SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An ex-con who kidnapped a coach and a 16-year-old baseball player from a field in Kearny Mesa at gunpoint and made the man drive him to Ramona, where he carjacked a 79-year-old woman to make his getaway, was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus two other life terms.Ira Stringer, 48, was convicted last month of 13 felony charges, including kidnapping during a carjacking, kidnapping for extortion and assault with a firearm.Stringer has a long criminal history, including a 1997 conviction for a home-invasion armed robbery in Spring Valley in which he held a family overnight and threatened to kill them."You are the poster child for the three-strikes law," Judge Frederick Maguire told the defendant. "You've demonstrated that you're a danger to the community."Stringer was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery in Orange County when he was charged last year with abducting 27-year-old Dylan Graham and 16-year-old Jack Spencer from Hickman Field in Kearny Mesa, where Graham was giving the teenager a batting lesson on Dec. 23, 2015.Deputy District Attorney James Koerber said Stringer approached the victims holding a loaded .357 Magnum and demanded that he be driven to Ramona.Stringer told Graham that he had been in a gunfight and needed to get "far away," according to the prosecutor.During the 40-minute drive to Ramona, Stringer held the gun to Graham's head.Graham said he decided to do something, letting go of the steering wheel and jumping in the back seat in an attempt to get the gun away from Stringer.Graham said Stringer fired three shots, all barely missing him. The victim's car crashed, and was a total loss.Outside the car, Stringer acted like he was hurt and flagged down and carjacked 79-year-old Barbara Roulier and stole her car.Roulier, now 81, told Stringer she has forgiven him for what he did to her that day.Stringer robbed a convenience store in San Diego three days after the kidnapping and carjacking and a few hours after that, robbed a store in Orange County with a shotgun. 2083
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homeless hospital patients in San Diego are sometimes dumped back on the streets after receiving treatment. Some of them - then turned away from shelters who don't have enough room. California lawmakers are trying to change that.It breaks Kim Peterson's heart to see her friend, Heather, living on this Chula Vista sidewalk."This is a picture of us together," said Peterson. "We've become more like sisters."Heather is constantly in and out of hospitals."She's had multiple strokes," Peterson said. "She needs to use a wheelchair to get around."But, the care stops once the hospitals let her go."She was released back to the street with a bus pass," Peterson told 10News. "It was raining, with no place to go, just a blanket."Another time, Heather was taken to a shelter - but turned away. "They dropped her off far from where she felt safe," Peterson said. "They took her downtown where there wasn't a bed for her."One hospital told 10News they give patients a list of resources, but the patient has to coordinate them on their own. Senate Bill 1152 would require hospitals to confirm the shelters have room before they're discharged."What does she need to do?" said Peterson. "I will help her do whatever she needs to do to get housed, to be safe, instead, she's laying on the sidewalk."The current problem leaves the homeless in their most vulnerable state and back on the streets. "It's very discouraging to think that we can't do better than that," Peterson said. Today, Heather got news that a nursing facility has extra room. "She will never get better," Peterson said. "She's gonna be in this permanent state of disability."Heather will be celebrating her 60th birthday next month, with a roof over her head. Many others won't be as lucky. A company, that according to its website, ‘Cleans beyond what the eye can see.’ And in the age of COVID, business is good.“I’ve actually been able to bring people who needed work a source of income and employment,” says Jackson.For an essential business like Truvian Sciences, a COVID outbreak and loss of employees would be a devastating blow to its progress.“People touch stuff all day long. I’m a TSA guy,” says Jackson wiping down cabinet handles.T-S-A is Jackson’s term for Touch Sensitive Areas. He knows where bacteria live and how to kill it. But how he learned these skills is a complicated journey.“It was like graduating from the school of hard knocks, literally,” says Jackson remembering.That school was at the California City Correctional Facility.“I was incarcerated on weapons charges,” says Jackson.Jackson joined an Oceanside gang when he was just 14 and was in prison by the age of 24. After years in and out, he chose a different path that would offer a new life. He joined a prison work program that taught him how to clean and disinfect hospitals with the highest standards.“Everything I know about cleaning, that’s going to be my ticket when I get home,” added Jackson thinking back to his final months in prison.And that’s when Jackson was introduced to Defy Ventures. Think Shark Tank for prisoners. He spent five months in an entrepreneurial training program, culminating in a pitch competition judged by Venture Capitalists and CEOs.Mark Bowles, a San Diego biotech and technology entrepreneur, was there to hear Jackson’s pitch.“To really make a difference, you have to do more than just put a sign in your yard or post memes. I think you have to actually go do something, and this program does make a big difference,” said Bowles. “You’re not with him very long before you realize this guy is shot out of a cannon.”After several pitch rounds, Jackson ended up placing second.And by coincidence, that very night, he was released from prison. Bowles and his team invested in Jackson’s startup. And when COVID hit, he was hired fulltime by Truvian.“He’s a full capitalist now,” adds Bowles with a smile. “He’s got stock options, and he’s working in a high-tech company.”To understand what a life-transformation this is for Jackson, you must first know the recidivism rate for prisoners after three to five years of release, according to the DOJ, is roughly 70%. Timothy has been out of prison for 3 ? years and continues to rebuild his life.“For somebody to be able to do that, it just spoke volumes to me,” says Lt. Taurino Valdovinos.No one is happier for Timothy more than Lt. Taurino Valdovinos of the Oceanside Police Department. He was Jackson’s initial arresting officer.“My first experience with Timothy was on the night we arrested him,” adds Valdovinos.Now the two speak together, offering a way out to troubled youth in Oceanside.“It’s my favorite part of the program,” says Valdovinos. “When we let the kids know our past and that bond we have, it is incredible the look on their faces.”For Jackson, it is a surreal moment every time.“I never thought that I would be asked by law enforcement to do such a thing,” says Jackson. “You won’t catch me on the other side of that recidivism number.” 3680
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Veterans looking for a job during the Coronavirus Pandemic are learning to use virtual job fairs to grow their careers."It's sometimes difficult, but overall it's been a positive experience," says Army Veteran Steven Padilla, who has been looking for a job since March."You can only do so much interacting. You can't shake hands. You can't wait in line for a conversation."Padilla says his job search has been more difficult since the Pandemic hit. Companies have stopped hiring or removed job postings.He's not alone in looking for a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Veteran Unemployment skyrocketed during the Pandemic, peaking at 11.8% in April. That means more people competing for fewer positions.But RecruitMilitary.com, the Army's primary contractor for helping service members transition from the Army to civilian employment, says there are still plenty of jobs. They're hosting multiple virtual job fairs every week to help veterans find one."It's really just a way to dip your toes in the water and visiting a lot of companies," says Chris Stevens, the Vice President of RecruitMilitary.com.He says the company has gone from holding about 15 virtual job fairs each year to more than 130 planned for 2020."It's just like any other typical chat room," Stevens says. "Candidates and companies can go into private chats.
