SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tuesday marked the the 10-year anniversary of one of the most chilling murders in the history of San Diego County.Chelsea King, 17, was raped and murdered by a registered sex offender as she was out for jog around Lake Hodges in 2010.Today, her family launched a nationwide organization called "Protect the Joy" that will work to protect children.RELATED: A decade later, remembering Chelsea King and Amber DuboisLife changed for Brent King and his wife Kelly a decade ago. Their only daughter was missing out for a run then, nowhere to be found."You can't breathe. Your whole body is shaking, your chest is as tight as it's ever been," Brent King said. "You can't be in enough places at once. Every horrible thought is running through your mind as to whats happening … you know ... Where's my little girl?"After five excruciating days came the most brutal news of all. Chelsea's body was found buried in brush along the banks of Lake Hodges. "The hardest memory I have is the day that Sheriff Johnson pulled me aside and told me what had happened. And I then shared that with Kelly and Tyler," King said. "That was the hardest moment for me of my life. To not only to understand what had happened to my little girl, but then to have to share that with the two people that I care for the most." The community came together in sadness. Within weeks thousands gathered to finish Chelsea's run. It would become an annual event for the next eight years. The King family established the Chelsea's Light Foundation. To date, it's awarded over 0,000 in scholarships to local students. California lawmakers passed Chelsea's Law, which established stricter penalties for sex crimes against children.But the Kings aren't done. They're launching an organization called Protect the Joy to work on passing legislation to protect children across the country."[It's] really an umbrella organization that will work on passing legislation that will protect our kids from all those things out there," King added. All those things that threaten the safety of children, everything from gun violence, opioid abuse, sexual predators, and bullying. King says the new group will work with communities to pass laws to protect children. A lofty goal, he acknowledges."Well Chelsea always tells us to go big or home. And if you are going to do something than do it right. Do it all the way," King said.King says he's learned over the course of his time grieving that he can find joy in people's eyes, in being connected with others and trusting in the good of people. But as he sets out to grow the organization, he struggles to change policy will not be his only burden."The hard days for me is when I have to attend a wedding," King said. "Those things that a dad and a mom get to do with their kids that Kelly and I don't get to do." 2841

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) A local conservation group came dangerously close to running into the armed kidnappers who snatched a California tourist and her guide while on safari in Uganda. Kim Endicott and her driver were abducted at gunpoint from the Queen Elizabeth National Park across the border from Congo on April 2.They were released over the weekend. Details of the negotiated release have not been made public. Bill Toone is the director and founder of Ecolife Conservation in Escondido. He and several other members were leaving the park just as Endicott's group was arriving. Their guides stopped to talk. Endicott's group left and returned to their lodge. They returned to the park roughly four hours later. That's when they were ambushed. "I'm a little surprised that it ended as positively as it did. It could have obviously been really awful, and I kind of thought it might be, so it's thrilling that she's out of there," said Toone. Among other things, Ecolife Conservation provides safe, fuel efficient stoves for homes in remote areas of the world. The group has been working in Uganda for seven years. Toone said he's never felt unsafe. He was shocked to learn of the kidnappings."First of all, it's low season there and so there are very few tourists around anyway, so I guess that is why we became a target, it made it a little simpler, or she became a target," said Toone. Toone said in the days that followed the kidnapping; his group was required to have armed guards. He says the Ugandan government has been misleading on this issue."They say it's required to have armed guards when you go in the park. We've been going to the park for seven years. Every entrance to the park is through a gate where there are wildlife officials who check your vehicle in, they know who is in the vehicles, they check the licenses of the guides, never in all the years that we've gone there has anyone even suggested that you bring an armed guard. They've been saying she should have had a guard, that is not our experience at all," said Toone. Toone hopes things return to normal soon."The repercussions could be enormous. Uganda depends very heavily on tourism dollars. That's their incentive to do the kind of conservation they do there for the wildlife," said Toone who reiterated that the kidnappings are an isolated event."We have to keep it in perspective that this was one person in a country that actually has a really wonderful record for safety. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were arrested on suspicion of vandalizing a school in the College East area late Thursday night.At around 11 p.m., San Diego police were called to Harriet Tubman School on 6880 Mohawk St. in response to two people seen on the campus.When officers arrived, the two people ran away. Following a brief foot chase, police caught the pair and took them into custody.Police said officers discovered a classroom with a window that was smashed, a vandalized TV screen inside a room and graffiti.Officers also found fireworks they believe the two people planned to set off. 603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside.They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized.The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check.In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier.It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857
