Simone Williams’ hair measures 4 feet 10 inches in circumference, according to Guinness World Records.Williams has been growing her hair out for about 9 years, but she didn’t start wearing an afro with the record in mind. "The process was very difficult at first since I was accustomed to wearing my hair straight and I didn’t know how to manage my natural hair texture."Williams says it takes about 6 hours for her hair to dry, and she washes it about once a week. “I use a lot of conditioner because it helps detangle my hair. I section my hair into 4 twists while in shower,” she said."When my hair is fully styled and big and voluminous I get a lot of stares, a lot of comments, lots of compliments – I want to think that everything is positive, but there are some people who stare like they have no idea what’s going on or what they’re looking at,” Williams said.Williams said she was inspired by the previous record holder, Aevin Dugas, who held the women’s record for largest afro since 2012 with a circumference of 4 feet 7 inches.Dugas says as her hair has gotten longer, it’s gotten heavier and doesn’t stand out as much. She plans to get some layers cut and hopes to be in the running again for the largest afro."Rocking a natural ‘fro is something that really symbolizes your pride in being Black. And I feel like whenever I wear my hair very big and beautiful, I just feel that pride within me,” Williams said. Adding, “Styling my hair like this is a silent reflection of who I am as a Black woman, it’s dynamic, it’s larger than life, and it’s fun! A Las Vegas man says the possibility of him being deported caused his 14-year-old son to jump out of a moving vehicle, leading to his death.Reporters for Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas spoke to Ezequiel Anorve from behind bars at the Clark County Detention Center on Thursday night.Anorve, an undocumented immigrant, has been in jail since Aug. 17 on a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon. He's currently being kept on an immigration hold.Anvorve's family visited him in jail between 8 and 9 p.m. on Aug. 20. During that time, Anorve told his wife two sons that he may be deported to Mexico.Anorve's 14-year-old son, Silas, took the news especially hard. Just 15 minutes later, he jumped out of a moving car on a busy highway. Another vehicle ran him over, killing him,Anorve's older son also ran across a few lanes of traffic to try and save his little brother, according to Anorve, but it was too late.Anorve says the stress surrounding his possible deportation led Silas to jump out of the car, taking his own life."This is just a message from God, to show the world, not just Nevada, not just the United States, to show the world, how America is hurting and breaking families apart," Anorve said.Anorve is hoping to make it to his son's funeral next week but doesn't know if he will be allowed to attend. 1369

A co-author of a criminal justice textbook that included convicted sexual assailant Brock Turner’s photo next to the section titled “Rape” is standing by their decision.Last week, a student at Washington State University posted a photo of the book page on Facebook, and it has since been shared over 100,000 times.Callie Rennison, a University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs professor and co-author of “Introduction to Criminal Justice: Systems, Diversity and Change,” said that the vast majority of reaction she’s received has been positive. However, critics have said that even though Turner’s crimes may fit the FBI definition of rape, he was not convicted of rape as defined by California law—instead he was convicted of sexual assault.Currently, the federal definition states that if there’s penetration “with any object, any body part, that’s not consensual, then that’s rape,” Rennison said. “Brock Turner was convicted of a penetration offense and under these definitions that’s rape.”Rennison also points out that critics may not have read the entire section of the book and missed some key context.“That particular section is about how definitions change over time,” Rennison said.In fact, California did alter their definition of rape, in part due to Turner's case.She says they will still add even more context in upcoming editions of the book, a fact the publisher confirmed, as well.She contends that the reason Turner’s image was used in the first place was to keep the curriculum current and thus relatable to students in 2017.“This is who students know and students talk about,” she said. “Contemporary references are a must. Looking at older books students aren’t engaged. They don’t think it applies to them in their world.”She also hopes it starts a larger conversation about punishment. A man is dead after falling off a ladder while cutting a tree branch following Hurricane Irma.Hillsborough County, Florida Fire Rescue responded to Puritan Road in Tampa, at approximately 2:54 p.m. on Thursday, after receiving a call about a person down.Upon arrival, firefighters found 60-year-old John Knight on the ground.According to a witness, Knight was cutting a tree branch when it hit him and knocked him off his ladder, causing him to fall between 20 to 25 feet.Firefighters pronounced Knight dead at the scene. 559
