INDIANAPOLIS — The driver of a tanker truck was critically injured after his truck crashed and exploded Thursday afternoon on an interstate ramp on the east side of Indianapolis.Indianapolis Fire Department public information officer Rita Reith said the tanker was hauling 4,000 gallons of jet fuel when it overturned before 2 p.m. Thursday on the ramp leading from Interstate 465 southbound to Interstate 70 eastbound. The tanker truck driver, Jeffrey Denman, 59, of Brownsburg, suffered significant burns and was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.I-70 and I-465 were closed for hours following the crash, and the ramp will be shut down while repairs are made, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.Indiana State Police reported investigators believe unsafe speed contributed to the crash.Reith said the crash split the tank and overturned the semi, causing the fire to break out. She said witnesses reported Denman left the truck on his own and was alert and oriented, but his clothes were on fire. 1049

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Doctors across the country are working to figure out a medical mystery that's left a Smithville, Missouri, teenager losing her senses, including her vision. Jordyn Walker is 15 years old and now permanently blind, part of a medical mystery she's been battling for more than a year and a half. "I just hope it never happens again," she said. "I don't really know what else I can lose." Walker's symptoms first appeared in July 2017. At first, the teen experienced stomach pains associated with her colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. Then her face began to swell and her eyes, ears and nose began to bleed. Walker lost her sense of taste and smell. "It was terrifying knowing that there is nothing I could do for her and just watching her go through this," said her mom, Kendyll Walker. Tests results in 2017 from an out-of-state hospital came back normal so Walker's family believed it was a one-time thing. A year later, she went to the emergency room at The University of Kansas Hospital. Her severe symptoms had returned and were much worse. "How rapid her face started swelling and how rapid the pressure in her eyes went up were quite alarming," said Dr. Travis Langner, who is the division chief for the hospital's pediatric critical care unit. Walker stayed in the pediatric critical care unit and underwent emergency eye surgery. The pressure on her eyes was too severe and caused her to lose her sight permanently. "It's frustrating for the family, it's frustrating for us not to have pinpointed the answer and have a definite diagnosis," Langner said. "But we've gotten enough answers from the tests, enough negative answers, to know what it's not. So now it's finding the definitive answer of what it is." Walker is going to Minnesota to undergo more tests. Her family has set up a 1835

Large parts of the US may experience record low temperatures as an Arctic blast sweeps across the Midwest and Northeast through the middle of next week.Nearly two-thirds of the country will be vulnerable to unseasonably cold temperatures."We are in a pattern where multiple waves of cold are moving in from Canada and impacting the Central and Eastern US," CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said Thursday."One wave of cold came in late last week, another is moving in today and tomorrow, and the coldest blast by far moves in early next week."For much of the country east of the Rocky Mountains, the cold wave could mean temperatures 20-30 degrees below average.Cold-weather records could be brokenStarting Tuesday morning, record low temperatures are possible across Texas and Oklahoma, along with parts of the Ohio Valley.By Wednesday, there could be more than a dozen record lows in the Deep South and the Gulf Coast, Ward said.In parts of Mississippi and Alabama, highs aren't likely to rise out of the 30s Wednesday. In a feat of engineering, human will and blatant disregard of speed limits, three men claim that they broke the record for the "Cannonball Run," a cross-country drive from New York to Los Angeles.Arne Toman, Douglas Tabbutt and Berkeley Chadwick say they started their drive on November 11 at 12:57 a.m. at the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan and ended at the Portofino hotel in Redondo Beach in 27 hours and 25 minutes, beating the previous record of 28 hours and 50 minutes."Holding the 'Cannonball' record is a lifelong dream of mine," Toman, one of the drivers, told CNN. "I have no intentions of trying to do it again. We had perfect weather, traffic, no construction, etc. I don't think you could recreate that or the good luck we had without having police interactions."Road & Track first reported the accomplishment in the unofficial and illicit event. The trio claims their average speed was 103 miles per hour, and the highest was 193.They drove in a "heavily prepared" Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Upgrades to the exhaust and the engine's two turbochargers produced more than 800 horsepower, a press release said.It took "every navigational aid and police counter-measure known to man" and almost 20 different scouts to avoid police interference, they said. Technology included Waze, radar detectors, a CB radio, binoculars and an airplane detection system. They had no interactions with police during the drive, Toman said.Ed Bolian, who was 1460
