The sun's out, the temperature is just right, and crane flies are buzzing.Those mosquito-looking bugs that bounce around like bumper cars can be seen around town even more this season, after one of the wettest winters San Diego has seen in some time.Crane flies, routinely called "mosquito hawks" and "skeeter eaters," frequent San Diego throughout the year, but are especially active in the spring during breeding.RELATED:How the wild parrots of San Diego arrived in America's Finest CityDoes more rain mean more mosquitoes? No, but San Diego may get 'buggy' this springAnd with a rainy winter comes the likelihood of even more, according to Chris Conlan, San Diego County's supervising vector ecologist."We’ve already had people calling us (Vector Control) about them," Conlan said. "They think they’re big mosquitoes."But they're not. And a couple of the assumptions about the insect also need some clearing up.They aren't mosquitoesCrane flies are harmless to humans, Conlan says. Both crane flies are part of the order Diptera, or "flies," but mosquitoes are a part of family Culicidae. Crane flies are part of the family Tipulidae.And because they're usually caught buzzing around porch lights quickly or around a home even, residents may get scared upon seeing them.“They’re very attracted to lights, so if you have any around openings to your home, it’s very easy for them to get accidentally swept into the house,” Conlan said. “And then they end up freaking you and the cat out!”While they are big for bugs, reaching up to an inch or more in length, their pole-like legs can make them appear even larger.But there's a rule of thumb Conlan advises residents follow: If it looks bigger than a dime, it's too big to be a mosquito.They don't eat mosquitoesAnother big misconception, brought on by their nicknames, is that they eat mosquitoes.Crane flies don't suck blood — most adult flies actually don't eat eat all. If they do eat, they drink nectar. The bug doesn't bite and can't transmit any diseases. And their larvae generally feed off decaying organic matter while living in wet soil.In fact, they're more likely to be eaten by birds, lizards, and other creatures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some long-time roller derby kids are upset after Skateworld management announced their Youth Roller Derby program was cut. Many of these kids were instrumental in the "Save Skateworld" campaign in April. When Skateworld was on the verge of being turned into a big box store, they were there. "We got out of school the day of the City Council meeting," mother, Meadow Beidler said. Armed with their skates and signs, dozens of roller derby kids convinced San Diego City Council to vote to save Skateworld on April 8, 2019. "We really thank the kids for coming out and making their signs," Skateworld general manager, Brett Stang said. His father Gary Stang started the rink in 1975. It has been a Linda Vista institution ever since. Earlier this year, when a developer shared plans to turn Skateworld into a big box store, the derby kids rallied and protested for days.Little did the kids know, that the home they just helped save, would essentially kick them out. Beidler is a proud "Derby Mom" of three fierce girls: "Cheshire Splat," "Hot Sauce," and "Zoom Zoom Kaboom." But now, she doesn't know if she will keep that title. "We don't know if we are going to be able to continue with derby," Beidler said. Days after the city council vote to save their rink, Beidler says her girls were suddenly told that their Youth Derby program would be cut. Management explained it was due to administrative reasons. "The way it went down it was just heartbreaking," Beidler said. The kids were told to join another club instead."We haven't been able to give that derby team the attention it kind of deserves," Brett Stang said. "They've been bumped for private events and other slots, so there is another team out there, 'Derby United,' who offered to take our program under their wing."But Beidler says the problem is that Derby United's new facility in La Mesa has not started construction. She also says Skateworld's prices cannot be beaten. "If we were to continue that and do derby at this new location that hasn't been built yet, then it would cost my family an additional 0 a month," Beidler said. Her girls are now so distraught, they cannot even speak. After all they did for Skateworld, they feel unappreciated. "Having our kids getting excited and politically motivated and going on camera and speaking from the heart how it is family," Beidler said. "They feel very betrayed."Skateworld's management told 10News, although they are closed on Mondays, the kids could have Monday practices if parents and coaches work on an agreement. But hosting home games on the weekends would be tough, considering their free skate schedule. 2663

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police said Wednesday officers detained a woman who reportedly had a shotgun in the parking lot of the department's headquarters.Police said a woman drove into the parking lot just before 12:30 p.m. One department employee saw she was armed with a shotgun, police said.Officers quickly surrounded the woman's vehicle and a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) was on hand to assess and provide support to the woman, SDPD added.Within about 10 minutes, the police said the woman was detained. Several weapons and ammunition were also confiscated, according to the department. 617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego student Emily Benkes says her mother has lived in their Carmel Mountain home for 32 years, never once feeling unsafe in the neighborhood.Tuesday, Benkes came home to a ransacked house. “We had our laptops out, I had some money on my desk, Xbox was gone, my Apple TV,” said Benkes. Benkes believes the person hopped their backyard fence, coming in from a nearby trail. Food was missing from the fridge, including a package of salami which they later found on the trail. The suspect entered the home by throwing a rock through the back window and climbing in. “I felt really violated, I couldn’t even go in my room just because I kept thinking that there was somebody in here going through my stuff,” Benkes.She posted what happened on Nextdoor, and now neighbors are trying to help; one neighbor believes their surveillance video captured someone hopping the fence. “I hope we catch this person and nobody else has this happen to them,” said Benkes. The family estimates several thousand dollars worth of goods were stolen; they have filed a report with the San Diego Police Department. 1122
