SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, July Fourth went off with a bang. San Diego Police said Monday that the department received hundreds of calls regarding illegal fireworks this holiday weekend.Despite canceled fireworks shows throughout the city, the department received 323 calls due to fireworks this year.The figure represents a significant uptick since last year, when the city received only 76 calls about fireworks.Despite the increase in calls, San Diego Police say they aren’t aware of any injuries due to the displays.The report comes after the City of San Diego announced that it would cancel this year’s Big Bay Boom to help halt the spread of COVID-19.According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, all consumer fireworks are illegal in the City of San Diego.That list includes sparklers, firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets, and even poppers.The National Fire Protection Association says that fireworks account for more than half of reported fires in the U.S. on Independence Day. 994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo welcomed a rare bear cub to the mix last week.Zoo officials say an Andean bear cub was born to mom Alba and dad (or, sire) Turbo on Jan. 8 in the early morning hours. “We are overjoyed about the birth of Alba’s first cub,” said Chris Hamlin, animal care manager at San Diego Zoo. “Alba is showing all the appropriate behaviors of a good mother, being very attentive to her newborn. We are so impressed with how well she is handling motherhood.”RELATED: San Diego Zoo Global raises 0K for Australia wildlife reliefZoo caretakers are observing the cub and its mother via closed-circuit video to allow Alba to care for the cub without interruption. Giving the bears their space is critically important, as Andean bear cubs have an extremely high mortality rate in their first month, so care takers are being watchful but cautiously optimistic.
