TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday reiterated China's pledge to take an "impartial" stand on the sinking of a South Korean warship."The sinking of the warship Cheonan is an unfortunate incident," Wen said during an interview with Japanese public broadcaster NHK. "We have offered condolences to the victims on many occasions."What China has in mind in approaching the incident, in which 46 South Korean sailors died after their warship sank in March, is maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, he said.China attaches importance to the joint investigation conducted by South Korea and other countries and the reactions of various parties, and will take its position on the basis of truth and facts, he added.China appealed for calm on the part of the concerned parties so as to avoid a further escalation of tension and even conflict, he said.The Chinese premier said China understands the current difficult situation President Lee Myung-bak and the South Korean government are facing.China will seek information from various sources and seriously study it before making clear its stand in "a fair and objective manner," he said."We will adopt an impartial position," he said. BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- As the curtain is about to rise on the upcoming second round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), to be held in Beijing on May 24-25, the world's attention will again focus on the Chinese capital.Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said Thursday that in order to achieve positive results from the dialogue, China will strengthen communications, enhance mutual trust and deepen cooperation with the United States.Analysts say this round of talks is of special significance because it signals a new consensus reached by the two sides after overcoming certain obstacles in their relationship.MOVING TOWARDS THE SAME DIRECTIONThe history of Sino-U.S. relations is full of twists and turns, so every step forward and every turn for the better is precious.The second S&ED will be another positive turn for both nations after they overcame a number of complicated problems in their relations.After Barack Obama took over the White House last year, Sino-U.S. relations got off to a good start. Under a consensus reached by President Hu Jintao and Obama in London in April last year, the first S&ED was successfully held in Washington in July of that year and achieved fruitful results.However, from the end of 2009 to the beginning of 2010, Sino-U.S. relations had been seriously interrupted and bilateral cooperation greatly affected by a series of events, including the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and U.S. leaders' meeting with the ** Lama.At that time, many outside observers doubted whether Washington would be able to cease those interruptive actions and pave the way for achieving positive results at the second S&ED.In April, Hu met Obama in Washington while attending the Nuclear Security Summit. CHIFENG, Inner Mongolia, April 10 (Xinhua) -- As a massive drought is plaguing most parts of southwest China, the dry spell is also spreading to many areas of the country's north.More than 250,000 people are short of drinking water in the sparsely populated Chifeng City of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.More than 272,800 cattle also lack drinking water, an official with the municipal water conservancy bureau told Xinhua Saturday.The nine major reservoirs in the city of 90,000 square kiloters in territory just hold 91.75 million cubic meters of water, down 73.7 percent from the same time last year.Adding to the woe, 62 percent of the city's mid- and small-sized reservoirs have dried up, the official said.Major rivers also see a decrease of 77.4 percent in water volume.Even though Chifeng city has suffered from successive years of drought since 1999, this year's has been the gravest in the past decade, the official said.The government has mobilized more than 626,300 people in the drought relief work, with more than 30.33 million yuan (about 4.46 million U.S. dollars) of special-use fund, the official said.
