BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 50 people have been killed and 15 are missing following floods, landslides and mud flows that hit parts of central and southern China following days of torrential rains, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Saturday.Nearly 17.2 million residents in nine provinces were affected by flood-related disasters and 597,000 people were relocated from July 1 to 12 a.m. of July 10, the ministry said in its latest disaster relief update.About 946,500 hectares of farmland were damaged, including 133,900 hectares that were completely destroyed. Further, more than 42,000 houses collapsed and another 121,000 were damaged, the ministry said, estimating that direct economic losses could reach 8.9 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. dollars).The ministry sent 6,000 tents to the hardest-hit Hubei Province in central China and Chongqing Municipality in southwest China on Saturday.In June, torrential rains had resulted in 260 deaths and left 211 missing in 11 southern provinces.The latest round of storms began to pound large swaths of central and southern China on July 8.In Hubei, the local weather forecast bureau said storms or thunder storms could hit the province again from July 11 to 13. It warned that rainfall would exceed 300 millimeters in some worst-hit areas, which was likely to trigger another round of heavy floods.The Three Gorges Dam, sitting in the middle reach of the Yangtze River in Hubei, on Saturday released water for the first time this year.Engineers opened three sluice gates to discharge some 32,000 cubic meters of water per second and another sluice gate to release floating objects.The flood from the upper stream reaching the dam was measured at 36,000 cubic meters of water per second and could increase to 39,000 cubic meters per second by Sunday, dam officials said.Authorities said water levels in many branches of the 6,397-meter-long Yangtze River that runs from west to east, had gone above the warning lines. At Wulong monitoring station in Chongqing the water level was three meters above the warning line.In southwest China's Guizhou Province, several counties and villages were submerged in more than one meter deep water. About 7,500 residents were evacuated from the flooded zones.Also, four miners were killed in a gas explosion after heavy rain cut off electricity and stopped ventilation equipment at a coal mine in Xishui County of Guizhou's Zunyi City early Saturday morning. Seven of the 25 miners who were working underground managed to escape when the explosion occurred. Rescuers later saved 14 other miners.

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- China issued an orange alert on Thursday for wave surges, the second highest level warning, forecasting that Typhoon Conson may reach land Friday on the southeast coast of China' s Hainan province.The National Marine Environment Forecast Center warned of a 6-metre wave surge in the middle and the north of the South China Sea from Thursday night through Friday.Meanwhile, warnings were also issued for a possible 5-metre wave surge off the east shore of Hainan province and a 3-metre wave surge off the west shore of Guangdong province and the southern coast of Hainan.The Center also issued a yellow-level alert for a storm surge which might affect Guangdong and Hainan province.The center suggested local governments gear up for a disaster response.Conson is currently wreaking havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 26 people and injuring 14 others as of Thursday.

SHENYANG, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China mobilized helicopters for the first time in a highway medical rescue drill in northeast China' s Liaoning Province, the provincial bureau of transport said Thursday.The rescue drill took place at 10 a.m. on the Shenyang-Dalian highway where a bridge collapse and traffic pile-up purportedly injuring dozens was simulated.Two helicopters, an S-76 from China' s Ministry of Transport and an Mi-17 from Shenyang Military Command, were dispatched to rescue those acting as wounded in the blocked section inaccessible to rescue vehicles.The rescue workers were airlifted to the crash site and successfully extricated two "trapped" bus passengers within three minutes before transporting them to nearby hospitals.More than 300 people participated in the drill organized by China' s Ministry of Transport and the provincial government of Liaoning.

  

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland on Friday agreed to start free trade agreement (FTA) talks, as the two states celebrate their 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties.Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Swiss counterpart, Doris Leuthard, witnessed the signing of the memorandum of understanding on finishing the FTA feasibility study that was started in 2009.The two states will begin FTA talks as soon as possible, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with Doris Leuthard, president of the Swiss Confederation and head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, Aug. 13, 2010.As one of the first Western countries to forge diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, Switzerland has become China's major trade partner in Europe."Facing new opportunities, China-Switzerland relations are at a new starting point," Hu told Leuthard during their 30-minute meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.President Hu hailed the development of bilateral relations and pledged to further expand political trust and trade and economic cooperation.Leuthard conveyed her nation's condolences to China over the series of natural disasters the country has suffered recently.Leuthard also said Switzerland will stick to the one-China policy.In China for a working visit, Leuthard also said the two states should boost cooperation in finance, education, culture, environmental protection, tourism and on international affairs.

  

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars). A total of 93,000 houses and 252,800 hectares of crops have been destroyed.A bus is trapped on a flooded street in Chizhou, east China's Anhui Province, July 13, 2010.Also on Tuesday, the China Meteorological Administration forecast that rainstorms would continue to batter some flooded regions in the provinces of Guizhou, Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui and are also expected in Chongqing Municipality over the next three days.Southern Qinghai, eastern Inner Mongolia, eastern Liaoning, central Gansu and western Yunnan will also receive heavy rain during the next three days.The Ministry of Health said Tuesday that the flood-hit regions had not reported any cases of epidemics or public health emergencies.
