Urban Meyer, coach of college football powerhouse Ohio State, said Friday he followed procedure in reporting domestic violence allegations against one of his now-former assistants but failed to properly answer media questions about one reported incident.Meyer, who is on administrative leave, said, "I have always followed proper reporting protocols and procedures when I have learned of an incident involving a student-athlete, coach or member of our staff by elevating the issues to the proper channels.""Please know truth is the ultimate power and I am confident I took appropriate action," he said.At issue is when Meyer knew about domestic violence allegations against Zach Smith made by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. The head coach has acknowledged knowing of a 2009 incident. He told reporters he was unaware of a 2015 allegation until last month, but Friday said he had followed protocol "regarding the Zach Smith incident in 2015."Zach Smith told ESPN in an interview Friday that he and Meyer discussed the incident days after police notified school officials about an investigation. Zach Smith said he met with Meyer before talking to police investigators and told the coach he didn't commit domestic violence.Meyer told him that "if I find out you hit her, you're done," Smith recalled his boss saying.Smith said to ESPN that he told police anything that happened to his then-estranged wife was the result of defending himself. He said he told the coach after the meeting with investigators that he wasn't going to be charged because he didn't do anything wrong. 1579
Vice president-elect Kamala Harris confirmed Thursday that her husband would assume the title of "second gentleman" when she is sworn in next month.Because Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, will be the first man to serve as the spouse of the Vice President, there was some question as to his title. The only people to serve in the role have been women, and all have been referred to as the "second lady."While most media outlets, like the writing-style standard-bearer Associated Press, had already been referring to Emhoff as the second gentlemen, Harris confirmed Emhoff's new title on the record during an interview with CNN on Thursday."I think that the term has evolved into the second gentleman," Harris said.CNN anchor Jake Tapper joked that he preferred the title "second dude," and Harris added that some of Emhoff's friends might be "inclined to call him that."When asked if Harris would call Emhoff the "second gentleman," Harris joked that she would call him "honey."Emhoff, a lawyer, has said he will leave his law practice on Inauguration Day to focus his time in his new role. So far, he's said little about what issues he plans to tackle in his role. 1170
Tucson Police's Operation Division South Motor Squad took a different and non-traditional approach to help raise awareness for safe driving on Thursday.According to the department, mannequins were placed at different intersections around Tucson in an effort to lower collision statistics and urge drivers to pay better attention to their driving and what is around them. The mannequins were dressed like officers and placed in and around police vehicles near intersections that are or have been known for vehicle crashes. This is the first time TPD has utilized this method by using mannequins.Tucson Police said drivers can expect to see the mannequins out again Aug. 21 but the location has yet to be determined. 732

United Airlines said it's suspending a program that transports pets in cargo holds. It will stop accepting new reservations for its PetSafe program, though it will honor any reservations made through March 20, the airline said.Passengers can still carry small pets with them in carry-on luggage. The suspension comes as United reviews its pet transport policies, a process that should be completed by May 1, United said.United has experienced some major pet-traveling disasters recently. Last week, a small dog died after it was put in the overhead bin on a United flight. Then the carrier mistakenly shipped a Kansas-bound dog to Japan, and in a separate incident, it had to divert another flight to Akron, Ohio, after the airline realized a pet had been loaded onto the flight in error.The-CNN-Wire 806
