SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City leaders are considering closing some streets in the Gaslamp Quarter to help with social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.Pictures on social media showed crowds of people congregating outside bars, many not wearing face coverings, shortly after they reopened Friday.According to a spokesman for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the city's department of special events is reviewing a proposal to shut down parts of Fifth Avenue between G and K streets to make it easier to physically distance by providing more room in parts of the public right of way for outdoor dining.The Gaslamp Quarter Association submitted the application, which would close close the streets Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays. It could be approved and go into effect as soon as this Thursday.Robert Romero owns the Tivoli Bar and Grill. The longtime family-run restaurant on Sixth Avenue reopened Monday. It's the oldest bar in San Diego county."We were open originally in 1881, never have closed in all those years, during the depression, prohibition, World War I, World War Two, until now," said Romero.The owners say they'll be strict about social distancing, face coverings, and increased sanitation protocols."We will have someone at the front door constantly monitoring our customers and making sure they are holding to the restrictions put on us," said Romero.Romero said he noticed many other bars and restaurants were not following the county health orders."It was terrible, when they do that, they're not only reflecting on us, but also putting up the potential for shut down," said Romero.County Health Officials also acknowledged there were problems Friday night after the bars first reopened, but said the city is working to close some streets.California Assemblymember Todd Gloria is also concerned about crowds gathering in the Gaslamp."Part of their reopening is a limited of their capacity, they're operating at a fraction of what they can actually accommodate. Because they were metering the entrance of customers into their businesses, that overflow of customers ends up on the sidewalk," said Assemblymember Gloria.Gloria also thinks closing Fifth Avenue is a good idea."Let's see if there's a way to meet in the middle if you will, these businesses are adhering to the guidelines; the city can certainly help people by closing down the streets, we can be passing out face masks to people who are waiting," said Gloria.Back at Tivoli's, the owners are ready to welcome back customers."Behave, be happy, we love you, they love us and remember, I love it," said Romero, referring to the name Tivoli, spelled backwards. 2648

It found that 45 percent of those polled were "extremely proud" to be American, while 70 percent said they were "proud.""Patriotism isn't something that you can force," said David Povlick, who was visiting downtown San Diego Wednesday. "It's something that people have to feel. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chris Cate may soon feel like the loneliest politician in San Diego.Come December, he'll likely be the only Republican on the otherwise Democratic San Diego City Council. That’s because it appears Democrats will secure an 8-1 advantage on the City Council, based on returns from Tuesday’s election.“We'll have to figure out a new path going into election two years from now and another election two years after that,” Cate said.Cate is a San Diego native who represents the city's North Central areas. The jobs are technically nonpartisan, but divides do show when it comes to key votes on housing development, city contracting, and public safety. Cate says he won't be shy.“And really try to ensure that we as a government are mindful of the fact that we rely on taxpayer dollars to provide those resources, and not try to go back to the well multiple times to increase fees or taxes,” Cate said.Cate describes himself as a fiscal conservative and social moderate. He joined the council in 2014, when Democrats had a 5-4 advantage over Republicans. Democrat registration has exploded since then, with some politicians abandoning the Republican Party.Termed out Councilman Mark Kersey is now an independent, and State Assemblyman Brian Maienschein flipped to a democrat.But Cate says he'll never leave the party.“Absolutely not… 100%, no,” he said.Being the lone Republican on the council could also raise Cate’s political profile. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least three large sharks were spotted off the coast of Torrey Pines State Beach swimming close to surfers in the water on Thursday.California State Parks Lifeguards say they received reports of five sharks swimming about 50 feet from shore and 100 to 200 yards from Lifeguards Tower 1 at about 12 p.m. The sharks were seen specifically gliding around the Flat Rock area, located north of Black's Beach and south of Torrey Pines State Beach, according to a State Parks spokesperson.Sky10 was overhead as the sharks swam nearby surfers who were just offshore of Torrey Pines:Officials say the largest of the sharks, which may have been great white sharks, was about 10 feet in length."The sharks did not interact with any beachgoers during this time. The shark actions are considered non-aggressive and consistent with normal white shark behavior," a State Parks spokesperson said.A San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard made announcements to people in the water about the sighting. Announcements were being made in the area up to one mile south of Bathtub Rock, SDFD spokeswoman Monica Mu?oz said.Shark sighting signs would remain up in the area for 24 hours, officials said. 1198
