(KGTV) - A historic letter sent from perhaps history's most famous ship by a passenger bound for San Diego is hitting the auction block.A letter from a survivor aboard the Titanic was recently listed by the English auction house Henry Aldridge and Son. (CNN) -- Maui residents who evacuated their homes because of a wildfire are allowed to return, the County of Maui announced Friday on Facebook.But Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino cautioned that, "This fire is still an active threat to our community, and residents are urged to remain vigilant of changing conditions," in the same post.Firefighters will continue to monitor the blaze that has consumed an estimated 10,000 acres of fallow former sugar cane and dry brush, according the county.The fire was reported Thursday morning at 10:42 a.m. local time near the intersection of Waiko Road and Kuihelani Highway.The County of Maui activated its Emergency Operations Center in the morning. By afternoon, the flames were burning out of control and emergency officials sent a mobile alert warning nearby residents to evacuate.More than 600 people fled as the blaze scorched 3,000 acres, the mayor's office said. The Maui Humane Society moved its animals in crates and kennels to a nearby high school.Helicopters were grounded after sunset, and they are expected to return to making air drops after sunrise, according to a news release from the county.Oprah Winfrey has a home in the county, and tweeted a local resident to confirm that she's given officials fighting the fire access to her private road. "A big mahalo to Oprah for giving Maui County access to your private road for use to assist in the Maui fire," Hawaii Gov. David Ige tweeted.Flights at Kahului Airport were briefly diverted, but operations have returned to normal. The fire affected access to the airport, which was operating on emergency generators. (CNN) -- Nike's gamble to partner with athlete-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick paid off Sunday as the company won an Emmy for outstanding commercial at the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards.The commercial, titled "Dream Crazy," features Kaepernick alongside other sports legends including Serena Williams and LeBron James, who have reached beyond their personal achievements to support and advance political and social causes.The ad was released in September 2018 days before the start of the NFL season. (KGTV) — As demonstrations around the country call for police reforms, demands for cities to "defund the police" have increased.But what does that really mean? Is it a reduction in funding or eliminating departments? So far, the calls have included both."There are some advocates who would like to see a police-free environment in a lot of cities," Scripps National Political Editor Joe St. George tells 10News' Jon Horn. "Now for some people that is a terrifying thought. Police help prevent theft, they prevent violent crime. So it is something that is certainly going to be a hotly contested political issue."RELATED: San Diego City Council approves budget, adds Office on Race & EquitySt. George added that both Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden have both said they do not support calls to "defund the police," so the issue may fall on local cities.Policy proposals are still in the early stages. Supporters of the movement say they'd like to see less patrolling and reaction to major needs. But critics say patrolling helps prevent crimes from happening.If budget reductions are in the mix, depending on the amount, departments can either expect layoffs or a shift in priorities, according to St. George."If you're talking millions of dollars worth of cuts to a police department, there will have to be layoffs. If you're talking a couple hundred thousand, perhaps they would shift priorities from one program to another," St. George says.In San Diego, locals voiced their calls for decreasing the police department's budget for the 2021 fiscal year. City leaders voted Monday to approve the budget, which will increase SDPD's budget to 6 million.In contrast, Minneapolis' City Council has voiced intentions to disband the local department, calling their current department unreformable. "Right now, we don't have that because over half of our budgets, the discretionary funds go to law enforcement and policing."One thing that is likely, whether it be budget or policy changes, is that no two cities can expect to see the same response."Every city is going to be different.
