SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A sea lion pup in Encinitas was saved Tuesday from a diver's mask that was tightly wrapped around its neck.The year-old sea lion pup was found at Swami's Beach with a diver's mask wrapped around its neck. The sea lion, which only weighed about 32 pounds, appeared malnourished and dehydrated, according to SeaWorld rescue team members.The mask had been wrapped around the sea lion's neck for weeks, preventing the pup from foraging and eating.RELATED: Sea lion lies down in front of San Diego hotel's sign, refuses to budgeHad the mask remained on the pup, the animal would likely have eventually starved to death or been strangled by the mask, crews said.Rescue team members cut the mask off the sea lion, but found that a wound caused by the mask had become infected. Crews took the pup to SeaWorld’s Animal Health and Rescue Center, where officials treated the sea lion's wound.Officials say other than the wound and undernourishment, the sea lion was in good health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A thief with a U-Haul truck and young accomplice made off with a haul at a home in Rancho San Diego.Sue Sobke and her husband returned to their home on Calle Deposito Saturday night and found their patio sliding door shattered. "Just a violation. A lot of fear and panic," said Sobke.Inside, two rooms were ransacked. The jewelry box in her bedroom was emptied of hundreds of pieces. Many of the piece were sentimental, one in particular. Her father, a World War II veteran, bought her mother a gold ring while in China after the war. Both of her parents have passed. "Felt close to her ... means my mom and how much I loved her. How much my dad loved her ... now it's gone," said Sobke.Her mission to get it back could depend on a piece of surveillance video. The video shows a U-Haul truck making a turn near her home. Neighbors spotted it parked in front of her home. "They saw a man in my backyard, in his 40s, fit and wearing a hat," said Sobke.Sitting in the truck was a boy about 12 years old."A neighbor saw the boy in the truck listening to music. He waved at him and drove off," said Sobke.Whether the boy was used as a lookout or diversion, Sobke can only shake her head."It's clever. I'll admit that. No one would suspect a young boy waiting for his father. It's horrible, training him," said Sobke.The training may not be over. Detectives told Sobke that a U-Haul truck has been seen near other break-ins in the area. "For about three weeks, they've been chasing this U-Haul truck," said Sobke.A sheriff's department spokesperson says the burglary has not yet been linked to any other cases. 1631

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An explosion of COVID-19 cases across California has many businesses once again changing how they operate.But not by choice. The changes come after most counties find themselves in the state's most restrictive purple tier.San Diego County's move to the purple tier means back to takeout and outdoor only dining."I see red … Not in the black right now," says Terryl Gavre, owner of Café 222 in San Diego. "I've been here 29 years, this restaurant opened in 1992 … and I am doing less in sales than I was doing in 1992."Gavre's other spot, Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant, is in what she describes as a hibernation period. Hunkering down and trying not to lose money.Those business decisions come with a cost."If we stay open, every month you watch the savings account go down, down, down," Gavre said. "We had 15 employees here pre-COVID we're now down to 5. So 10 of my staff members have been laid off. At Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant, we had 40 people on staff."This week, 28 other California counties across the states moved back into the purple tier."My first thought was that's very frustrating. My second thought was immediately what I've been doing for the last eight months which is lying in bed awake thinking how are we going to pull this off," said Ryan Joiner, who owns Athlon Fitness & Performance in San Luis Obispo.The rules say fitness facilities located in purple tier counties can only operate outdoors.While some businesses have spent the last nine months treading water, the most recent frustration comes with the governor's Monday press conference and changes to the tier system, allowing counties to move back a tier after one week, not two.It drastically changed the makeup of the state and how many businesses across the state can operate."Counties can move back after one week, not just two weeks," Gov. Gavin Newsom said, describing the state hitting the emergency brake. "I'll go back so you can get a sense of where we were just a week ago and now again the purple throughout the state of California.""It's really frustrating for a lot of people and ya it does seem like he's moving toward a backdoor shut down order again," James Gallagher is a state assembly member in Northern California.Gallagher says the governor keeps changing the rules just as people are finding their footing from the last set of guidelines."I just think that this approach is the wrong one," Gallagher said.Gavre says the tighter the restrictions get and the longer they go on the harder for small businesses to keep going."A lot of people out of work right now going into the holidays and I don't know what they are going to do," Gavre said.The state has said the spread of COVID-19, if left unchecked, could quickly overwhelm our health care system and lead to catastrophic outcomes. 2824

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A staph infection led to the amputation of a 3-year-old boy's legs weeks after his family arrived in San Diego for a vacation.The Baumkirschners and some friends arrived in their RVs from Arizona in early October and immediately set up camp along Mission Bay.3-year-old Beauden and his two older sisters were part of a group that went for a ride on their bikes."He fell off his bike and scratched his knee. We put on antibacterial spray with a band-aid, and off we went," said his father Brian Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says Beauden spent the next few hours riding bikes, running around, and at one point, playing in the dirt. Early in the evening, Beauden told him he wasn't feeling well."He said, 'My tummy hurts. Is it bedtime?'" said Baumkirschner.The next morning, Beauden woke up with a fever and eventually started favoring his right leg, where he had a scrape just under his knee. When he became lethargic the next day, his parents rushed him to urgent care, and then Rady Children's Hospital. Brian says his son's right knee was swelling up and turned purple."It started spreading up, his legs, down his leg, in his arms, and down to this hands," said Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says doctors eventually diagnosed Beauden with a MSSA staph infection. Another type of staph infection, MRSA, is more associated with bacteria in the bloodstream."They kept telling us that there was swelling. All of his extremities are shutting down," said Baumkirschner.Beauden had developed a complication: toxic shock syndrome. His little body started to shut down. Beauden developed sepsis. His kidneys started to fail."It's been every parent’s worst nightmare. You can’t do anything. You’re helpless," said Baumkirschner.There were several leg surgeries to relieve the pressure. Baumkirschner says there were some harrowing days, but his son pulled through. On Monday, doctors had to amputate his legs below the knee.Baumkirschner says he's just grateful is son is alive. He's optimistic Beauden's arms and hands can be saved.Baumkirschner says doctors at Rady Children's Hospital told him similar serious staph infections are rare, and they only a see a few cases every year.Doctors also couldn't pinpoint exactly when or where Beauden contracted the staph bacteria.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family with expenses. 2365
