A New York jury granted nearly million in civil damages to a high school student who was severely burned in a 2014 class chemistry experiment. The award is the culmination of a years-long lawsuit by the family of Alonzo Yanes, who was a student at New York's Beacon High School at the time of the experiment.Yanes is still being treated for his injuries, requiring autografts to replace tissue, his lawyer said."He hasn't had a day without pain," lawyer Ben Rubinowitz said. "They are more than just scars on his face."The lawsuit accused the New York City Department of Education and the Board of Education of failing to alert teachers to the dangers of the experiment, known as the rainbow demonstration. The experiment was intended to demonstrate colors of flame produced by the combustion of various metals or salts. When Yanes attempted it in his sophomore chemistry class, it generated an explosion that caused a fire, the lawsuit states.Several months after the incident, the American Chemical Society's Committee on Chemical Safety put out a 1064

A suspect accused of fatally shooting an Illinois deputy assigned to a US Marshals task force while the deputy was trying to serve a warrant in Rockford on Thursday morning will face murder charges, authorities said.Deputy Jacob Keltner, who was with McHenry County Sheriff's Office for almost 13 years, was shot outside the suspect's room, Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea said. Keltner, who died at a hospital, had a wife and two children.McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim said Keltner was a "fine young man.""He was part of a group that chased the worst of the worst," Prim said.A 25-year-old female acquaintance of the suspect was wounded, treated and released from a hospital. She was not charged, O'Shea said. He added that no one from the task force fired a weapon during the incident. The suspect, Floyd E. Brown, was arrested after an hourslong standoff that followed a chase on an interstate through Illinois. He will face a state and a federal murder charge, officials said.Brown was staying at an extended stay motel in Rockford when police attempted to serve warrants for him. After the shooting, the suspect led police on a chase and barricaded himself in his vehicle alongside Interstate 55 in Illinois after being cornered by authorities, Illinois State Patrol Trooper Sean Ramsey said.Law enforcement officers tried for hours to get him to come out of the vehicle. Brown opened his door several times but would not get out, Ramsey said, adding that Brown stopped communicating with police. The county had multiple previous altercations with Brown while serving warrants, Ramsey said. 1608

After taking a night off to mourn teammate Tyler Skaggs, whose death remains a mystery, the Los Angeles Angels will take the field Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers. The game will begin with a moment of silence to honor Skaggs before the 7:05 p.m. (8:05 p.m ET) first pitch in Arlington, Texas, the Rangers said in a statement. The Rangers will donate the proceeds from a fan raffle to the Angels Baseball Foundation in Skaggs' honor, the team said. The first of the four-game series was postponed Monday after the 27-year-old pitcher was found dead in a Southlake, Texas, hotel. Fans who had tickets to Monday's game should hold on to them until it's rescheduled, the Rangers said.Skaggs was found unresponsive at a Hilton in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb and pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a statement.Foul play is not believed to be a factor at this point, Southlake police said in a statement. "In these early stages of the investigation, it does not appear at this time that suicide was the cause of death," Southlake police officer Brad Uptmore told CNN."Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family," the Angels tweeted. The Angels drafted Skaggs in 2009. He made his major league debut in 2012 and spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks."We are heartbroken with this tragic news," Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall said in a statement. "He will always be remembered here as a great teammate and wonderful young man."Skaggs last pitched Saturday, completing 4? innings in the Angels' game against the Oakland As in Anaheim.Skaggs was married at the end of 2018, according to his and his wife's Instagram accounts. Photos show them kissing and embracing on their wedding day.Carli Skaggs on Sunday night shared a photo of her husband wearing a cowboy hat. Tyler Skaggs later posted a picture on his 1891
