SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parts of Balboa Park reopened Friday after the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures in March.Park officials said the following areas would reopen: Central Mesa (El Prado, Plaza de Panama, Cabrillo Bridge, Pan American Plaza), all parking lots, Prado Restaurant, Tea Pavilion, and Visitors Center.Tim Lu and his daughter Matilda have been looking forward to a bike ride at the park for a long time.They live nearby and drove by regularly ever since the park closed. Week after week, all they saw were empty streets and sidewalks.When they got the news that parts of Balboa Park were going to reopen, Lu wanted to make sure they were there for the first day. This is a neighborhood park. It’s also a global destination but our friends have been missing this for a long time now.”While at the park or the trails, San Diego County and city health orders are still in effect. They have signs posted around the property to remind you. So even though things are opening up we want to keep our progress going and keep things open and not have to shut down again,” said Lu.As for museums, they will reopen on their own schedules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach residents were seen running for their lives as a pickup truck slammed into several parked vehicles early Thursday.Witness video captured the incident, showing a pickup truck revving its engine, screeching its tires, and slamming into vehicles. Witnesses said at least nine vehicles were damaged. Another video showed neighbors holding the driver down on the ground until police arrived, one neighbor holding the man down in a headlock. Someone nearby could be heard yelling, "don't hurt him," at the group.Police arrive to detain the driver, but it's not clear what led to the dangerous incident.One neighbor who helped hold down the driver said his first reaction was to prevent anyone for getting hurt."My first reaction he needed to get out of the car and restrain him so he didn't hit anyone else," said James Scherr.The driver was taken to a nearby hospital by police for minor injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- No citations were issued at City of San Diego beaches for violation of county and state health orders over Memorial Day weekend as San Diagans headed to the beach during the holiday, according to San Diego Police. Police say they contacted thousand of people on the sand to educate them about proper use of the beaches, but no citations were issued for violation of the county and state order. "We encounter very good crowds and received little to no opposition and gained compliance," a spokesperson for the department said. Although no citations were issued for violating state and county orders at city beaches, other citations were handed out for alcohol in public, public urination, and dogs on the beach. 738

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New moms in San Diego got a surprise Sunday morning, fresh cut roses. According to Sharp Grossmont Hospital, the flowers were cut fresh from the hospital’s gardens and delivered to the 24 women who became mothers Sunday. The program, called “This Bud’s for You” is now in its 11th year. According to the hospital, the program was initiated by landscapers to cheer patients up.
