BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator said Wednesday that China will promote social exchanges with Myanmar to boost bilateral ties.     "We attach importance to and support friendly exchanges and cooperation between social groups and organizations in China and Myanmar, which will contribute to the development of bilateral ties," said Zhou Tienong, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, in a meeting with a delegation from a government-supported organization from Myanmar.     Zhou, also president of the Chinese Association for International Understanding, briefed the eight-member delegation on China's political and economic situation, its measures in tackling the global downturn and pledged to boost economic and trade cooperation with the international community, including Myanmar. BUDAPEST, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai has expressed optimism in having a better future in ties with China upon the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Bajnai described China as a reliable international partner in a recent interview with Xinhua, saying that Hungary was one of the first to establish diplomatic ties with the fledgling country.     Having visited China in November 2008, he said he has been deeply impressed with the country's dynamic development.     "The high-standard professional exchange of views with Chinese negotiation partners in the central and local governments and withbusiness leaders have already yielded concrete results in the Hungarian-Chinese economic relations, to the benefit of both countries," said the prime minister.     He welcomed the forthcoming visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, saying the visit will offer an opportunity for the two sides to talk about "further significant advances in bilateral economic cooperation."     The past decade has witnessed a 17-fold rise in trade between Hungary and China, he said, adding that there had also been extensive growth in their cultural, educational, scientific and tourism cooperation.     Noting that China is one of Hungary's most significant Asian trade partners and Hungary one of China's most prominent in central and eastern Europe, Bajnai said further improvement of the relations with China has been a priority of the Hungarian foreign policy.     "Mutual investment and technological cooperation are important not only because they are profitable for businesses of both countries, but also because in hard economic times they create jobs, " he said.     He noted that China has been doing a splendid job in facing up to the challenges of the world economic depression. Hungary also did everything in its power to alleviate its impact, he said.     Both countries should "take full advantage of their cooperation in continuing to combat the crisis," he said.     Referring to the 60 years China has gone through, Bajnai said China's development, especially in the past three decades, has set an example for the world.     "My personal opinion is that China's greatest achievement has been its huge economic advances, which made it possible to significantly raise the living standards of the 1.3 billion Chinese people," he said.

PHUKET, Thailand, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States need to maintain high-level contact and deepen cooperation in various areas of common concern, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Wednesday in his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.     Yang said the two countries should also keep close communication and collaboration on global issues and properly handle disputes and sensitive issues in order to push forward bilateral ties. Clinton and U.S. Treasure Secretary Timothy Geithner will be joined for the dialogue by their respective Chinese Co-Chairs, State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vice Premier Wang Qishan.     The dialogue will focus on addressing the challenges and opportunities that both countries face on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global areas of immediate and long-term strategic and economic interests.     On Wednesday, Yang also met with his counterparts from Russia, South Korea and Pakistan. 

XIAMEN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- China remains the most attractive country for foreign capital, despite that the country's foreign direct investment declined for ten straight months, a commerce official said Wednesday.     "China has been the top destination for foreign capital for 17 consecutive years," Wang Chao, assistant commerce minister, said at the World Capital Forum in Xiamen, east China's Fujian Province.     A report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on July 22 showed that China stands first on the list of five most attractive destinations for foreign capital, followed by the United States, India, Brazil, and Russia.     The country has received 48.3 billion U.S. dollars of foreign direct investment (FDI) from January to July this year, down 20.3 percent over the same time last year amid a global economic downturn, Wang said.     Wang said the country's prospects for overseas investment remains optimistic as it would simplify examination and approval procedures toward foreign investors.     It will also guide foreign investment to go to high technology industry, advanced manufacturing industry, energy saving and environment protection industries, in a bid to optimize investment structures.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese ambassador to Brazil Chen Duqing said Saturday China may play a significant role in Riode Janeiro's preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.     "Compared with the other applicants, currently Rio de Janeiro still has a lot to do to improve its sports facilities and other infrastructure, which indicates a special opportunity for Chinese companies," Chen told Xinhua Saturday in an exclusive interview.     The costs of preparing for the event in 2016 are estimated at roughly 12 billion U.S. dollars. However, the event is expected to generate 250 billion.     Zhou Zhiwei, an expert in Brazil studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that for Rio de Janeiro, traffic and infrastructure are the city's weak points.     Beating rivals Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid, Rio de Janeiro won the right to host the world's largest stage of sporting events after three failed attempts.     Rio de Janeiro's win also marks the first time that an Olympic Games will be held in South America.     Chen said as big third world countries, both China and Brazil have cooperated closely in applying for host cities, making preparations and organizing the Games in the past few years.     In 2007, China's General Administration of Sports sent teams to Brazil to draw experiences from the Pan American Games. During last year's Beijing Olympics, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Rio de Janeiro bid team came to China to watch the games.     Besides the Games, Rio de Janeiro, along with another seven cities, was also expected to host the 2014 World Cup, which required large investments in infrastructures in terms of sports facilities, transportation and reception, Chen said.     "Just like their Beijing friends, I believe people in Rio de Janeiro will also enjoy rich benefits brought along by the Olympic Games," he added.
