BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China.     In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible.     Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco.     Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said.     CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said.     "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said.     Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said.     CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way."     But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.     "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said.     With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.

GUANGZHOU/NANJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The first cross-Strait weekend chartered flight from China's mainland to Taiwan took off at 6:31 a.m. from Guangzhou, capital city of the southern Guangdong Province early Friday morning.     More than 100 mainland tourists aboard the Airbus A330 became the first group of people on a sight-seeing tour allowed to Taiwan amid warming cross-Strait ties. The flight has 258 passengers.     The historic flight by China Southern Airlines (CSA) is scheduled to land at Taipei Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan at 8:10 a.m. after a 1,124-km journey.     "I have been expecting to visit Taiwan, the Treasure Island, and my dream will finally come true today," mainland tourist Shi Anwei told Xinhua before boarding the plane. "I was too excited to sleep last night."     Following suit was a flight from Xiamen of eastern Fujian Province that took off at 7:16 a.m. The flight, MF881 by the Xiamen Airlines with 203 passengers, is expected to arrive at the Songshan Airport of Taipei at 8:51 a.m.     Each passenger witnessing the historical moment received a gift package from the airlines, which enclosed a model plane and map of Taiwan.     At a separate ceremony in East China's Nanjing City marking thecity as the fifth new city to conduct the cross-Strait chartered flight, Zheng Lizhong, mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) Executive Vice Chairman, said the start of the weekend chartered flight and beginning of the mainland tourists' visit to Taiwan "is destined to open a new chapter in the cross-Straits cultural and economic communications."     A high-ranking mainland aviation official said that since Shanghai was chosen as the first city for cross-Strait flight operation five years ago, "there has been a small step each year, but they have amounted to a major step in the past five years."     "The ever more frequent and convenient flights across the Straits are not only improved means of transportation, they are also an emotional and cultural bridge for the people, and changed the way of thinking of both sides," the official said.     However, he said, real direct flight hadn't been realized yet as all of the planes flew to Taipei by way of Hong Kong.     Quoting Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great pioneer of Chinese democratic revolution, the official said, "the real success is still in front and we need to work harder."     The first chartered flight from Nanjing started at 8:05 a.m.     Some 760 Chinese mainland tourists from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xiamen and Guangzhou started the first weekend charter flight to Taiwan on Friday, three weeks after the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation met last month.

BEIJING, May 22 -- The State Council yesterday ordered government departments to cut spending by 5 percent this year to free up money for quake reconstruction.    The money will help to finance a 70 billion yuan (10 billion U.S. dollars) fund for rebuilding after the May 12 quake, which killed tens of thousands, the Cabinet said on its website. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao speaks on the quake relief work during a meeting of the State Council, in Beijing, capital of China, May 21, 2008.The death toll from the quake rose to 41,353 by noon yesterday, and 274,683 were injured, according to the Information Office of the State Council. The number of missing has been put at 32,666.     The overall impact of the quake on China's fast-growing economy is expected to be limited. Sichuan is a major source of coal, natural gas and some farm goods but has little industry.     The quake destroyed thousands of buildings, knocked out power and phone services and damaged factories, mines and other facilities. State-owned and private companies suffered 67 billion yuan (9.5 billion U.S. dollars) in quake losses, according to the government's preliminary estimates.     Yesterday's Cabinet statement gave no details of how much money the spending cuts were expected to raise. But the reported budget for the central government this year, including the military, is 1.3 trillion yuan (187 billion U.S. dollars) - and 5 percent of that would be 65 billion yuan (9.3 billion U.S. dollars).     Beijing will set a moratorium on new government building projects, Premier Wen Jiabao told a State Council meeting.     Wen said the quake "added uncertainties" to the economy but he said it was stable and its fundamentals were not affected, Xinhua reported.     Donations to quake-hit regions reached 16 billion yuan (2.29 billion U.S. dollars), of which 1.76 billion yuan (250 million U.S. dollars) has been forwarded to affected areas, according to the information office.     In addition, the Ministry of Finance announced yesterday that it has allocated another 660 million yuan (94.83 million U.S. dollars) in relief funds to quake-stricken areas.     As the summer draws near, the quake-hit regions are facing mounting pressure to prevent epidemics.     About 45,000 medical workers are working in all quake-hit counties and townships in Sichuan, according to the Ministry of Health.     About 1,196 tons of disinfectants and bactericides were distributed, the ministry said in a statement.     In seven out of the 11 worst-hit counties, sanitation work has been completed and in the other four, one-third of the townships have been covered.     According to local health departments, doctors found 58 cases of gas gangrene, a bacterial infection that produces gas within gangrenous tissues, as of Sunday.     But officials said the virus does not affect people without open wounds.     Meanwhile, rescuers are still fighting time to find survivors.     According to the Department of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, rescuers saved and evacuated 396,811 people to safe places as of yesterday noon.     A total of 6,452 have been dug out alive from the rubble, with 77 rescued in the 36 hours to noon yesterday.     The Ministry of Health said that 3,424 people injured in the quake had died in hospitals.     Hospitals have taken in 59,394 injured people since the quake, of whom 30,289 were discharged, the ministry said.     Power has been restored in most parts of quake-hit areas but Beichuan County, one of the worst hit, remained blacked out and electricity in Hongyuan was cut off again due to aftershocks, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission said in a statement.     Experts yesterday said there was no need to worry that the 33 lakes in Sichuan - formed after landslides blocked rivers - would burst their banks.     "Generally speaking, those lakes are safe because the flood season is yet to come," said Liu Ning, general engineer of the Ministry of Water Resources.     "We are monitoring the lakes round the clock," he added.

Asahi Breweries Ltd., Japan's largest beer producer, is targeting the Chinese milk products market with an all-around manner with its new milk factory being under construction in China's Shandong Province, company officials told Xinhua Saturday.     A milk company, which has been building the factory, was established in Laiyang city, Shandong Province, in April. It's the first time for a large-scale Japanese corporation to enter the Chinese integrated milk business in the fields of both production and sales.     The company is owned 90 percent by Asahi. Business of the new company will involve the entire process from raising cows to marketing, while products will be sold to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao under Asahi's proprietary label, according to Asahi Breweries officials.     Price of the Asahi milk products will be about 50 percent to 100 percent higher than average local milk, and sales in the first year will be targeted at 1 ton per day, they said. (Www.hxen.com)    The products will be launched onto the market prior to Aug. 8, the opening day of the Beijing Olympics, they added.
