A new trade agreement to manage that trade kicks in this week. “You know, we were doing anywhere between 30 and 30 plus billion dollars worth of cross border trade here in the last five, six, seven years, I think that that number is only poised to increase," Jaime Chamberlain told KGUN. Chamberlain owns Chamberlain Distributing, a packing house that brings tons of produce from Mexico and he chairs the port authority for Santa Cruz County, Arizona. The USMCA, the US, Mexico, Canada Agreement that officially kicks in this week replaces NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement and does things like modernizing record keeping for the digital age.Chamberlain says cross border trade does not mean U.S. jobs going to Mexico. He says, It’s a two-way highway that helps both sides.“There's a tremendous amount of American products going into Mexico. In fact, the majority of the raw products going into make a lot of the products coming out of Mexico especially out of the Maquila industry are American based companies that are supplying that raw product into Mexico.”Josh Rubin’s company Javid LLC/Javid De Mexico operates many of those Maquilas--factories U.S. companies operate in Mexico. He says, “I represent 27 different facilities over 3500 employees here in Nogales, Mexico, for our customers.”Customs charges are based on where a product is made. Rubin says one of the challenges under USMCA is defining country of origins when the parts come from all over the world.He holds up a pen as an example as says, “The metal from the pen might come from one country or from one location, the spring might come from another location, the plastic around the pen might come from somewhere else that he might come from somewhere else.”Rubin says some companies may feel they’re better off just paying ordinary customs duties and avoid record keeping and other requirements of USMCA, especially if they make small items that result in small customs fees.There is an element of wait and see for some companies especially as US Customs and Border Protection works out exactly how it will enforce the new trade rules.This story originally reported by Craig Smith on KGUN9.com. 2263

BOWIE, Maryland — Some students at Bowie High School in Prince George's County may face charges for a senior prank they pulled at the school last week.About 20 seniors stormed the school's hallways, taking part in what was meant to look like a school shooting.The seniors used fireworks and water guns and were wearing black masks, according to a letter from the school.The school was evacuated.One student was burned by the fireworks and also treated for an asthma attack.The father of that student was shocked to learn what had happened."I don't know what had to go through somebody's mind to pull of a prank like this in this day and age, so close to Parkland and two days later they had a shooting today down in Texas," said Steve Birckhead, father of the injured student. "These kids just weren't thinking."School officials say the students who participated in the prank will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. 952

BOULEVARD, Calif. -- Crews are investigating what caused a fire to erupt at a school in Boulevard Monday afternoon.The fire happened at Clover Flat Elementary School in boulevard around 3 p.m., according to Cal Fire. It took firefighters less than an hour to extinguish the flames. The fire completely destroyed the classroom. The fire damaged several outbuildings on campus. BALTIMORE (KGTV) - A former television producer for “The Jerry Springer Show” was arrested in Maryland Thursday for the death of her sister in Los Angeles.Baltimore Police took Jill Blackstone into custody on suspicion of murder and animal cruelty at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Police did not reveal if Blackstone was a patient.According to Los Angeles Police, Blackstone put her sister Wendy, 49, and two dogs in a garage in Los Angeles and set the building on fire in March 2015. LAPD investigators said Blackstone wanted to make Wendy’s death look like an accident.Blackstone was motivated by the emotional and financial hardship of taking care of her sister, who was deaf and partially blind, investigators said.Baltimore Police said Blackstone will be sent back to Los Angeles to face charges.Blackstone worked as a producer on programs including “Family Court with Judge Penny”, the Daily News reported.The Associated Press contributed to this report. 962

Boeing will cut more jobs as it continues to lose money and revenue during a pandemic that has smothered demand for new airline planes. The company said Wednesday that it expects to cut its workforce to about 130,000 employees by the end of next year, down 30,000 from the start of this year. That is far deeper than the 19,000 reductions that the company announced three months ago."The global pandemic continued to add pressure to our business this quarter, and we're aligning to this new reality by closely managing our liquidity and transforming our enterprise to be sharper, more resilient, and more sustainable for the long term," said Boeing President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun in a news release.Boeing is updating its plans for jobs on the same day it's reporting a 9 million loss for the third quarter, a swing from the .17 billion it earned in the same period last year.
