business.  He says right now, the local market is short about 50 drivers."It's going to be harder to find qualified drivers. We're competing against Uber and Lyft. It's definitely going to affect the market, where we are going to see fewer pedicab drivers," said Horuz.While the number of drivers is shrinking, the regulations may be increasing.  Citing complaints from the community, Councilman Chris Ward wants the city to set a uniform rate structure, while banning loud horns, flashing lights and amplified music. Horuz says the lights and loud horns are needed safety precautions, while overly loud music is a product of a few bad drivers.A council committee will look at the proposal Wednesday. 1240

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California health officials announced Friday the steepest climb in positive coronavirus cases in history."When I'm worried I'll tell you so you can worry with me and we're there," California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said. He's worried hospitals could be overwhelmed if we don't stop the rapid spread of the virus."This rapid rate of rise could be even higher if we don't act soon," Dr. Erica Pan, state epidemiologist and deputy director of the California Department of Public Health Center for Infectious Diseases, said.Pan added that we could have a higher spike than we saw over the summer.Many are taking their words to heart and stocked up to stay home. San Diegans saw empty shelves and product limits this week across the county, but officials urge consumers not to worry."We didn't put limits on early enough. There's plenty of product in the supply chain and we just thought it would be better to be proactive because when people only buy what they need there's plenty of supply in the supply chain," said. Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, asking customers to only buy what they need.When it comes to another lockdown, Director of the National Institute of Health Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's unnecessary. The avoiding congregating and crowded places. Outdoors is better than indoors, washing hands. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days after revealing its move to downtown San Diego's Petco Park, KAABOO announced it's under new ownership.KAABOO's new owner, Virgin Fest, the music festival arm of The Virgin Group, will not change the festival's brand of live music, comedy, art, and culinary experiences, KAABOO said in a release.While Virgin Fest Founder and CEO Jason Felts has acquired all of the festival's assets, KAABOO San Diego itself will also not be rebranded.
