SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than a dozen migrants were apprehended after 150 migrants tried to climb the border fence in San Diego, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The incident happened New Year’s Eve at an unspecified time. According to the agency, 45 migrants turned back due to CBP’s increased presence at the border before another group of migrants started throwing rocks at agents. Border Patrol agents added that the group tried to lift toddler-sized children over the concertina wire, but agents were unable to help the children because too many rocks were being thrown. Agents used pepper spray upwind and tear gas of the migrants to try and deter them from throwing rocks. CBP says the measures weren’t aimed at the migrants and “successfully suppressed the rock throwers causing them to flee the area.”Most of the migrants returned to Mexico through a hole under the fence and by climbing back over the fence. A total of 25 migrants were apprehended. Under CHP’s use of force policy, the incident is being reviewed. The incident comes on the heels of another recent event at the border in which hundreds of migrants tried to rush the border, forcing the hours-long closure of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The Padres' hole at third remained, and there was Machado, still waiting for the right fit on the free agent market.Finally, don't discount general manager A.J. Preller's powers of persuasion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New technology is offering schools another weapon in the battle against vaping and e-cigarettes.At this week's National Conference on Education, Soter Technologies is promoting its FlySense machine. It's similar to a smoke detector but tuned to sense vaping byproducts in the air."We can determine if a flavor is in the air, if THC is in the air, or if nicotine is in the air," says CEO Derek Peterson. "The device can determine what's in the air, whether someone's using a jewel pen, vaping, or an old fashioned e-cigarette, or a regular cigarette."The device then sends an alert to cell phones of nearby teachers and administrators so they can respond. Peterson says they've already sold 7,000 FlySense devices around the country, including 1,000 in California.It's helping schools fight a growing epidemic. A recent study in the Journal of American Medicine says 5.3 million teenagers admit to using e-cigarettes. The CDC says they're harmful to kids and adults and can be addictive."Kids get hooked on the vaping pens because of the nicotine content," says Peterson. "They think it's cool. And then before you know it, they're trapped. They're hooked on the nicotine. They can't get off."In addition to the FlySense machine, Peterson's company gives schools an educational curriculum to teach the dangers of nicotine and vaping. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a driver who reportedly hit two people crossing the street in East Village before running away. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 300 block of 14th Street around 12:20 a.m. Sunday. Police say a 24-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were crossing 14th street in an unmarked crosswalk when the driver of a Ford Mustang attempted to make a U-turn, lost control and hit the pair. The crash left the woman pinned against the wall with a fractured hip and the man with abrasions, according to police. The driver ran away from the scene on foot and has yet to be located, police say. 658
