SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Metropolitan Transit System is increasing bus and trolley services as the economy continues to reopen.MTS will increase weekday midday service on the UC San Diego Blue Line beginning Monday, June 15, followed by service increases on dozens of bus routes in late June."As we continue the regional reopening of our economy, we know more people will need the services that MTS provides. We want people to know that San Diego's transit system will continue to be a safe and reliable option as possible," said MTS Board Chair Nathan Fletcher. "We've strengthened our already-enhanced sanitizing protocols on vehicles and at stations and implemented policies to better protect our passengers and employees. We are now increasing service to help reliability and allow for greater physical distancing of passengers."Beginning Monday, the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley -- which connects the San Ysidro international border to downtown San Diego -- will increase its service frequency to every 7 1/2 minutes from 4:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., and keep 15-minute frequencies until 9 p.m., followed by every 30 minutes until the end of the service day.Weekday ridership on the Blue Line plummeted 69% between February 24 and April 20, from 63,715 daily riders to just 19,787. Since April 20, average weekday ridership has increased 28%, topping out at 25,367 the week of June 1. More frequency will give more opportunity for passengers to practice social distancing on board and on platforms when possible. Service on the Orange Line and Sycuan Green Line will remain unchanged.While trolley service will first be increasing to closely mirror pre- COVID-19 levels, MTS is also making preparations to increase bus service in the coming weeks. Schedules and routes are being finalized. The goal is to provide service increases that meet market demands. MTS reduced weekday service levels approximately 25% on April 13 to address record-low ridership while still providing critical service for essential workers and trips.In addition to service increases, MTS says it also continues to improve its already-strict safety and sanitizing protocols. The latest development on that front is retrofitting buses with germ barriers to better protect bus operators. Barriers will also allow the agency to return to front- door boarding, which gives passengers more room in which to spread out. MTS has only allowed rear-door boarding since April 1 to protect the health of bus operators.MTS continues to operate about 95 bus routes and three trolley lines. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Horses of Tir Na Nog equine sanctuary east of Alpine is inviting members of the public to join its monthly giving campaign and become a "Hay Hero."Donations support sanctuary operating expenses, including feed costs that exceed ,000 per year.The volunteer-driven nonprofit partners with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services to care for horses rescued from abuse, neglect or abandonment."By making a monthly pledge, our Hay Heroes are helping us meet our most basic commitment to provide our horses with a high-quality diet," Administrator Amy Pat Rigney said. "Hay Heroes can choose the amount of their monthly commitment. When feeding 58 equines, no gift is too small. Everything helps." The sanctuary is a nonriding facility, though the community is invited to meet some of the horses under care. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol arrested 58 people for alleged intoxicated driving in San Diego County during its annual Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period this year.CHP officers made the arrests between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Sunday in the agency's jurisdiction in the county, which includes all freeways, as well as roads in unincorporated areas.All available officers were to be deployed to catch drunk or drug- impaired drivers, speeders and other traffic violators during the enforcement period.Last year, 66 people were arrested for impaired driving in San Diego County over the Thanksgiving holiday.Statewide, the agency made 855 arrests for impaired driving during the enforcement period, down from 965 last year. And 44 traffic fatalities were reported across all California jurisdictions -- two of which were in San Diego County. Last year, California saw the exact same number of traffic deaths during Thanksgiving enforcement. 972

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded local property owners today to pay property taxes on time or face a hefty penalty. The first installment of the 2018-2019 secured property tax bill was due on Nov. 1 and will become delinquent after Dec. 10. ``So far, we have had 41 percent of taxpayers send us .3 billion in first installment payments,'' McAllister said. ``But we're coming up on the deadline, and we don't want anyone to have to pay a 10 percent penalty for being even a minute late.'' Online payments will be accepted until midnight on Dec. 10. Taxpayers should log on to sdtcc.com early and give themselves plenty of time to complete an e-check payment before the automatic midnight cutoff, according to McAllister. Payments can also be made by phone at (855) 829-3773; in person by visiting any of the five branch offices; or by mail, in which case payments must be postmarked Dec. 10 to be considered on time. The Treasurer-Tax Collector's office expects to collect .49 billion in property taxes from the nearly one million bills it sent to county residents in September. During fiscal year 2017-18, the county used 45.6 percent of the nearly billion collected to fund local schools and 13.2 percent on county services. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Ralphs Grocery Co. has agreed to pay ,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit alleging a courtesy clerk at its Point Loma store was denied a request to change her work schedule to accommodate her pregnancy, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Wednesday.The agency's lawsuit alleged the Ralphs store in question denied the employee's request to change her schedule, in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, and she was forced to quit as a result."The EEOC applauds Ralphs for agreeing to meaningful measures to protect pregnant employees in the workplace," said Anna Park, regional attorney for the EEOC's Los Angeles District, whose jurisdiction includes San Diego County. "Frontline managers and supervisors must be educated on their obligation to properly handle accommodation requests for pregnancy-related medical conditions."In addition to the monetary relief, Ralphs has agreed to review and revise its policies and procedures on discrimination and provide training to employees and managers on federal anti-discrimination laws, with an emphasis on pregnancy discrimination and handling employees' accommodation requests for pregnancy-related medical conditions, according to the EEOC.Patricia Kane, acting director of the EEOC's San Diego's local office, said, "With the proper policies and procedures in place, employers can reasonably accommodate a pregnant employee.
