NAIROBI, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Achim Steiner, UN Under Secretary- General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) told Xinhua in an interview on Friday that China played a significant role in the process leading up to Copenhagen Climate Change Conference."I think China played a very significant role in the process leading up to Copenhagen, and in a sense it became very engaged at the highest international political level in the process," the UNEP chief said.Steiner noted that China took a significant step forward when it made its announcements of voluntary actions a few weeks before Copenhagen. And that sent a very important signal to the negotiations."We saw similar actions taken by Mexico, by South Africa, by Brazil, by Indonesia and also India. That created an opportunity," he said.Steiner admitted that Copenhagen did not deliver what the world had hoped, which was a deal among developed and developing countries to achieve significant agreement in reduction of emissions. However, he maintained that it was also not the failure that some people had attributed to it."I think in history it shall be written as a missed opportunity. We are now focused on moving forward towards Mexico and the world has an opportunity to reach an agreement," he said to Xinhua.On China's situation of environmental protection and carbon emissions reduction, Steiner said the nation has made rapid progress yet challenges still remain.He stressed that China has begun to take a different development path. Chinese leaders and people have started to look at development also from a sense of balance. SHANGHAI, March 23 (Xinhua) -- There has been no timetable for the construction of a maglev line project between Hangzhou and Shanghai, a spokesman of the Shanghai municipal government said Monday.The project is still undergoing feasibility studies, the official said when responding to media reports last week which said the construction is expected to start this year.The proposal of the ultra-high-speed maglev line, with an estimated cost of 22 billion yuan (3.22 billion U.S. dollars), was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2006.When completed, the line is expected to cut the travel time between Shanghai and Hangzhou, capital of the neighboring Zhejiang Province, to half an hour from the current 2.5 hours.

SHANGHAI, Feb. 15 (Xinhua)-- The luxury ocean liner Queen Mary 2 arrived at the Port of Shanghai Monday afternoon, making its first port call in China since its maiden voyage in 2004.The world's reputed cruise carrying about 2,500 passengers and 1,200 crew arrived at the port at 1:30 p.m., and would stay for about 10 hours before leaving for Nagasaki, Japan.Queen Mary 2 was the largest luxury liner which ever made calls at the Port of Shanghai, marking the beginning of a peak of cruise arrivals at the host city of the 2010 World Expo.Shanghai immigration officers had flown to Hong Kong, the previous destination of the cruise, to ensure that all passengers on board could go through necessary customs procedures earlier."So visitors on the ship would have enough time to have a peek of Chinese Lunar New Year's celebration in Shanghai," an immigration official said.Queen Mary 2 is one of the world's largest, longest and most expensive luxury liners, which cost two years and one billion U.S. dollars to build.The ship is 345 meters long, 72 meters high, and 41 meters wide with a cruise speed of 30 knotsThe cruise is owned by the cruise line conglomerate Carnival Corporation.
