The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened the highest number of travelers on Sunday since the start of the pandemic as more than a million Americans traveled home following the Thanksgiving holiday.The TSA screened 1.2 million passengers on Sunday, marking its highest total since March 16 — just days after President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address announcing travel restrictions to Europe as COVID-19 began to spread in the U.S. While TSA screening numbers aren't representative of all travel throughout the U.S., the number gives officials an idea of how many people boarded an airplane in the U.S. in a given timeframe.Despite the uptick in travelers, the amount of Americans traveling following Thanksgiving was nowhere near the amount that traveled on the Sunday following Thanksgiving in 2019 — on that day, TSA screen 2.9 million Americans.The uptick in travel comes despite warnings from the CDC against traveling for Thanksgiving amid a spike in COVID-19 cases. Top ranking health officials are urging anyone who traveled to attend a Thanksgiving gathering to get tested for COVID-19 even if they do not have symptoms.On Sunday, Dr. Deborah Birx — a member of the White House coronavirus task force — said anyone who attended a Thanksgiving gathering over the weekend should "assume" they have COVID-19 and take precautions against spreading the virus in the coming weeks.The U.S. has seen more than 4 million people become infected with the virus in November alone — a number that represents 30% of all cases recorded in the country since the pandemic began.Last week, Dr. Anthony Fauci — the U.S.'s leading infectious disease expert — warned that the U.S. could see a "spike superimposed on a spike" in cases in the weeks after Thanksgiving if Americans continued to travel. 1821

The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation now projects that 33,000 American lives would be saved between now and October 1 by near universal wearing of masks.The IHME released the updated model on Wednesday.The IHME’s coronavirus projections have been frequently cited in the past by the White House’s coronavirus task force. The group uses state data along with other metrics to create projections on the number of coronavirus-related deaths throughout the US.The projection state that the US is currently on track to have an additional 58,000 coronavirus-related deaths between now and October 1. But that number drops to just 23,000 if masks are universally worn in public. Those figures are on top of the over 121,000 reported coronavirus-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.The IHME’s model projects that the US death toll will stay consistent on a per-day basis between now and September, before starting to increase in the fall. But the model projects that fewer than 100 Americans will die per day from coronavirus by September if masks are worn.The IHME’s latest model projects that coronavirus-related deaths will continue to surge in the states of Texas, Arizona and Florida in the coming weeks, while leveling or dropping off in many other states.To see a state-by-state breakdown of the IHME’s projections, click here.Last month, a study in the Lancet found that the use of masks and respirators by those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Rebecca Zahau focused Thursday on the thoroughness of the investigation, with the lead Sheriff's detective on the case taking the stand. Zahau's death was ruled a suicide by four different investigative agencies but the Zahau family believes Rebecca was murdered by her boyfriend's brother, Adam Shacknai. The questioning by David Elsberg, attorney for Adam Shacknai, was aimed at showing investigators left no stone unturned. Elsberg's initial focus was on dispelling the scream that a neighbor reported may have come from the Coronado mansion around the time of Rebecca's death.  As Adam Shacknai's attorney pointed at areas of an overhead projection screen of the Coronado mansion, Detective Tsuida said the reported scream actually came from an area northwest of the property, toward the beach, and not from the balcony area where Rebecca Zahau was found dead. The attorney also showed a series of photos of footprints on the balcony, including bare prints that would support Rebecca standing on the balcony and near the balcony's edge. The questioning by Elsberg went on to the collection of potential DNA evidence and the intricate detail work involved.  Detective Tsuida testified that none of Adam Shacknai's DNA was found on the rope or knife, or several other items that might suggest he had anything to do with her death. 1480

The State of Washington will soon have to rehab a lake that is overrun with an invasive species: Goldfish.The fish have filled West Medical Lake, along with Koi, and are crowding out other fish species.Pet owners likely dumped goldfish into the lake, and that may be the source of the problem, says the Division of Fish and Wildlife. Officials say while some believe it's a service to goldfish to release them into a lake, it is a disservice to the ecosystem.Goldfish are a domesticated version of a wild carp from East Asia and were developed due to artificial selection created by humans.Simply put, goldfish are mostly for visual effect.West Medical Lake, near Spokane, Washington, is known as one of the best producing opening day trout lakes in the state, according to the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. It gets stocked with thousands of native trout every year, but that trout is unable to flourish because of the goldfish, which is taking resources such as food and oxygen away. 1016
