OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A 7-Eleven employee waiting for his shift to start jumped into action Wednesday when three employees of a Church’s Chicken were shot in south San Diego County. David Walker, who had been inside the Otay Mesa West restaurant just an hour earlier, was sitting in his car when he heard the gunfire that killed a woman and injured two men. “It sounded like firecrackers and that’s what I thought it was at first, at first two, then it kept going,” Walker said. “It went two, pow pow! And it stopped, then it went again. That’s when I realized something was wrong.” The scene became chaotic as people in the drive-thru sped away from the area while others started shouting and running back inside. RELATED: One dead, two more shot at Church’s Chicken in Otay Mesa WestWalker saw the shooter leave the Church’s Chicken. “He was just booking it; he was out that door as fast as he could get out it.” Walker then focused on a disturbing sight: one of the male employees fell out of the back door, bleeding. “So my concentration went to him and I took my belt off, wrapped it around his arm. He had another hole in him, I tried to plug that until police got here.” While he was giving medical aid, Walker talked with the man, who he described as a South Bay resident in his 50s with three children. “Just telling him - calm his breathing, talk to me about his family, tell me about his kids just to calm his breathing down; he was going to black out a couple times.” Walker believes the man was shot twice, in the arm and armpit. He was able to use skills he learned from his sister and ex-partner, both nurses. “He was bleeding so bad, I just had to do what I had to do.” The victim was able to tell Walker the shooter was a man he had seen around the neighborhood. “I’m from this neighborhood; I’m not really surprised that something like this happened. I’ve only worked here for two and a half months but I’ve been here my whole life,” Walker said. San Diego Police said the man was in stable condition about two hours after the shooting. “If he lived, you know I’m happy. I did what I could do to help somebody,” Walker said. 2155

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A handful of parents are fuming over a sex ed course being taught in their children’s school and the religious group that's teaching it.Mona Mangat, the mom of an 8th-grader at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Pinellas County, Florida, said she and other parents are “angry about this, upset about this and trying to figure out how this is possible.”Mangat knew one thing for sure: Her daughter would opt out of a sex ed course being taught Thursday by the Christian faith-based group More2Life.“It’s shocking when you find out that faith-based groups are providing this information in schools. I had no idea. I thought that was not allowed in the United States, but I guess I was wrong," she explained.Mangat said she worries the curriculum is biased especially since the group is linked to a pro-life crisis pregnancy center in Largo called New Life Solutions. The More2Life group focuses on abstinence in their presentation to schools.In one presentation they told students, “Sex is like fire. It's safe in its proper context like a committed marriage, just like it's safe in a fireplace.”In another, while speaking about the high rate of STDs, a leader told students, "Have you ever played duck, duck, goose? Now it's like duck, duck, chlamydia." Scripps station WFTS in Tampa took parents' concerns straight to Jason Dorr, the director of More2Life, who said their program does not discuss religion."Our message is completely a health message,” Dorr explained.Dorr added, in line with Florida rules, they encourage abstaining from sex before marriage. The organization has spent 19 years talking to students about the consequences of STDs and teen pregnancy. “We always make this clear: We are not here to tell you what to do. This is an option for your life and we want to present that to you so you can make your own choices," Dorr added. “We are teaching them to have a healthy life and reach their goals without the consequences that can affect their future, so it's adding to what they're already learning at home.”Dorr also said 95 percent of teachers give them high ratings and highly recommend their program to other classrooms.Mangat is fighting to get the program out of schools and swapped out for one that focuses purely on facts.“The choice to have sex is intensely personal. You have to have complete information to make that decision," Mangat added.The Pinellas County School district said students are able to opt out of the presentations. Parents might be anxious and apprehensive for back to school, but so many kids are ready.“The next month might be the longest month we’ve had waiting for school to come back,” said Carrie Rea, laughing.Rea is a mother of four in Akron — two kids at St. Vincent-St. Mary, two at St. Sebastian.They are in ninth grade, sixth grade, fourth grade, and first grade. Her hands are full — but her thinking is straightforward as back-to-school begins.“Make sure we’re flexible so that our kids are flexible because we are going to be the dictators of how our kids feel,” Rea said. “Even if we feel a certain way, that we just roll with the punches and don’t let our kids sense our own frustration because they need to learn.”One thing that might frustrate parents is school supply shopping — so different this year than ever before."The number one thing you’re going to need this year are masks, right?” said Rachel Krych, who runs the blog “Couponing with Rachel.”She said every store has masks readily available now, at all price points.From bulk buys on Amazon to mix and match at Old Navy.“Also your neighbor down the street probably makes homemade masks so I think masks in general, you’ll be able to find a lot of,” Krych said.She also says to look for what are called “loss leaders” to save some cash on common things on the supply list.“Loss leaders are a drastically reduced item that you can buy every week at every store and they’re usually about 5 to 10 of these,” Krych said. “For instance, like 25 cent crayons or a five-pack of glue sticks.”If you have your list and shop those loss leaders specifically over the next three or four weeks, you’ll be able to stock up at better prices.As for where to buy — Krych said the big names have the best deals — Target, Walmart, Meijer’s, Marc’s, Staples, even Aldis.You might also need to add a sturdy backpack to the list since Krych said she’s seen some schools implementing “no-locker” rules.For Carrie and her kids, back to school also means practicing things that aren’t on the syllabus.Constant hand washing at home so they’re ready in class, trying on different masks to make sure they fit and are comfortable, and even rethinking what we’ve always been taught — sharing is caring.“We had to parent in a totally different way and say ‘You’re not being mean - but for the time being, you have to keep whatever you have It’s yours and you have to keep it to yourself.’” Rea explained. “Still be polite and mannerly to everyone around you, but understand you can’t share.”And when it comes to things like disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer, several districts in Northeast Ohio tell News 5 they hope parents can contribute but understand if they can’t. Police are investigating after an underage girl was reportedly touched inappropriately at a Southwest Key facility in Phoenix. According to the Phoenix Police Department, 32-year-old Fernando Magaz Negrete, who works at the facility was seen by a juvenile witness touching a 14-year-old victim inappropriately on June 27.Court documents say a 16-year-old saw Negrete touching her roommate in their bedroom in June.The witness says she allegedly saw Negrete touching the girl's genitals and kissing her, court documents said. Additionally, Negrete was seen on surveillance video entering the girl's bedroom several times throughout the night.Negrete was contacted by police on Tuesday and made statements regarding his involvement. He was booked into jail on charges of molestation, sexual abuse, and aggravated assault. Arizona Representative Ruben Gallego?wrote a letter on Wednesday, asking for the Department of Health and Human Services' Inspector General to do an investigation of widespread reports of sexual abuse involving migrant children in federal custody. He also asked about their policies and whether they're following childcare regulations.The incidents include physical and sexual abuse suffered by a 6-year-old girl at a Southwest Key facility in Glendale, according to Gallego's office. Tucson police have also investigated multiple molestations at local Southwest Key locations. According to police reports obtained from ProPublica, police investigated molestation claims dating to 2014.Around the country, migrant children have reported abuse, neglect and assault at immigrant detention facilities. The Phoenix Southwest Key facility where Negrete worked is the same location First Lady Melania Trump visited in June.Southwest Key spokesperson Jeff Eller released the following statement on Wednesday: “When a child tells us of inappropriate behavior, we immediately call law enforcement and start an internal investigation as appropriate. That’s what happened in this case. Southwest Key always works with law enforcement to bring the full force of the law to bear when it is warranted.” 2211
