SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For three decades, the Salvation Army has been serving Thanksgiving meals to those in need.This year, it looks a bit different."Just because we have masks and social distancing, their needs haven't changed," said volunteer Elena Misner.Misner says she volunteers on Thanksgiving and Christmas."When I was starting out on my own, the Salvation Army helped me with classes, clothes, services," she said.She says without that initial help, her life might look a lot different."When I got older I found this opportunity," Misner said. "I wanted to give back, so I gave back."In 2020, giving back looks a little different.For the past three decades, the Salvation Army has held large, family-style gatherings inside Golden Hall.But a gathering of that size is not allowed under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.So, a new idea."It's not inside at Golden Hall but outside with meals and kits to-go," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer who was volunteering with meal distribution.Just because it looks a little different doesn't mean the traditional meal needs to change.To-go kits included turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans or corn, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie."It's not just about a meal today, but some of the help and services and support represents the best of our city," Faulconer said.On Thursday, the Salvation Army served meals at four different locations. 1437

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Four rescued sea lion pups and a northern fur seal were released back into the ocean after rehabilitating at SeaWorld.The fur seal was rescued on Mission Beach on Dec. 30, 2019, and the four sea lion pups came into SeaWorld's care over the past two months. All the animals were malnourished and dehydrated, animal care experts said.During their rehabilitation, the animals doubled in weight and were given a clean bill of health by SeaWorld veterinarians. The animals' care givers also made sure the animals could demonstrate they were able to fend for themselves before they were returned to the sea.RELATED: SeaWorld sees high number of sea lion rescuesSeaWorld released the five animals about five miles west of Scripps Pier near La Jolla.Last month, the park released another four sea lions who were under their care back into the ocean.Since the start of 2020, SeaWorld says it has rescued nearly 20 sea lions and seals.SeaWorld told 10News in January that rescuers have seen an unusually large number — about three times the normal amount — of sea lion rescues this winter."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — FBI San Diego says scammers are using a range of methods to steal money and personal data from people, leveraging fears during the coronavirus pandemic to do so.Fake emails from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or government offering information about COVID-19 may only deliver malware to computers to steal info or hold computers ransom, the FBI said. Other websites may also claim the same.The FBI also warned of phishing emails regarding the government stimulus checks many Americans are expecting. The emails could be seeking personal data in order to deliver the stimulus relief, only to steal that data. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Following several years of record-breaking fires around California, the state’s department of insurance is letting residents know they have options if their insurance gets dropped. Under Proposition 103, a law approved by voters in 1988, insurers are required to file rate changes with the California Department of Insurance. Although the department doesn’t set rates, state law requires that insurers’ rates are based on a demonstrated risk of loss. New laws that both took effect in 2019 also offer some protection. One of the laws specifies that homeowners living in a declared wildfire disaster area or adjacent zip codes receive one year of protection from non-renewal. The state also extended protections against non-renewal for people who suffer a total loss during a fire to two automatic renewals or 24 months. If you find yourself in the middle of a non-renewal, the department lists specific rights California residents have: The notice of non-renewal must be sent at least 45 days prior to policy expiration. That notice of non-renewal must contain: (1) the reason or reasons for the non-renewal; (2) the telephone number of the insurer's representatives who handle consumer inquiries or complaints; and (3) a statement indicating that if the consumer has contacted the insurer to discuss the non-renewal and remains unsatisfied, the policyholder may have the matter reviewed by the Department. The insurance company must determine whether to renew or non-renew based upon its underwriting guidelines, which must be objective, have a substantial relationship to the risk of loss, and be applied consistently among insureds in the particular group being non-renewed.For anyone who can’t find insurance, the department has another option. The FAIR plan is available to all homeowners as a last option for coverage. The maximum limit written by the plan on residential property is ,500,000. According to the department, insurance companies use different tools and maps to determine high-risk areas around the state.
