BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland held their first study meeting on the feasibility of a Free Trade Area (FTA) in Beijing on Thursday, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement on its website.The meeting will continue until Friday, the department of international trade and economic affairs of the MOC told Xinhua.According to MOC statistics, bilateral trade between China and Switzerland topped 11.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.Although the two-way trade volume dropped slightly on account of the global economic downturn in 2009, the decline rate was small.Official figures also show that Switzerland is China's ninth largest European trade partner, while China is Switzerland's fourth largest global trade partner.

HANOI, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong said here on Thursday that Vietnam vows to advance friendly ties with China.Trong made the remarks when meeting with Han Qide, vice chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee, and president of the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament.Trong said Vietnamese and Chinese high-level officials have been committed to developing bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.Bilateral relations are developing in a fine manner, with expanding economic and trade relations and active people-to-people exchanges, said Trong.Trong said Vietnam would spare no effort to advance bilateral friendly relations.Han said in the meeting that China and Vietnam have been expanding cooperation in economic and trade, culture, science, education and other fields in recent years.The two countries have seen strengthened cooperation and coordination in international and regional issues, said Han.Han said China and Vietnam have decided to develop comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, which injected new impetus to bilateral relations.Han said this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and the Year of Friendship. China would like to take this opportunity to enrich bilateral relations and push forward the bilateral ties to a new level.

CAIRO, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The commander-in-chief of Egyptian armed forces met Wednesday in Cairo with visiting Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian, pledging to strengthen bilateral military ties.Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, who is also Egyptian Minister of Defense, said during the meeting that the two countries have seen close cooperation in military, political and economic fields in recent years, which serves both countries' interests as well as regional and world peace and stability."The Egyptian military attaches great importance to the friendly relationship with the Chinese counterpart and expects more efforts to be made to further improve pragmatic cooperation," Tantawi said.For his part, Ma said the two sides enjoy long-term friendly relationship, and fruitful cooperation has been accomplished in the fields of high-level visits and professional personnel training."The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the Egyptian side to consolidate the traditional friendship and push forward the in-depth cooperation between the two militaries," Ma said.Ma arrived in Cairo on Tuesday. BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Supervision said Thursday it would enhance supervision to key sectors and leading officials this year to ensure clean and efficient work in promoting the country's sound economic and social development.The supervision and examination would target corruption in project construction, real estate development and land management, as well as corruption behind major accidents, the ministry said in a circular outlining major works in 2010.The ministry would investigate officials who meddled in construction projects against relevant regulations to seek personal gains, staff of supervisory organs who were negligent of duty or took bribes, and those who involved in serious commercial bribery cases, the circular said.The ministry vowed "zero tolerance" for these cases, it said.The ministry promised to step up its efforts this year to ensure the implementation of the central government's major arrangements for accelerating the adjustment of economic growth mode and promoting steady and fast economic development.It would also strengthen supervision and examination to make sure local governments will take measures to check the rocketing real estate price in some cities to ensure the sector's healthy development, it said."Lazy and incapable" officials would also be targeted in the supervision to ensure efficiency of government work, according to the circular.China has intensified its fight against corruption recently.In its latest effort, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Tuesday listed 52 unacceptable practices in an ethics code for CPC cadres to follow.The code forbids conducts including accepting cash or financial instruments as gifts, and using their influence to benefit their spouses or children with regards to their employment, stock trading or business.

BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The appreciation of renminbi, or China's currency yuan, will not help tackle the global economic imbalance, economists said here Saturday.The idea that yuan's appreciation would cure global economic imbalance was not going to happen, Angel Gurria, secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, said at the China Development Forum 2010.To solve trade imbalance, countries such as the United States and China should seek measures to encourage domestic consumption, improve social well-being and reform pension system, instead of sticking to the exchange rate issue, Gurria said.The exchange rate adjustment, especially between the United States and China, would not help cut the U.S. trade deficit, while one way to tackle the problem is to loose restrictions on high-technology exports to China, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said.Since China overtook Germany to become the world's largest exporter, the country is facing increasing criticism for devaluating the yuan to earn artificial price advantages. Some U.S. senators have recently ratcheted up pressure on yuan appreciation and urged the government to label China as currency manipulator."If the U.S. government names China as a currency manipulator, quite unfortunately, it will hurt the bilateral relations at least in short and medium term," said Li Daokui, director of the Center for China in the World Economy of Tsinghua University."The two countries should be cooperative to solve the problem, while naming China as a currency manipulator will be no help," Li said."After all, it will not be in the interests of the United States, China and the whole world if the two countries' disputes escalate into a trade war," he said.
