GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. humanitarian office says needs for assistance have ballooned to unprecedented levels this year because of COVID-19, projecting that a staggering 235 million people will require help in 2021.This comes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and global challenges, including conflicts, forced migration, and the impact of global warming.“The humanitarian system again proved its worth in 2020, delivering food, medicines, shelter, education, and other essentials to tens of millions of people,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a press release. “But the crisis is far from over. Humanitarian aid budgets face dire shortfalls as the impact of the global pandemic continues to worsen. Together, we must mobilize resources and stand in solidarity with people in their darkest hour of need.”The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, expects a 40% increase in the number of people in need of such assistance in 2021 compared to this year.OCHA made the projections in its latest annual Global Humanitarian Overview on Tuesday, saying its hopes to reach 160 million of those people in need will cost billion. Grand Canyon’s entire men’s basketball team has been placed in quarantine after four players and two support staff members tested positive for COVID-19.All 14 players and two student managers are in quarantine at a designated on-campus residence hall for the next two weeks.Players began reporting for voluntary individual workouts last week and were placed in quarantine for 72 hours pending results of coronavirus tests and physicals. Four players who were asymptomatic tested positive at the end of the 72 hours and were placed in quarantine while contact tracing was conducted.Players who tested negative were placed in quarantine as a precaution and will be tested again. The two support staffers who tested positive will remain at home for two weeks. 764

Homeowners in City Heights say the neighborhood isn't keeping up with the cost of living. While home prices are on the rise, development plans have come to a halt. Paul Smith is trying to transform City Heights. "They're still equating it to a high crime area or a place not worth investing in," said Smith. Like everywhere else in San Diego, the cost of living there is going up. "People are taking advantage of a housing shortage right now," said Smith. "So they can demand top dollar for their house. Because someone's willing to pay for it."He's been remodeling his home for the past 18 months. Many of his neighbors are doing the same. "We're seeing numbers in the 0's range now, 0, and I'd say probably five years ago you could buy a house for under 0,000."But, he says businesses in the area aren't adapting to the change. "It's constantly having to go over to North Park to look for services or South Park, outside the community."While some shops are moving in, he says it's simply not enough. "New businesses are seeming to move in, but there isn't a massive influx of investments like you're seeing in North Park and other areas," said Smith. "So we're seeing a lot of vacancies here."Those businesses would help build an even stronger community. "I don't always want to have to leave my neighborhood and to another area just to go get groceries, or go to a restaurant to eat," said Smith. For him, it can't come soon enough. "Change kind of is coming, but more needs to happen."The city did work on a redevelopment project in City Heights several years ago.
