CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said. The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. "We are keeping solidarity and trying to play a constructive role," he added.Su said some country's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol is no good news to the developing countries, and has exerted negative influence on the conference.Negotiators at the Cancun conference are trying to establish a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges rich nations except the United States to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012."At the end of the first week of the Cancun conference, there are some progresses in adaptation, finance, technology and mitigation for the developing countries, but it is hard to say if the progresses are final ones," Su observed. As for the rumors about a secret Mexican text, Su said that the president of COP16 has told the delegations from every country including China that Mexico will not put forward a secret text."As I know, Mexico, the host country of COP16, is always pursuing the principles of 'open, transparent and widening participation' for the climate negotiations this year. I believe Mexico will continue to keep the principles to try to get the results of balance at the Cancun Conference," he said.Su noted that the ministers will arrive in Cancun in the second week of the conference. He hopes the ministers can play an active role in promoting the progress of the conference.A 70-strong-member delegation of the Chinese government, headed by Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, is cooperating with other parties to seek a solution to global warming in Cancun. The Cancun talks, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, are aimed at finding solutions to global climate change. It has attracted about 25,000 participants from governments, businesses, nongovernmental organizations and research institutions in nearly 200 countries.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said. The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. The EU-China Year of Youth was jointly initiated by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso at the 12th EU-China summit held in 2009."The Year will provide an interactive platform for European and Chinese young people to enhance mutual understanding and friendship through creativity, tolerance and openness. We hope they can open a new page of people-to-people contacts between Europe and China," said Wang Xiao, President of the All-China Youth Federation.Wang led a delegation of 100 Chinese young people who arrived in Brussels earlier this week to meet with their 100 European counterparts for the first time. The 200 young representatives from the EU and China also exchanged ideas on a variety of issues including volunteering, mobility, culture and creativity prior to the opening ceremony. Those from China will also visit the European Parliament, the College of Europe and EU's Court of Justice later this week. The yearlong program, co-hosted by the European Commission and the All-China Youth Federation, aims to promote intercultural dialogue and strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between European and Chinese youth, as well as encourage young people to care about and support the development of EU-China relations. The EU-China Year of Youth also coincides with the European Year of Volunteering and the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteering, thus voluntary activities involving young Europeans and Chinese will be encouraged throughout the Year. With Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang wrapping up his three- nation Europe tour on Wednesday, the Sino-EU relation has had a good start this year in terms of political mutual trust and economic cooperation, while the kick-off of the EU-China Year of Youth is expected to break new ground in all-round exchanges among young people."The EU and China are now more than just trading partners, but also strategic partners. We should work together for a future of prosperity," said Ambassador Song Zhe, Head of the Mission of China to the European Union.

NANJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A court in east China's Jiangsu Province sentenced a man to death and another to life in prison Friday for illegally raising up to 4 billion yuan (606 million U.S. dollars) in a fraudulent investment scheme.Another 11 suspects were given jail terms ranging from two-and-a-half to 10 years for collusion in the fraud, which caused losses of 650 million yuan (98 million dollars) to 14,822 investors, the Intermediate People's Court in the provincial capital, Nanjing, said in a statement.According to the statement, Sun Haiyu and Hu Zhen jointly set up a company, Nanjing Runzai Biology Co., Ltd. in January 2004 and began soliciting investments from the public in the name of planting glossy ganoderma, or reishi mushrooms, which are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The judge said the company exaggerated its profits in planting glossy ganoderma and fraudulently claimed that the investment was risk free. The duo, together with 11 accomplices, raised more than 4 billion yuan from April 2004 to July 2008.Sun was sentenced to death for the crime of illegal fund-raising by fraudulent means, while Hu was sentenced to life imprisonment.

BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) on Friday moved to overhaul the supervision over country's dairy products in a bid to ensure food safety before the major Chinese festivals.Local food and drug administrations have been ordered to increase supervision over the trade and consumption of diary products and ensure that dairy products are not mixed with non-edible substances or food additives, read a notice posted on the SFDA's website. The SFDA asked restaurants to keep dairy product suppliers' contact information as well as valid documents which could help authorities identify the quality, specifications and expiration date of dairy products.Year-end is always a peak season for the Chinese to dine out, either with families or colleagues. The Spring Festival, or the Chinese lunar new year and the most important festival for the Chinese, falls on February 3.China's dairy industry was marred by a scandal in 2008, in which at least six infants died and almost 300,000 became ill across the country after consuming dairy products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. To restore consumer confidence, the Chinese government launched a nationwide safety overhaul of dairy products in November 2008.

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of China's National Energy Administration (NEA) encouraged Chinese firms to invest in the renewable energy market of the United States to boost their competitiveness in the international market. The statement was made by Wang Jun, head of the department of new energy and renewable energy at the NEA, during the wind power section at the China-US Renewable Energy Investment Forum, also attended by officials from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Commerce."While a number of U.S. companies are establishing firms manufacturing wind turbines, bearings and current converters, thus making China an important part of their global business, the U.S. wind power market remains relatively unknown to Chinese firms," said Wang.He noted that the U.S. wind power market has great potential but is short of funding in the wake of the international financial crisis. However, there remains opportunities for many Chinese wind power enterprises with strong expertise and funding.Wang also identified the lack of knowledge about rules for operating in the U.S. market rules, regulations, policies and financing channels about renewable energy investment, as barriers for Chinese firms to enter the U.S. market.
