SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County is working to make it easier for San Diegans to get flu shots, which health officials say is especially important this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.On Thursday, local leaders kicked off efforts to promote flu vaccinations. Over the course of the next few weeks, they will be hosting pop-up clinics across the county where people can get free flu shots.The pop-up clinics are designed for those who don’t have insurance or those who can’t get the vaccine from their health care provider or pharmacy.Valentina Christiansen came to one of the clinics to get flu shots for her family. She said, “I think it’s great because I tried to go through our health plan and that’s over a month out, and we wanted to get it sooner. We heard about the opportunity and we’re excited to be able to do that.”Dr. Denise Foster, chief nursing officer for the county, said getting the flu vaccine can also help in the battle against the coronavirus. Keeping flu patients out of the hospital frees up beds and resources for those fighting COVID-19.“The flu vaccine can prevent the flu and prevent people from seeking health care services that might be needed right now connected to the pandemic,” Foster said.Foster added there are more people that have gotten the flu vaccine this year in comparison to this same time last year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan made a push Monday to remind residents that there are still resources for domestic violence victims during the stay-at-home order.Stephan did not have any data to show whether domestic violence cases have started to rise yet. However, she pointed to a case on Sunday where police say a husband killed his wife while their three children were home as an ominous example."The Chula Vista case is a tragic example. One loss of life is one too many for us," said Stephan.RELATED STORY: Chula Vista Police searching for homicide suspect on the runPolice have identified the victim as 35-year-old Natalia Uriarte. Her husband, Francisco Uriarte, fled the scene and remained at large as of Monday afternoon.The DA's office has set up a website that has a list of resources for those afraid of or suffering from domestic violence.Stephan said because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the women's shelters are offering hotel vouchers to reduce potential for the spread of coronavirus.Residents can also call the county's resource hotline at 2-1-1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has been told by state officials it will be placed on California's watch list for coronavirus cases on Friday, after the region reported another record number of cases.San Diego County's COVID-19 cases increased from 103.8 to 112.8 cases per 100,000 residents on Thursday, passing the state's threshold of 100 cases per 100,000 residents. The region's inclusion on the list was fueled by 584 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, a 7% positive rate out of 8,510 reported tests, according to county data. 544
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing 17-year-old boy with several health problems.According to police, Jeremy Jose Sanchez was last seen by his mother at their apartment on Aug. 23 at around 9 p.m. Police did not disclose what part of the city the boy was last seen.The teen suffers from vision damage, loss of hearing, and has active tuberculosis. Police said he takes medications for his conditions, but he left his home without them.Police said Jeremy was reported as a runaway juvenile at risk due to health conditions.The teen is Latino with a tanned complexion, 6 feet 1 inches tall, weighs around 146 pounds, and has brown eyes and black hair.Jeremy was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt, blue jeans, and white, red and black Jordan shoes.Anyone with information on the teen is urged to contact San Diego police at 619-531-2000 or 911. 902
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego has long been on the leading edge for LGBTQ politics.Christine Kehoe was the first openly gay candidate elected in San Diego County. She won the City Council seat in District 3 in 1993.Since then, the seat has been held continuously by an openly gay person, the longest streak she knows of for any public office in the country.2020 could also be the year San Diegans elect the first openly gay mayor.
