SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The upcoming San Diego Blood Bank blood drive brings to light stories of lives saved by the generosity of others.4-year-old Kamila is one of those people whose life is forever changed by donations.Kamila was diagnosed with beta thalassemia major when she was a newborn. Following the diagnosis, Kamila received her first blood transfusion at the Rady Children’s Hospital when she was two months old.Her mother, Maria Saradpon, described what it felt like to find out her daughter has a blood disorder. “I cried because it’s scary. She’s a little baby getting a blood transfusion.”RELATED: Man gives back after San Diego Blood Bank helped save his lifeShe said all she wanted to was spend time with her baby. “We were trying to figure out this whole thalassemia stuff but also enjoy our baby.”Maria said the reality is, this can happen to anyone. “It’s crazy how you don’t think about how important it is and how many lives are saved and affected by blood donations until you’re the one person affected by it.”Maria said she is forever grateful for those who donate the life-saving blood. “Thank you! Thank you so much for donating blood because it’s keeping my baby girl alive, happy and healthy. For more information or to make a blood donation, click here. 1320

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of local college students scrambled Tuesday to pack up their belongings and make travel arrangements after San Diego State University and the University of San Diego informed students they had roughly 24 hours to vacate their dorms. In a campus-wide email Tuesday, SDSU said students needed to move out by 7 p.m. Wednesday unless they had a hardship.SDSU said it rapidly expedited its move-out plans after seven Bay Area counties instituted shelter-in-place orders to combat the coronavirus. The university said it was “anticipating that more cities will follow.”“Everyone is shocked. This hasn’t really happened before so no one really knows how to deal with it,” said SDSU student Courtney Robinson.Sophomore Samantha Horan added, “People are just scared and they’re trying to get home as quick as they can.”The university said students with health or safety risks, those who could not return home, and students without an alternate residence could remain on campus. Last week, SDSU had encouraged students to consider staying home after spring break. While some students said they anticipated the move-out order, others were caught off guard.“I was planning on staying [during spring break] so I had nothing packed at all,” said student John Magee.Magee was trying to decide which items to pack in his car for the drive to San Jose, and which to leave behind.“If we leave anything, will it be tossed out? Or how will we get it?” he wondered. The university said students could leave non-essential belongings behind “if absolutely necessary.” “However, it cannot be determined at this time when you will be able to collect any left belongings,” SDSU said in a statement. The university said students will receive a credit for any paid rent and unused meal plans.Other local universities had already encouraged their students to leave dorms in the coming days. Point Loma Nazarene encouraged students Monday to return home no later than March 20. UC San Diego told students to vacate no later than March 29. 2044

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday night, the State Board of Education voted to decline the renewal charters for all four Thrive Charter Schools in San Diego. They explain the test scores are too low and keep dropping. The vote technically didn't carry because the board needs six votes to pass any motion. The vote Thursday night was four to two, not all members were present for the vote. If the schools are forced to shut down, nearly 1,000 students would have to look for new schools at the end of the school year. RELATED: Art Institute latest for-profit run school to abruptly closeLindsay Buehler has a third grade daughter at Thrive Charter School in Linda Vista. She tells me this is her daughter's first year, "it's been a Godsend because I was so done with not being able to have LeLe brought up to her potential in the public schools". This school year, Buehler moved her daughter to Thrive and says she doesn't think the state board should shut the schools down solely based on that, "it's mind-blowing because this is going to change so many students lives, not the better, and it’s a shame that it's based on numbers on a paper when you actually see these are future leaders in our community."Meanwhile, some parents have already contacted the San Diego Unified School District to enroll their children for next year. The District Operations Support Officer, Marceline Marques, tells 10News, "in the past 24 hours, we've already placed 60 students throughout the district from Thrive". RELATED: College admissions scandal: San Diego woman sues University of San Diego, other schools over alleged scamThe district tells 10News this isn't the first charter school forced to shut down. In the past three years, three different charter schools have closed.Thrive Charter School's CEO was in meetings all day Friday but they forwarded 10News the email they sent to parents which read in part, "We are not giving up, we believe there are still a number of options that we need to discuss with our legal board and counsel in the coming days". 2052
