SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego's Lamont Smith resigned from his position as head men's basketball coach, the school announced in a news release late Wednesday night. "This situation has been difficult for all concerned, and our prayers continue to remain with everyone," the school said in the release.  Last month, Smith was arrested in the Bay Area. San Diego (KGTV)- Another section of the bluff has collapsed in Encinitas. This comes almost exactly one year after the deadly collapse that killed three women on the beach.Large mounds of rock sit at the foot of the cliffs on Stonesteps Beach, in Encinitas, after the bluffs gave way early Sunday morning. Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles tells ABC 10News the collapse stretches 40 feet along the beach.The block failure sits just over a mile and a half from Grandview Beach in Encinitas. Julie Davis, her daughter Annie Clave and sister Elizabeth Charles were tragically killed at the site a year ago after the bluffs came crashing down.10News spoke with Davis' husband, Dr. Pat Davis, last week on the anniversary of the collapse. He says more needs to be done to keep Encinitas beach-goers safe."There's very few new signs warning people about these cliffs," says Davis. "There's very little coordination by the lifeguard service to warn people about how dangerous these cliffs are."Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles says no one was hurt in this weekend's collapse. The block failure was caused by natural erosion.Giles says there is a small area on the cliff that is still causing some concern. Lifeguards and the City of Encinitas are monitoring the area.Dr. Pat Davis says that as his family mourns the loss of their loved ones, he can't help but think about beach-goers."I think we're looking at a situation where what happened to my family could easily happen again."Davis has been working with local and state leaders to stabilize the bluffs. He hopes a new bill will help. It offers solutions like sand replenishment. That bill is currently moving through the state Senate. 1685

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With Thanksgiving just days away, local health officials are seeing long lines at San Diego County COVID-19 test sites with many San Diegans hoping to get tested before the holiday.With the sudden surge of testing, some experts, such as UC San Diego Chief of Infectious Diseases Dr. Davey Smith, warn that getting a test is not enough to minimize the risk of spreading the coronavirus.“There’s a worrisome reason that people are planning to go visit their older relatives and they think they’re going to be 100 percent safe,” Smith said.Smith also said getting a test now could still give out a false negative result.“If I get tested now, it doesn't mean that I'm not infected, it just means that I'm not actively shedding the virus,” Smith told ABC 10News.On Monday, at San Diego International Airport, ABC 10News spoke to travelers who had the same thought.“I got tested about a week ago, just to make sure that everything is OK. And I know you can have it without having symptoms, so I did as much as I could to prepare before I came,” said Dana McLin.And along with getting a test, these travelers made sure they brought everything else they need to stay health while traveling this Thanksgiving holiday.Jan McLin said, “We are wearing our masks and we use hand sanitizers, sanitizing wipes, washing out hands constantly. It wasn’t nearly as crowded, and there were only three people on the clock - about half the normal level. She's instead spending most of her time trying to get through to the Employment Development Department, and figure out why weeks of her jobless benefits are still unpaid. “I would wait for hours on hold if it meant talking to somebody, but they just say ‘Oh, we can't take your call at this time,” Climenson said. Climenson's one of more than 200,000 San Diego County workers who lost their jobs in March and April amid the coronavirus pandemic - a number that many economists expected to grow in May. “Here in San Diego a bigger portion of our economy is in food and drinking establishment employment, and so what we would see then is a big rebound in that area as well locally,” said Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego. The hiring - already picking up locally. Andrew Feghali just opened Dave’s Hot Chicken in Pacific Beach. He’s hosting a job fair Monday with at least 10 openings. “We start above minimum wage, so we want to make sure we get the best and the brightest, and another perk is that you get free food,” Feghali said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man suspected in an attack at a Rolando 7-Eleven that left a father of four on life support pleaded not guilty to one charge of assault with a deadly weapon Friday.The assault charge includes a special allegation for great bodily injury on the victim.John Cowan Patch, 26, is accused of striking 30-year-old George Almestar in the head with a wrench during an argument early Tuesday morning.
